Food was extremely mediocre and prices outrageous. We will not come back. As a family of vegetarians we received three pasta dishes, all with the same watery red extremely garlicky sauce that tasted like it came out of a jar. We paid $81!!!!!! For these...three pastas, outrageous!!!!!More

We wandered in off the street and down a short set of stairs into a small room and wondered if we'd ended up in the wrong place at first. But we quickly realized Grotto is a small but very cozy spot with exceptional food and...service. We were wowed by each item we tasted. Hands down one of the best Italian dinners we've ever had, and the staff were very personable and attentive. Oh, and try the Limoncello Martini - you'll thank us later. Highly recommend!More

Amazing beef Wellington & seafood pasta, in an intimate setting, this was a very enjoyable saturday night with great cozy ambiance and delicious food. I suggest you reserve before going as it is very small, but it is worth tryung. Maybe a bit expensive, but...the taste makes it worth it in my opinion.More

Biggest waste of money ever! The food was tasteless. I make better Italian food! No, my puppy makes better sauce! I actually want them to pay me for the lackluster food. I guess the giveaway was the walking through the kitchen to get to the...bathroom?! We should’ve gone to Giacomo’s! Dang it!More

My husband and I generally don’t complain about the food when eating out. In this case, I can’t confirm what I was served. I ordered chicken parmigiana, I received something similar to chicken found in the frozen food section of the local grocery. The chicken...was sliced diagonally which was odd, and “stuffed” with an indecent herb blend, dry and unappetizing. I tried to scrape the offending herbs out of the chicken valley, but was unsuccessful. My spouse also tried to eat the chicken, also finding the herbs overdone and offending. The service was good and the wine fine. If you are looking for an authentic Italian meal, spend you money elsewhere. Head to little Italy.More

I wouldn’t call this an Italian restaurant. Beef Wellington? No, this is very Americanized food with bacon in a lot of the dishes. Pricey and noise. Friendly staff though and good wines.

Food was mediocre, place was dingy - my seat cushion was duct taped, very noisy. Management seemed antagonistic.

My wife and I tried this small restaurant on a slow Monday evening, and were impressed. The food was expertly prepared and delicious. She had the grilled fillet...prepared perfectly and 'melt-in-your-mouth' tender. Her risotto and asparagus were also cooked on point. My Tagliatelle with Bolognese...was delicious, and had just the right amount of seasoning. Our Cesar Salad was large enough to share as a starter. The chef is well skilled. The service was friendly and attentive. The atmosphere is 'date night' intimate, with soft lighting and music in the background. We will return on future visits to Boston.More

The ambience is nice but the food was not great. I ordered the gnocchi and it was tasty but nothing exceptional. The staff were super nice and attentive. My husband ordered the shrimp pasta, it was lacking salt and it was plain. Nothing special.

Arrived at this hole in a wall Italian. Down stairs to restaurant below street level. Greeted and seated. All of the staff very nice and efficient. The bread fantastic. Not warmed but very good. Escargot and Spinach Salad. I deleted the beets and had a...Caesar dressing. Ample and filling. Escargot average. Ordered the Ravioli and asked for their spaghetti and meat sauce because I don’t care for chunky tomatoes. Arrived and looked wonderful. Cut off a slice and found it to be hard as in very uncooked. I don’t know if they bake it but it wasn’t there. Cut off another slice from a different ravioli. Same problem. Sent it back and ordered spaghetti and meatballs. I don’t know why they do t have the cooks prepare an extra to taste and ensure everything al dente. Meatballs good, spaghetti cooked correctly. The sauce is almost brown, not a regular red sauce. People may like this but I found it completely foreign to any sauce I’ve ever had at an Italian restaurant. Overall didn’t care for at all. Took a few bites and took the rest to go. By now out of the mood to eat anything in this restaurant. Husband had Bolognese. Again, just OK. Restaurant condition; if this restaurant trying to pull off shabby UNchic they have succeeded. All of the tables and chairs need replaced or revarnished. It looks so bad and dated. The walls with unattractive art. The ceiling is what did it. It’s painted red and the pipes and has a concrete condition look like the parking garage in Surfside FL. Has this place been inspected? Would never return to this restaurant, dismal. Even though it wasn’t my taste I packed up everything, asked for plasticware and donated my meal to a very kind and thankful homeless person en route back to our hotel. Hoping he liked it.More

Great service, quaint atmosphere and fresh food. Starters for our party of 4 included escargot that made you feel like you were in France, mussels with perfect caper, lemon sauce and garlic truffle soup that made us use the bread to polish the bowl. Beef...wellington was cooked to perfection and the short ribs with mushrooms and gnocchi was delicious. Chicken parm was brilliant rolled rollatini in a light red sauce. Chocolate cake was very rich and banana spice bread pudding was unique. Drinks were top shelf. Best choice we could have made for Boston Restaurant week.More

While its very small and kind of hard to see, make the effort and you will fall in love. The seating is limited so make a reservation early. By its name you can guess its very under ground, intimate and romantic. The staff is great,...wine collection very strong but i also had a cocktail which was great. The food is the star and every item we had or observed was fantastic. Serious i know it all off by itself and not up by North town. Doesn't matter. this was the best of all the Italian eateries we tried.More

In the middle of a downpour we decided not to go across town to the restaurant we had planned to visit so the hotel driver suggested this restaurant which was near the hotel. You would probably never go there if you just drove or walked...by - it's tucked away in a basement and looks like a dive from the inside and out. But we had one of the best meals of the trip here, and very affordable. It's very close and small so if you have Covid concerns you will definitely want to go either early or late.More

We visited Boston for our 30th anniversary. I searched for a good restaurant for our anniversary dinner. I hit it out of the park. This restaurant is small (make a reservation) but it was incredible. The ambiance is great, our waiter Wes was attentive and...informative, but not intrusive. The meals pacing was perfect. And the food! My wife and I agree it was the best meal we’ve had out in a long, long time. We highly recommend Grotto!More

Now this restaurant is very "off" the beaten track for sure! And, it looks like you are entering a "Speakeasy" from the 30's. However, the food was delicious! The service was very accommodating; we did not order anything on the menu, but they accommodated our...special requests and without charging anything exorbitant. I only have one negative thing to say - their Tiramisu left a lot to be desired! If you are looking for something secluded, small but not exactly charming, with good food away from the mainstream - this is it!More

It is a couple of miles. I would take the Green Line on the T from one of the hospital stops to Boylston. It is a short walk from there.

Some on street parking is available in evenings and weekend....and there are a number of garages around that are reasonable for evening rates (i.e. $13.00 after 6pm).
