We walked into a very lively mariachi band playing "Guantanamera." The ambiance was definitely happy, happy, especially because there were several tables of large families celebrating one thing or another. We were only two celebrating my husband's birthday. Brunch buffet is probably not the best...representation of any food for obvious reasons -- made in large batches that sit in heating trays for longer than they should and the food getting dried out or overcooked. Nonetheless, we found some very good things like the carnitas, the fish with mole sauce, cornbread casserole, menudo (trip soup), mexican rice with seafood. The brisket was very tough and with so many barbecue and smokehouses in TX, they probably can leave brisket off their menu. Tres leches and churros are a must, with the Mexican hot chocolate.More

No way one waiter must serve 20 tables, app for self ordering is terrible, poor employees worst job ever. At the airport you feel like walking out without paying, no service at all, and lady waiter even smiles! Apps do not do the job

Pros Hugo's opened its doors in 2002 and has been a cornerstone of Montrose dining ever since. This is not your typical Tex-Mex and it will throw some people off.The reason, its not. This is very much an authentic Mexican restaurant. The food is pricey...and the portions are smaller except for the staples of beans and rice. They serve non alcoholic drinks that are unique" Dont ask- Dont tell", etc. The ceiling is original and the atmosphere is nice but loud. Some wait staff wear masks, some do not. Talk to your waiter and not to the others as they do not follow up. A simple request like butter. Cons This is in the Montrose area. You need to look up the area. Parking is by valet only in a small lot. The Ken's and Karen's around the restaurant have managed to get no parking signs put up so parking is a pain. It always has been that way. There is a 30.05 sign hidden on the door, and is non compliant but had I not been in a pinch with family, I would have left. These signs may be a good indicator of a property owner's wishes to prohibit firearms on the premises. If a person carrying a gun, even those with an LTC, is ever told that firearms are not permitted on the premises by a person with apparent authority, they should depart immediately. Personally, because of that, I would not make a special trip trip to go there. Being forced to leave your belongings and family protection in a car, that may be unlocked, with a valet, is not my gig.More

Hugo's is not the standard take on a Mexican restaurant. The menu is more interesting than similar establishments. My dinner was very good My wife and I prefer the outdoor patio. Not noisy like the indoor dining room.

Hands down our family’s favorite restaurant. The brunch served all our favorites plus new ones. The music was an added bonus. It was so nice to see all the families enjoying a meal together.

I have been fortunate enough to travel many times to Mexico and many different cities, both large and small. So when I say unique, I mean this restaurant does not cook their food as most American Mexican restaurants do, but more like what you would...be served in Mexico. And that my friends is a very good thing! Their dishes are excellent. I had the roast goat dinner with tortillas, avocado, beans and roasted peppers. But these are made a very different way than you will find anywhere else. You will find they make at least 5 different margaritas, have an excellent wine selection and you must have their hot chocolate for dessert. I will be back.More

We came in as a slightly larger party of people, with family who were coming in from out of town, and this restaurant was both super accommodating and very friendly for our lively party with diverse tastes. The food was outstanding! The menu isn't as...big as some other Mexican restaurants, but the food was original (pan-sautéed grasshopper; roasted goat), and they have a good vegetarian section. Even though this restaurant was busy, it wasn't overly loud, so we could still all hear each other talk. Their wine recommendations were fantastic!More

We had one of the best restaurant experiences in our travels because of Ignacio. He is an exceptional manager and host. While sitting at the bar, he shared with us the background and history of the restaurant,‘made succinct recommendations from the menu, made spectacular cocktails,...and give us just an all-around warm welcome. He and his staff did an outstanding job of making sure we had the best experience possible and they work very hard to make it an exceptional. The differentiator though, is his warm and friendly nature.More

We were traveling through town and decided to stop for dinner at Hugos and we are happy we did. We had the guacamole and salsa with chips to start. It was very good. I had a Paloma and my friend had 2 margaritas and we...both enjoyed them. I had the ceviche verde and the Pulpo Al Carbon (octopus) appetizer and it was excellent. My friend had the chicken taquito appetizer and the tortilla soup and she loved it. We shared the churros and after everything else it was underwhelming. I also had the Cafe de Olla and it was very good. I would definitely recommend this restaurant if you are in Houston.More

I'm so glad I was recommended to this place which I've never heard of before. My wife and I were looking for a portion of real Mexican food, and both of us know our way of Mexican tastes. I'm not going to say much. I...just copied something from their website that says all: Authentic Mexican cuisine by award-winning chef Hugo Ortega, hand-shaken margaritas and a festive atmosphere make this one of Houston’s don’t-miss dining experiences. Talking about Margaritas, just try the Spiced MichoacanMore

Great service and food. We sat at the bar for an anniversary celebration. Bartender Jose served us, we were talking to him and he found out we were celebrating our wedding anniversary. Few minutes later the manager showed up and complimentary drinks and deserts commenced....Great service, great food and an amazing restaurant. We will be back 100%. We have also visited Caracol and Urbe and will visit all the restaurants under this umbrella.More

I'm surprised I didn't know about this place before, but I'm glad I was recommended to it. Yes, it is Mexican food but not your typical American food. There is a great variety of tastes and flavors even within one bite, and it's really good....I can't remember what my appetizers were called, but my main entree was enchiladas. Everything was very good and well seasoned. They are a bit pricey and there is a wait between each dish, but I'd recommend it to other people. Be prepared to tip a valet.More
