To my wife it looked like a hippie diner. Maybe so, or maybe just arty-school funky. But to me it had a good all-American unhealthy menu, i.e. it was great!
Strong, no frills coffee from the pot (no east coast brown water or west coast...alternative milk froths), eggs, butter, steak! What more could you want? OK, large portions. Check! Among the standard breakfast specials were 15 omelet combos ranging from $9.95 to $10.50. And yes, pancakes, burritos and lox. And-- probably for show—gluten free toast and vegan bacon, whatever that is.
Arriving early Saturday morning, we got a choice of table, Formica tops in different bright colors with three on the sidewalk. By 10:00 the place was full up, loud and crowded. Even then, our server kept close watch, the sign of a very well-run operation. I judged the other diners were all neighbors although we did see cars pulling up to park. Located on tree-lined Wickenden Street in a section of interesting, small shops and restaurants, there was plenty of other parking on side streets.
There are many places in Providence to get your frou-frou breakfast. Brickway, however, is the place to go for honest, traditional fare and friendly, attentive service.More
