Margaret's Cafe is well known and highly visited in central Macao. Customers mainly buy therein the famous Portuguese egg tarts, nowadays a worldwide delicacy. However, the fame of the place has not any precious gusto: egg tarts are only average and become almost rubber when...one tries to eat them one day after buying them. They are not as good as in Lord Stow's Bakery in Coloane, Macau, and are quite distant from the original tart. Moreover, the place is narrow, crowded, and far from spotless. The staff doesn't care about customers other than receiving their money. Except for Portuguese egg tarts, other cakes and biscuits are trivial. It is a place not recommended at all.More
Margaret's e Nata is one of the two famous makers of Portuguese-style egg tarts here in Macau. I prefer the other, Lord Stow's, but Margaret's is a pretty close second. They are located at R. do Cmte. Mata e Oliveira and are open from 8:30am...to 4.30pm (M,T,TH & F) and 10am to 6pm (ST & SN) or until tarts are sold out each day. They are closed on Wednesdays. Note: Margaret's tends to be closed on all major holidays and they take extended breaks during Chinese New Year, Mid-Autumn Festival and Chinese Golden Weeks, sometimes being closed for a week at a time. Note: Margaret's is incredibly popular with tourists these days. As such, you may very well find a ridiculously long queue in order to simply get into their shop to buy a tart or two. There are seats outside but they are usually fully taken. Do be ready to take your tarts to go and eat them somewhere else if you can't find space to sit down. I visited Margaret's recently and found no queue at opening time, much to do with the Coronavirus outbreak which has pretty much all tourists out of Macau at the moment. Tarts are now MOP10 each. They are served piping hot and they don't offer napkins so best to have some tissue with you as the tarts are a bit oily. The tarts are eggy, sweet and the crust is usually quite crispy. They sell a few other bakery related food products and coffee as well. Note: For an interesting bit of history, Margaret was married to the late Andrew Stow, the original founder of Lord Stow's. Sort of explains why the two businesses have the two best tarts in town.More
Don't think it is worth queuing for if the line is crazy long. We went back there on a Monday morning, around 10am, and there wasn't much of a line. Egg tarts were less flakey. I personally preferred the lord stow's recipe.
1st day when after 1700lt, it’s closed. Went again for the following 2 days. Very long queue but it’s moving fast. Worth the wait. Please note no photography in the store can try the pork bun (Tai Lei) 2 stores away it’s good too.
Margaret’s cafe is famous for egg tart. The tart looks yellowish and slightly burn at the base of the tart. Is not oily and texture is soft and a bit sweet. The shop is located in a lane. I was staying in Emperor hotel and...the cafe is just 6 mins away. Recommended at least onceMore
In the middle of the town. Watch out for the sign and arrow around the narrow back street. Long queue with few tables and chairs. Excellent tart with crisp golden pastries and silky smooth fillings. Not too sweet. Just right. They have coffee and sandwiches...too. But every body wants the egg tarts.More
We came right after our lunch at Chan kong Kei, just across the road,walked through the alley and you will get to spot Margaret's Cafe. Their ordering and waiting for the tarts took us around 30 mins. Tarts were hot & fresh with crispy buttery...crust ,smooth delicious eggy filling,it was really worth the wait, and we do find the tarts taste nicer when they are warm.More
There was not much crowd during the weekday we went. You wont miss this cafe if you are walking from Lisboa to Ruins Of St Paul. I would prefer the other brand in Taipa street which was much crispy on the crust and softer in...the filling.More
Delicious custardy Portuguese egg tarts with a crispy crust! The line can be long, but it’s pretty fast moving (only about 8-10 minutes). Must stop here if you’re in Macao, especially since it’s so conveniently close to Senado Square and other major cultural stops.
The queue was long but took us around 15-20 mins to buy the food. The egg tart's taste was so so not fantastic.
After having had one fresh out of the oven, it's the best! I haven't tried the famous one in Portugal so I can't compare. It's flaky, crispy exterior with custardy smooth not too sweet filling. I have tried many Chinese versions and I prefer this...one, hands down. For me it was worth looking for this not easy to find place.More
I have been here a few times and my experience with the egg tarts have varied. There is always a long line here. On the positive side that means the egg tarts will always be fresh and on the negative side you have to wait...in the blistering heat. In my opinion the egg tarts here are better than Lord Stow and the location is more convenient to access. The custard is the best part. The pastry portion would be better if crispier and more flaky. The egg tarts are priced at 10 MOP for one and 55 MOP for half a dozen.More
