On Tuesday, January 7, Luc Lac will be closing for two months while they renovate and expand their space. That sucks. I tend to eat here 1-2× per week when I am in this area. They serve very tasty food and, bonus, stay open until 4 am on Friday and Saturday. They are conveniently located and have a friendlier staff these days. Interestingly tasty non alcoholic drinks paired with a bevy of yummy vietnamese dishes make this a definite must when visiting Portland. I have eaten there the last two nights, getting the Luc Lac, their signature dish which is my favorite menu item. While this dish is almost always quite good, it has been exceptional the last two nights. I am sure they are trying to make sure I will miss them terribly while they are closed. Over the years, O have tried every menu item. All is very good, though I must admit, I have had much better pho, but I know people who love their pho, so who am I to judge? This is one late night spot where I will be counting the days (and nights) until it reopens.

First time here on recommendation from receptionist at hotel; needed some lunch while awaiting check-in at 4pm. You order at the front before being assigned a table for seating. I spent about 10 seconds reading reviews before being asked to order and thought I’d try the Pho since there were some pretty incredible recommendations, e.g. best pho I’ve ever had. However, I asked the cashier for recommendations for a first timer and she felt pretty strongly about the vermicelli/rice bowls so I went with the combination bowl and specifically the vermicelli over the rice on her recommendation. Not sure if I’ve ever had vermicelli before but it’s now my favorite kind of noodle :) it also comes with crispy rolls (choice between pork or vegetable) and I went with pork. The food was fantastic! Lots of good flavors and it was a lot of food; feel like it should prob be shared with two but I made sure to eat my protein and think I did a pretty good job with it though someone coming in without seeing it before I started probably would think I left a lot :) I had the shaken iced green tea to drink. For $5 it finishes quickly especially on a hot day so would probably stick with the free water that I saw after ordering or try one of the other beverages next time. Great find and will likely be back on this trip!

I was walking around downtown exploring and looking for lunch. I happen to see Luc Lac down the street as there seemed to be a line. One of my rules is that when it comes to food in a foreign city, you follow the lines. I found it was a Vietnamese restaurant and I have my standard staples of pork Banh Mi and spring rolls. I also saw they did green beans, so I ordered those to go as well. My hotel was a few blocks away, but the food was still hot when I got to my room. The banh mi was tender and had a lot of meat. I think the spring rolls could probably use a little more shrimp for what it cost, but it was still good. The green beans were also pan-fried very well and tasted excellent. I had probably ordered too much as I could not finish the green beans but knocked off the rest. I would definitely come back if in town again.

Got the sugar cane shrimp, papaya salad, combo vermicelli bowl, and the pho train. Sugar cane shrimp was okay, kinda of expensive for just two shrimps, and tasted how you would expect, like fried minced shrimp. The papaya salad was pretty good, it's a pretty big serving, I would probably get one to share with people because the entire thing is too much papaya for one person, like it was like 90% papaya, with three tiny shrimp pieces. The combo vermicelli bowl was...different, normally don't get (as much?) cilantro-mint mix, makes for a very different but refreshing taste...a tad bit too minty, but good overall. The pork, chicken, and crispy rolls were very average. Not much flavor and very dry and hard. The nem nuong pork sausage and shrimp were pretty decent. So yeah, don't get the combo, and skip the pork/chicken/crispy rolls and try something else. Pho train was good too, all the meat cuts were delicious and tender. However, and this is the most important part, the broth is just average. It's a bit lacking compared to what I'm used to. Walked here for pickup, pretty easy, walk up to the pick up order, and the order is ready right there. The wait for seating seems pretty brutal, overheard the wait is 1hr plus.

We ate here few days ago. This is so bad I don’t know what to say. The service was poor, you queue up and order. We had grilled pork rice bowl and grilled chicken vermicelli bowl and then we ordered a appetiser of pork skewer. The pork is exactly the same as the pork in the rice bowl. I thought the person who took the order could perhaps have the initiative to point that out and suggest we may wish to order something else, but nope, he is like a robot, just press and collect cash….. Both grilled pork and chicken are dried, hard, tasteless. The fish sauce with sugar gave them some taste otherwise it would not be edible. The menu was so restricted it doesn’t do justice calling itself a vietnamese kitchen. And don’t get me going about durian horchata, I know what durian taste like, thank you very much. That was artificial coloring with syrup or sugar water. That for $6, what a rip off. This is the worst vietnamese restaurant I have ever tried. I am beginning to wonder why is Portland known as a foodie place???

Cream Cheese Wontons: too many slices of raw green onion that distracted from the flavor and texture. Vermicelli Combo: Sausage was juicy but greasy, chicken was dry and bland, pork was dry and slightly bland, shrimp was fine but not noteworthy, Crispy pork rolls were a jumbled mess of non-complementary flavors. Noodles were soggy and the veggies didn’t taste fresh. Included sauce did nothing to improve the dish. Peanut Curry Chicken: Chicken was dry flavorless chunks of breast meat, half of the rice was mushy while other parts dry and hard, bell peppers, onions and green beans tasted fine but couldn’t redeem the dish. Beef Broth: Salty and rich with an out of place anise aroma. The only thing we finished. We had seen a long line of people waiting out front on several occasions so we decided to try it, after throwing away most of the food we couldn’t be more disappointed.

Upon ordering my meal I specifically asked to not have anything spicy to which I discovered they had put jalapeños in, after then asking to change this I was confronted by a smug waiter that said he would sort it I then waited 15 minutes by this time my colleague had finished his meal. I then went back to ask what was happening with my replacement to which they said they had not made one I was told the blame was on me and I shouldn't have added the Jalapeños to my meal, only then after I told them that if I ask for no spice why would you add them to my meal in the first place! By then they had realised that the blame was on them and replaced my meal which by this time I wasn't really interested in eating much of. Listen to what customers say, if they specifically ask for nothing spicy don't go adding it and being rude.

We were told that the ban mai sandwiches were exceptional, which drew us to a new experience in Vietnamese dining. Also enjoyed the signature beef dish -- which made great cold leftovers in the hotel room the next morning. Music was raucous, atmosphere was easy. We ate outside and appreciated that the meal was packed in cardboard rather than plastic.

A doorman at Saint Laurent in Pioneer Place recommended this place for lunch for my niece and me. It did not disappoint! Fantastic. We just had two small plates. Delicious. Coconut prawns and Cream Cheese wontons. The big disappointment was the Thai Tea. Tasted like a chemical mixed with perfume. Not only not traditional Thai Tea, but just bad. Couldn’t drink it. Should have taken it back.

Amazing combo bowl! I always get the combo bowl with rice. Four different grilled meats and crispy egg roll over rice with a briny fish sauce and cool green salad. I’ve tasted some of their other dishes too. But the combo bowl is so good that I can’t not get it. Covid take out is quick and efficient.

Fresh, fast, delicious and affordable. Not sure how it could be any better. I was nearby for a conference and this place was recommended by other attendees. Since I only get $25 for dinner I needed something affordable but also wanted something I couldn’t get back home. Great service and friendly staff.

I generally liked the experience. With music and creative decorations, the restaurant feels modern and doesn’t carry the tired ambience of many Vietnamese food shops. What it lacks is a bit of flavor and heat (I ordered curry stir fry). The salad was just not there - looked like it was transferred from a mixed greens bulk box into the plate. My friend ordered Pho and she said it was ok. In terms of value, this place just doesn’t offer any. $65 for two dishes and two regular soft drinks is steep regardless of how hip the place is. I wouldn’t return based on so many alternatives in the area.

We were in Portland to celebrate my birthday. We took two tours. One tour was a sightseeing tour so they drove by the restaurant and said it was a must see stop. Our tour on the following day was a food tour and we were delighted to learn they were taking us here to sample the menu. We had the Vietnamese coffee, the Sugarcane Shrimp (the only thing on the menu I wasn't thrilled with), wontons, and chicken wings. All I can say is the meal was amazing. So yummy that we decided to have dinner there the next day. We ordered the wontons and chicken wings again and added a Pork Bahn Mi. So delicious. We'll definitely be back on our next trip to Portland.

Worst food I had in Portland and I don’t understand the hype. Shaken beef is tasteless and tough. We opted to sit outside because of the wait, but regretted soon after. Homeless person harassed us. Food was boxed up so it was super hard to eat. Expensive and totally not worth it.

I ordered the chicken pho- I found steak in it. Rang them and found out that the chicken pho is a beef broth that I never knew about so that's one :( terrible thing. Secondly got a Chicken bowl two weeks before and the kebabs weren't fully cooked which terrified me. I think they should label the pho and fully cook the chicken so it doesn't make anyone sick.
