On 7/5/22 at 11:00 a.m. we called Peck's Bar B Que to place a take-out order. My wife spoke to a young lady for recommendations and portion sizes for a large order for 10 people, including 6 children. This order was to provide the evening...meal for a family in bereavement after the sudden loss of their father / grandfather. Within a few minutes we called back to place our order. The same young lady took the order, our name and number and gave us the cost, excluding tax, for the order. She said that it could be picked up later that afternoon at 3:00 p.m. At 3:00 p.m. sharp we arrived at Peck's and noticed a "Closed" sign at the take out window. A similar sign was on the front door. My went up to the door and saw two women seated at a table just inside the door. One of the women my wife recognized as an employee (owner?) from seeing her on previous visits to Peck's. My wife called through the closed door to the women that she was there to pick up her order. She gave her name and said she had placed the order earlier. The women just shrugged and never got up to come to the door. My wife repeated that she was there to pick up a confirmed order. The woman just shrugged again and never got up to speak to my wife. After trying to explain again that she was there to pick up a confirmed order and she still getting no response other than a shrug we left. My wife and I are bewildered as to why a restaurant would take an order, confirm it and then treat a customer so rudely.
Interestingly, friends of ours had, a few weeks earlier, arranged for Peck's to cater a very special Church event in Staunton for 200 people. Menu items and costs had been firmly agreed upon. Shortly before the event, Peck's notified our friends that the agreed upon price would not be honored and an additional fee of $250. would be added to the bill. After some conversation Peck's honored the original quote BUT would only provide the meat portion cold. With no other option, our friends accepted the terms. Thank goodness the Church had a kitchen in which the meats could be properly heated prior to serving.
We and most everyone we know here in the Staunton area makes every effort to patronize local businesses. But, this must be a two-way street. If Peck's is being deliberately sabotaged by employees to ruin the business they should immediately do something about it. If Peck's thinks treating customers poorly is a way to conduct business they should rethink that. If they are planning to go out of business they should at least do so with dignity.More
