Polychronis has been consistently one of our favourites tavernas on our regular trips to Kalamata, and we've eaten in many of them. The food is good basic well cooked traditional Greek cuisine from locally sourced ingredients, including olive oil from the families' trees. The portions...are large and the prices very reasonable, probably because the taverna is slightly away from the seafront. Katerina the owner is always helpful and pleasant as are all the staff. It is very popular with the locals, particularly the busy take-away service. In the winter it is warm and cosy with fava often simmering on the wood-fired stove. Poly kala.More

I wanted to give it a try after reading the reviews. It’s a small place where you can buy food for take out. Good menu with fresh daily made recipes. Homemade, tasty, greek cooking. I ate a juicy roasted pork with very good potatoes and...a stuffed tomato (rice). Honest prices, the ladies working there are nice and very busy! If you’re on a diet, don’t go🙂 they don’t go light with the seasoning!More

Delicious food in a small, cozy taverna! Greek salad, rooster with pasta, lamb fricassee and chicken roll could not be made better than here and only with fresh ingredients! Definitely a must go here in Kalamata!

My partner and I visted the restaurant twice during our stay in Kalamata. Place was always busy with both sit down customers and takeaways. Family run and staff were very helpful on both visits. Both times they brought the greek menu to your table, and...then read out what was available. Portions were good and food piping hot. Lovely fresh Greek salad and prices were amazing value. A must if you are in the area, but go early to have more menu choices to choose from.More

I stopped by this spot, on my way back from roaming the city center. I wasn’t exactly sure how things worked, because when I walked in, everyone was ordering at the kitchen window. But a very nice woman directed me to a table and read...me the menu in English. I decided on the crispy pork, Greek salad, and some wine. Ohhh the wine! When I ordered, she asked if I wanted “half or quarter”. I assumed she was referring to glass size, so I ordered “half”. When the wine came out, I knew I’d messed up...I’m pretty sure it was a half BOTTLE lol. I drank it like a champ...but I’ll know for next time that a quarter would be more than enough for one person. Back to the food...It was incredible! Those potatoes were perfectly seasoned. And the crisp on that pork was something out of a dream. Throughout my meal, there was a steady flow of folks coming in to order. And it looked like they have a delivery service, as I saw one or more guys coming in and out with food and riding away on bikes. It was an overall great experience. I have a few more days in Kalamata, so I’m sure I’ll stop back in to try another dish.More

We came across this lovely family run restaurant when walking to the beach from our hotel in downtown. There doesn't seem to have a set menu as the lady told us what was available. I ordered oven cooked chicken with lemon potatoes, Greek salad and...my partner a beef kokinisto with rice. All dishes were superb and delicious. The Greek salad was super fresh. We indeed ate like locals and the price was fantastic. A truly recommend!More

When you see it from the outside it really looks like an old time Greek taverna but don't be fooled! The service is horrible it's like they don't really want you there! But if the food was any good we would by pass the service,...however it is as bad! The salad had a long hair inside! Hopefully it was from the head!! All the foods were swimming inside excessive amounts of oil and were miserable! Very bad quality. The only positive thing is that prices are low but it's better to get a sandwich!More

Having read the reviews before my recent trip to Kalamata, I was looking forward to spending some time at this taverna. Previous words and sentences were ticking all the right boxes. Authentic, Traditional, Mix with the locals, Speak some Greek to be understood, Quite back...street etc etc. It sounded like just my sort of place but unfortunately it was a bit disappointing. For most of the time I was the only one in there so the atmosphere was not good. The food was fine but by the time I was half way through it was close to cold. When I went to leave I made a point of going to the counter to say goodbye to the owner who was in the kitchen to let her know I was leaving so she could go to the table to collect the money I had left (including a decent tip). So you can imagine I was a little bit annoyed when I got outside, she came running after me to say that I had not paid! I told her it was on the table but she disputed this. We went back inside and I waited while she looked again and found it. She apologised but it just about summed the night up. Maybe my expectations were to high and I am sure on another night things could of been so much better but I did not return to find out.More

Great little find - out of the way, patronized by locals, food as fresh as you can get - the pancetta pork was divine, the beef cooked to perfection. No menu, the proprietress just tells you what's available today. Feeling like a real local now.

This friendly little taverna located up a side street near the port is worth a visit at any time of the year, and one of best places in Kalamata for authentic Greek food. The portions are very generous and the prices reasonable, probably because it's...slightly back from Navarinou the main seaside street. The menu changes daily so there's always something new and tasty to try, and we've had dishes here that we have never encountered before despite many years traveling in Greece. There is normally a wide range of food for both vegetarians and meat eaters, but be aware that as everything is prepared fresh each day the choices narrow as the hour gets later, although the usual grills and salads, etc are always available. Also be aware that the oven baked dishes on the menu ( lathera ) feature generous amounts of olive oil from the family farm so if that's not to your taste it's may be best not to choose those particular dishes, but it's still worth a visit. A little Greek can be helpful at times but it's not vital. They're open for both lunches and evening meals, except Sunday evening, and also do a takeaway if required, If you go once you'll go back.More

It's well worth seeking out this unpretentious little taverna, tucked away down a side street. The food is both delicious and excellent value, and the atmosphere is delightful. Katerina has conjured up a magical spot for outdoor eating in summer, it's really cosy in winter,...and most of the diners are regular locals rather than tourists. Katerina speaks reasonable English, and her menu regularly changes according to available ingredients. We are vegetarians, which can sometimes limit our options, but here we are often spoiled for choice. Meat-eating friends are also highly enthusiastic.More
