Great food, excellent service and probably the best meal we have had on our NZ trip. Well worth the visit. Big thumbs up. Really enjoyed the experience

Garlic bread was good. Everything else lacked seasoning and flavour. Service was average. Really disappointed for the reviews it had received on here. Wouldn't go back

We’re staying at the Scenic Franz Josef hotel and our room overlooked the restaurant so it was an easy choice to go there for dinner. A very friendly welcome and good food - we shared arrancini to start and then had salmon and the lamb...shank, accompanied by some very good Pinot noir.More

What a great find this restaurant was. Wonderful ambience, great interior fittings that wrapped around the story of Alice May who shot her would be husband. Readers can learn the rest of the story by going to this fantastic eatery. The food was of a...high standard with plenty of choices including gluten free. The staff were efficient and polite. We ordered lamb shank, fish and chips, fettuccine and roasted pork. And all are so good. Met another couple in the restaurant and they have been back there twice which proved that this a good place to visit. The staff are so friendly and they...made you feel welcome. Thank you all for the lovely meal.More

We absolutely loved this place. The story of Alice May is really interesting and venue has lots of character consistent with the history. The service was warm and friendly and despite a fairly full restaurant we received our meals promptly. The food was simple but...delicious. We really enjoyed our meal and would recommend this restaurant if you are visiting Franz Joseph.More

My wife and I had dinner here on two consecutive nights. In the first visit, we had: - garlic bread - mains vegetarian soup (pumpkin and carrot) - mains vegan yellow curry The garlic bread was simply superb! The soup was good. The curry was...tasty and flavoursome but quite thick. The service was good too. We decided to visit the next night too, when we had: - garlic bread (as good as yesterday’s!) - sticky toffee pudding (dessert) - chocolate fudge cake (dessert) We skipped the mains but it turned out to be very satisfying meal, nevertheless. The staff on both evenings were excellent. We will be happy to have a meal here again and recommend it to anyone.More

Cozy atmosphere, decent food, good service. Garlic bread was great, and the fish and chips were also good. (Traveled Nov 2018 but didn’t realize this review was left as a draft!)

Loved the pasta dish and salmon. Both our dinners were delicious. Although the tables were spread apart, we still managed to chat to seated neighbours and make new friends. Very enjoyable evening.

This place doesn't take bookings but wasn't too busy on the day we went. Food was delicious, especially enjoyed the sea food chowder. A restaurant with character.
