We sat by the lovely real fire in the bar and had the most wonderful pizza (made in the pubs pizza oven) and a bottle of Ghost Ship and it was just so lovely to be in a really old proper English pub with locals and visitors alike. The whole village is wonderful. Go in the church next door if you visit. Thank you lovely Woolpack staff.

Went here with my family for the Pizza and Pint night (Wednesday) Wow what can I say apart from the pizzas are spot on! absolutely delicious. The landlord was very accommodating when it came to my teenager who likes very random toppings. We even managed to sit out in the pleasant courtyard garden as it was such a lovely evening. The bar staff were very friendly and we will definitely be back to this lovely country pub.

Came here looking for a bite to eat as everywhere else in Coggeshall wasn’t serving food until 6. All the staff and customers were very friendly, especially the lovely spaniel that welcomed us. They politely told us that food wasn’t available until 6 but we didn’t mind sitting in the idyllic garden with a pint. She gave us some menus and even took our order early because the chef came in early. The sea bass and burger were both exquisite and I was pleasantly surprised at the portions and even had to take some of mine home because it was too big! Will definitely be coming back again soon.

What an amazing place to stay. Arrived a little earlier than check in but no issues and shown to our amazing room (finchingfield) which was quite stunning and beautifully decorated. Staff were fantastic during our whole stay with nothing too much trouble. And just a delight. Had Sunday lunch ordered and what Dan I say it again exceeded our expectations and was fabulous. Breakfast was in a hamper firm with muesli, muffins with fruit, orange juice and milk in the little fridge. Very enjoyable and understand they do not serve a cooked brekkie due to costs. Would have loved one if the standard was as good as the roast. Big all in all a truly amazing stay and we will ge back in the summer to enjoy their fabulous garden and hospitality. A 10/10 from us both

Met friends here for a catch up a few times and have always been made to feel very welcome by staff (especially Martin and Mel) customers range from all age groups and they have always been very pleasant, yes you get a few drunk people but I expect this from a pub and it’s lovely seeing people of all ages enjoying themselves. We have had take away pizzas, chips and onion rings a few times and was not disappointed, we have also had a roast dinner which was amazing. We will definitely be back.

We've lived near the village for over 10 years and have visited here a number of times, and always felt a bit unwelcome and like if your face doesn't fit you shouldn't be there. But hey, sometimes you fancy a drink, Coggeshall isn't overrun by good places to have one, and it's on our way home from the train station. There are also constantly rumours of new management, refurbishment, overhaul of the food offerings etc, which seem to make no difference whenever we've gone. However persuaded by the most recent set of five star reviews, we decided to drop in for lunch on a Wednesday. As soon as we walked in, we realised our mistake - stared at by a small group at the bar (the only people in there) as if we'd walked into their house uninvited, no welcome from the staff, and then, despite a sign outside saying food wed-sun, when we asked if they were serving lunch were told "no we don't have a chef" without any explanation or apology. So we left and I don't think we'll be bothering again. It sounds like they have lots of very satisfied regular customers and maybe we've just always been unlucky, but we'd recommend you keep driving if you're passing.

Me and my partner stayed overnight at the Woolpack for a wedding nearby. The pub itself has a fairly typical "old man pub" vibe to it but the barmaid was extremely helpful with showing us our room, explaining how to access our rooms once the pub has closed and also trying to get us a cab from the venue. The room itself was gorgeous, clean, and spacious. Leaving a complimentary breakfast in a hamper along with a fridge full of milk/juice/yoghurt was a lovely and unexpected touch. The adjoining bathroom was also massive and beautifully decorated. I would only caution that local public transport can't really be relied upon to get anywhere from the pub. We went to a wedding that was a mere 4-minute drive away and both of us wanted to drink, but few cab companies would even consider picking us up due to Coggeshall not having its own taxi service, and those that did quoted around an hour. Our return cab to the venue ended up being ÂŁ26 on a Monday night. As such, if you can drive it's certainly recommended. Basically, a lovely place to stay but definitely plan ahead and expect a long wait for taxis due to the area.

I ordered a cheese and pickle sandwich for £8, so I expected it would be a good one. For that inflated price I hoped there would be nice thick doorstep slices, cut from a proper loaf, and nice thick slabs of cheddar in the sandwich itself. Imagine my disappointment when I discovered the sandwich was made from thin sliced bread and the filling was a stingy portion of grated cheese. It was more like one of those sad, cheap-ass buffets that Ryanair are obliged to lay on when your flight’s delayed than a decent pub lunch. An unwanted salad and a sprinkling of Doritos didn’t add much value for me. Real ale was £5 a pint and there was only one available, the mediocre London Pride. All in all, the experience was a disappointment and a rip-off to boot. I shall never return.

We visited as part of a pre wedding celebration. We pre-ordered our food and the TA reviews lifted our expectations. We had prawn and avocado and blue cheese salads at £18 & £17. The salads contained a selection of ingredients but were small in size. Whilst they tasted ok being charged these prices I expected them to be a cut above the rest. Our friends had pizzas eating only half each as they were disappointing and lacked flavour. Not a good experienced and over charged for what was mediocre salads. Just to make things worse we spoke to a regular in the garden who confirmed it was a nice pub but the food was terrible. We definitely won’t be returning.

Pizza with whitebait, pigeon or donner kebab *sic didn’t fill me with enthusiasm. Unwelcoming (seemingly if you’re not an everyday local), overpriced wines that were obviously bought from a supermarket and generally tired and dirty throughout. Such a shame as this used to be a lovely pub. I give it six months. Oh and the pizzas were dire

Excellent Pizza, Not sure what the bad reviews are about? The staff and owners have always gone the extra mile to ensure we are accommodated with Veggie Options. Dog-friendly relaxed environment and a lovely garden. Great range of beers and Gins at reasonable prices There's nothing more you want from a pub is there?

As the heading suggests the lovely room was above the disco bar and the floor vibrated from around 9 on Christmas Eve til 1.15 a. m Christmas Day. The music had started a little quieter as we had popped down for a drink and dance but as the evening went on the music became louder such that it hurt our ears and we could no longer chat even mouth to ear! Having asked the landlord who was propping up the bar if it could be a little quieter and no joy there we decided to take our guests upstairs to our room for a coffee.... Still so loud! We escaped to the church next door for Midnight Mass but on our return it was still blaring forth. Eventually got to sleep. It was such a shame the bar let down the hotel side of things as the manager of the hotel was excellent, the breakfast was good, but sadly the bar did not replenish our milk and orange juice when my husband popped down in the morning. They were too busy serving drinks in the bar to bother about guests upstairs who had paid a lot of money to stay there! We returned on Christmas Day evening around 11.30p. m to find a carton of milk and orange juice left outside our room. These were warm to the touch and may have been left there for 12 hours so we didn't use them. We left early the next day to find breakfast and a coffee elsewhere!! The worst review I have ever given.!

Quite possibly the worst Sunday roast I have ever experienced. The meat is borderline inedible. Processed slices slammed in the microwave is exactly what it is. For ÂŁ35 a head for a 3 course you expect a premium cut of beef nicely cooked to a medium. Instead you get a grey chewy piece of cardboard. Atmosphere was not what I expected. Very cold and distant feeling from others in here. Staff were pleasant but again not hugely welcoming. Pub looks amazing from the outside but in dire need of restoration on the inside. Glad I went so I can tell others to avoid and spend their hard earned money elsewhere. An extremely disappointed party after our first and most definitely last visit here.

Table had been booked a week in advance for 6. We had travelled 1.20 minutes to meet family for lunch. Pub was pretty outside but when we arrived at 12.30 it was packed with guests waiting to go to a wedding. No table available for us - manager just told us to wait around until 1pm when the customers would go. By about 1.30 we asked for a menu - it was basic, not at all like the one advertised and for which we chose this pub - no fish, no pies, just basically burgers, pizza etc. One of the ladies toilets was blocked and unusable. We asked why we hadn't had a table reserved for us and why the menu was so limited. The lady was rude, said she didn't know customers would turn up and she wasn't responsible for the website inconsistencies. No real apology, manager not friendly, needless to say we left without eating and would never go there again. A shame in such a lovely village although we had been told beforehand that the pub management had changed recently .... obviously for the worst. A bad experience.

There was a long wait for our food because a large party came in without booking and they didn’t have enough staff on to deal with it. I don’t hold this against the staff, obviously and our waitress was very nice. The food was tasty and I loved my dessert. Would definitely go again, but I recommend booking in advance.
