MICHELIN Guide's Point of View

One of the last-standing, old-time Eastern European spots on the Lower East Side, Katz’s is a true NY institution. It’s crowded, crazy and packed with ...

Well, what can I say? I expected something, yet got a fatty fat meat sandwich (it was huge, these sandwiches really are), shabby interior and a talkative employee. I don’t know how this place still remains iconic in NYC. Save your money, go to some...other place. This deli is much ado about nothing, if I may.More

After 25 years of visiting NYC, I'd never been to Katz's Deli, and not sure why. Lucky I had my vax card with me because they check it at the door. If you don't have it, then no soup for you! After the outdoor line,...then the indoor line, I got shuttled to one of the many bank teller-like windows where a craftsman takes your order and makes it on the spot. If you tip him well at the start he'll likely give you a nice snack of fresh cooked meat while you wait. I went with what they suggest anyone should get on their first visit, the pastrami. I don't have the words to accurately describe how amazing it was, it was that good. Bonus, you can sit at the table from When Harry Met Sally (I'll have what she's having").More

Don’t order an omelet, not the salami omelet anyway, its not tasty and comes with a pile of fries on top - wired. Otherwise it’s a crowded and not very pleasant space and the food is rather expensive for what it is, and very mediocre....One wonders why are they so successful.More

Great Tender meats and old school dining. My family and I have been visiting this family owned business, since I was a kid. Now I share delicious memories with my children. This is one of the best spots to get tender delicious cuts of meat...with steak style French fries. The prices have went up, since I was a kid but worth it. You can request lean pieces or fatty pieces and it’s all done right in front of you.More

This traditional Jewish restaurant is a must visit. I lived close by and when I left the area, I could not leave without a pastrami sandwich. Enough to share with 2 or 3 if you are not hungry. Interior is basic with lots of history....Worth visit also when you need some food after partying in the Lower East Side.More

My wife and I have been out of Brooklyn since 1978. My wife's Mom who still lives in Brooklyn, decided to send her daughter a Get Well care package from Katz's due to a recent surgery. We received (1) each of Pastrami & Corn Beef...packaged; (3) 2-packs of round potato Knishes; (1) jar of Half Sour Pickles; (1) jar of deli mustard, and (1) jar of Matzoh Ball soup. The Pickles......4 not sour pickles in the jar. POOR. Potato Knishes......very dry Corn Beef......to me it had an after taste, almost at tad rancid and I stopped eating it. My wife thought it tasted like Corn Beef but I could see she was disappointed at $35 a pound. (2) Rye Breads that looked like white bread in texture. The Pastrami was nothing I wanted to eat as it seems that about 1/3 of the package is nothing more than fat. See photos. This is the 2nd care package my wife's Mom sent us. Go find a local deli/supermarket and you'll get better food that is not over-priced and of poor quality. I am sure my mother in--law spent more than $125 for this box.More

Katz Deli is a part of history. When I walked in, I first just walked around looking at all the pictures on the walls dating many years back with well-known celebrities and politicians. It seems like if you go to NYC, you need to eat...at Katz at least once. That aside, the place is mostly well run. You first enter and get a “ticket” and then stand in line. Once it is your turn, you order, and the person making the sandwich writes the amount on your ticket. This all goes relatively quickly. The issue is if you (or someone in your party), also wants Potato Latkes or Knishes (for example). These are then 2 different lines and so, worst case, you may end up waiting in 3 lines. In my case, the line for the Knishes was moving soo slowly, that I just gave up. The sandwiches are very good and they are huge. It looks like almost a week’s worth of meat on one sandwich! The sandwiches are very expensive, but again, what would one expect with that much meat. Most of the folks behind the counter were friendly, but one guy was not. He didn’t make the sandwich as asked, and when questioned, he said we’d need to order and pay for a second sandwich. A manager happened to be there, and I explained the situation to her, and she asked the guy, and he insisted we didn’t ask for what we had asked for. Long story short – she had him remake the sandwich properly. But it left one person in my party feeling rather bad to have been essentially called a liar.More

The food is fabulous and the service was great. It is a little overpriced but full of tourists, guess they can get away with it. Filled us all up. Couldn’t eat for a few hours afterwards. Great customer service. Would highly recommend and definitely would...visit again before we leave NYC.More
