We dropped by two days in a row to Alice May for dinner. The inside is well decorated with an interesting story over the walls and menus behind the name of the restaurant. The first day we booked and sat by the fireplace with a nice vibe inside. Over the two days we enjoyed the venison sausages, vegan curry with rice and chicken with brie dish. Everything was tasty and well cooked. Prices just about OK, on a bank holiday the surcharge makes it less value for money. From our visits, probably the best option for a nice dinner in Franz Josef.

I ordered the Steak Fillet. This decision was far from a mistake, and only exemplified my belief that local restaurants are superior to chain. The steak was cooked perfectly (medium rare), and served in a more than fair portion. This paired with the delicious bacon pastry made my trip all the better. The lure of Alice May Parkinson only added to the natural ambiance of the rustic restaurant, and was an interesting read while waiting for my food. The desert I ordered, a caramel sunday topped with a caramel surprise, exceeded my expectations and was the final straw in my decision to return on my next trip.

I don’t normally review an establishment straight away but ate there this evening and we were very satisfied. Although clearly very busy, we were seated very quickly. The food was tasty and well presented. My wife explained her food allergy and the waiter checked with the kitchen before serving the meal. Staff were efficient and clearly worked well as a team. Will certainly return

Exceptional food and great staff. There were four people in our party and we had three different dishes between us. The worst part was deciding what to have!! We all commented on the good menu and the quality of the food. The dishes not only tasted good, but we felt it represented good value for money. The restaurant was busy (which is always a good sign) but that didn't affect the service which was efficient and waiting time was minimal. Had a really friendly waitress that we enjoyed good banter with. Excellent dining - fully recommend this place.

I’d looked up Alice May’s website and read the history and decided it could be an interesting place to eat when staying the night in Frans Josef. We walked past earlier in the day and checked out the menu - it looked good so decided to go for dinner. Alice May’s is a lovely place to eat, with interesting decor and information regarding Alice May and what happened to her. The staff are really friendly, providing great service, and the food is excellent. My partner had the Roast Pork which came with roast vegetables which he really enjoyed and I had the Falafel and Feta Salad which was so tasty and a really good size. We’re not beer or wine drinkers so we both had a pot of English Breakfast tea which was a decent size as we got two and a half biggish cups of tea each. My partner also had the Chocolate Fudge Cake which had hot chocolate fudge sauce, raspberry couli, vanilla ice cream and freshly whipped cream (yes the real thing not cream out of a squirty can) for dessert which he said was good. It was a tough choice for him though as he was very tempted to have the Sticky Toffee Pudding. We enjoyed looking at all the bits and pieces on display and reading about Alice May. Definitely worth a visit.

A very generous serve of fish....... almost couldn’t eat it all. The salad was good, but the chips were ‘run of the mill’ so didn’t bother eating all of them. Not the cheapest meal we have ever eaten, but considering it is a tourist town, it is fine.

We stumbled across this restaurant and enjoyed some lovely house sav and the house beer and decided to stay for dinner. Delicious, buttery garlic bread to start. I had the fish and chips (perfect) and my husband was very impressed with the steak. Both meals very generous. Really nice heritage spot. Bill came to $80 for two (2 x wine, 1 x beer, 1 x garlic bread and two mains). Very impressed and will be back.

Just a quick dinner and wine for two as we were super tired after a day of adventures. I had the chicken burger which was extremely tasty and husband had a prawn pasta dish which was also very nice, generous amount of prawns. Great menu with plenty of variety and fair prices. Friendly welcome when we arrived. We took time to look around and look at the beautifully displayed artifacts and read the amazing history behind the name. Someone please make a movie about the life of Alice May! Just incredible and well done to the owner for sharing this amazing history in such a beautiful and creative way.

Great food, service and ambience. We were advised there would be a 20 minute wait and we were seated in 5 minutes - always good to under promise and over deliver. The menu was not vast, but the food was delicious and all the dishes being served looked fantastic. If we were staying longer we would definitely have returned.

Can’t stop raving about this place, it had a great atmosphere and the food was amazing. Shared the garlic bread which was the best garlic bread I have had! I had the roast pork, the pork was so tender it must’ve been slow cooked and my husband had the lamb shank which was beautiful. Both had the sticky toffee pudding, delish! Service was so good and staff very friendly.

We had the $45 set menu and the 10 year old a kids meal. All were substantial. Good value, and absolutely delicious. However, it took a long time after being seated to be seen and then the time for food to arrive was too long. It was New Year's Day and busy (which is great) so perhaps they could have had an extra staff member on? Beware the public holiday surcharge - I usually refuse to eat anywhere that has this insidious and unnecessary money-grabber but everywhere in town had it.

We noticed on our 2 week South Island trip that you tended to pay a little more in F.J. then other places whether it be accommodation a helicopter trip or a meal. I had the Venison Sausages my wife white bait starter as a main, good size portions good service, paid F.J. prices though not off the scale. Would recommend.

We arrived quite late at Alice May with 7 people in tow but the staff were great; very friendly and accommodating. The restaurant was packed - always a good sign - and we were given an outside table with heaters at each end. Atmosphere is rustic and relaxed. More importantly, the food was great! Pork roast, spare ribs, beef cheeks, chicken curry, decent kids menu. None of us were disappointed. Would definitely recommend!

We enjoyed our food and I thought the curry was a very nice and gentle interpretation. The premises are decorated around the theme of the restaurant which is interesting. The covering on the bench seat where we were was a bit tired, but the last year has not been kind to Franz so that is not really important. The staff were enthusiastic and friendly and did a good job. The wine list by the glass is not huge and is basically one supplier, but they make good for value wine which is reflected in the reasonable prices . We would certainly go again.

We went for dinner tonight, loved every thing about the restaurant. Staff were warm and friendly, my roast pork was so tender it melted in my mouth. Lovely red house wine very reasonable too. To top off this wonderful experience we listen to Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Elvis.as we ate. We also enjoyed hearing and reading the history of Alice May. Thank you
