Japanese rail pass - is it worth the cost?

Hi, we are travelling to Japan this April for 3 weeks and plan to spend 1 week in Tokyo then travel to Kyoto (where we are staying just outside the city and would need to get a train in each day), then on to Osaka before travelling back to Tokyo to fly home. We plan to travel between each destination by train.

The bullet train rain pass seems very expensive and we wondered would this be worth the cost and would we we better advised to buy each ticket individually? Is there a rail pass that would cover both the main line trains and the public transport within the cities?

Hi, this is the link to a Japan Rail Pass calculator that was provided on the Japan TA a Forum https://www.japan-guide.com/railpass/

If you go to that forum and provide your exact itinerary, a number of knowledgeable posters will give you good advice....it is a common question there that is regularly answered when specifics are given. :))
