We have been going to What If for years and it was our favorite place to celebrate. We never got a dish that we did not like, until now. We went Saturday at 4:00 and we got some of our usuals, crab martini and lamb...lollipops and some new dishes. The lamb lollipops had different tzatziki sauce that was not as good. The crab dip had bleu cheese in it and it made the crab meat undetectable. All we tasted was bleu cheese. My husband ordered the filet with crab cake. The filet was tough and dry as a bone. He ordered it medium and it was cooked to medium, but was horrible.More

This is our second time here and it lived up to what we remember. The food is really good and so is the service. Very nice place. You wouldn't think this was under a hotel in the basement but that adds to the coolness of...it. They don't rush you so you get to enjoy your experience. The proportions are what you would expect. Try it once on your next visit to Hershey and you'll come back again in the future as we will hit this place each time we visit the area.More

I wish I could give this restaurant 6 stars. First, I will say that when we (a family of four)first arrived I saw this was attached to a Howard Johnson and got right back in the car. Then, I told myself it could be a...hidden gem. I looked at the menu posted outside and thought "ok, this delightful, appetizing menu is too good for a HoJos"...went inside, and had one of the best restaurant experiences we've ever had. Our waiter, John, was the best server we have ever had, hands down. It was an hour before closing, and no one else was there. He greeted us warmly, was nice to the kids, told us the specials, and genuinely seemed like he cared about taking care of his guests. Great personality! We started with drinks, and they were amazing. Then after ordering food which arrived promptly, he made every effort to check in with us. If the manager reads this...you have a gem of a restaurant and a really amazing server there. The food was delicious, absolutely no complaints. Top notch, we will be back when we visit PA next year!More

What a nice surprise. Seating was outside (due to covid). The waitresses and hostess wore masks. Brie (not sure of spelling) was our waitress. She was great. Cheery and attentive. We had the shrimp cocktail appetizer. Very good. We also had crab cake sandwiches. The...crab cakes had minimum filler (I assume there was some kind of filler to keep all the crab together. In other words, lots of crab. The crab cakes came with fries. The fries were very good and temperature was perfect, hot. Drinks were good. Overall, great experience!More

My husband & I were staying in Hershey for a long weekend two weeks ago (wedding) and my brother had mention to us of a 'really nice' restaurant that was underneath a Howard Johnson's of all things. We found it and made reservations. Yes, it's...underneatch a HoJo's and yes, when you walk into the lobby it smells like a typical Hojo's, but we walked down the stairs and opened the door to find a really nice restaurant, very pretty bar, dark atmosphere, table linens and fresh flowers on each table. I had an awesome 'white cosmo'. The crab cake appetizer was delish... actually, everything was delish down to the bourbon peach cobbler. Loved the atmosphere, loved the food and loved this place. This is not a HoJo restaurant where you buy hotdogs for kiddies. When we're back in town, we'll be sure to visit again.More

The menu selections are many and the taste has never let me down. Attending with a large crowd, I was amazed at how only two young women could keep the rowdy guys calm and serve all the many different meals (appetizers and desserts, too!) hot,...correctly and timely. Careful, the spicy shrimp cocktail is just that - but darn, it is good.More

This spot in the basement of the Howard Johnson Inn was surprisingly good. Dined with a large group of guys and all seemed thrilled. My seafood dish was small but tasty.

What If....you called and placed a reservation, specifically requesting a particular table, only to find out the table was not available when you arrived? What If...not only did this happen now, but happened one other time in the same year? What If...after apologizing profusely, you...were seated, only to wait over 30 minutes for your entree to arrive and discover your food was cold? Well then you would have been at What If in Hershey on NYE! There can be no excuse for not holding the table for the customer when...the reservation was made on 12/29 and emphatically requested the table two times with the call taker who confirmed the table was available, reaffirmed the next day when someone from the restaurant calls to confirm the reservation and then confirmed again by me on the day of the reservation. It reminds me of the Seinfeld episode about taking the reservation but not holding it.More

We just spent a wonderful New Years Eve at the “What If.” We are regulars who frequent this wonderful restaurant several times a year. We are never disappointed. But tonight was an even more incredible experience than usual. The New Year’s Eve celebration had the...restaurant running on all cylinders. The special menu was well presented and an incredible value. My wife’s salmon was perfectly prepared and was served with amazingly fresh vegetables including zucchini and squash. The dishes came out at just the right temperature. The baked seafood dish included shrimp, scallops stuffed with crabmeat in a delightful light butter sauce was fabulous. As always the wine list is fairly priced with a large variety of offerings from all over the world. The service was outstanding despite the busy night. Olive bread baked on premise is to die for and the olive oil it Is served with is succulent. The salads were very fresh and their house dressing is so well prepared. Joanna the owner is always in the center of a well organized staff. She adds a personal touch that makes all guests feel special.More
