We popped in here for lunch a week ago and saw that they are doing Sunday roasts for ÂŁ15, so we booked. The Terrace is a really lovely place to eat and drink. It's got a really nice atmosphere, not starchy just welcoming and comfortable. The waitress, Ronnie, is fabulous. She's really attentive, remembers you and just makes sure you have a lovely time. All the waiting staff are just lovely. We are vegetarians so we went for the nut roast. Well.....we were not disappointed. Every mouthful was delicious. So flavourful. Crispy and fluffy potatoes, mashed carrot, cauliflower cheese, parsnips, cabbage and a yorky!

We had been staying with friends who live on the island and they took us here for lunch before we got our afternoon ferry back to the mainland. When reserving, they were told they could choose either a terrace 'pod' or indoor table when arriving. The lady who greeted us on arrival asked which we would prefer but was interrupted by another staff member who told her all three pods had been reserved. So we had our decision made for us. It was fine however as the restaurant interior is very smart and comfortable - kind of Scandi influence. The menu was not extensive but there was more than enough choices to satisfy our party. What really stood out was the pre fixe lunch. A starter and main were priced at around the same price as an appetizer from the a la cart menu! A dessert commanded a ÂŁ5 supplement but even so three courses were very keenly priced. Amazing value (but you did briefly wonder what an earth it would be like at such a low price). However, the pre fixe offering did not appeal to any of us and we chose from the a la carte. The food was excellent and nicely presented. Three of our meals were generous portions, whilst one (fish) looked small in comparison but was still sufficient. Two of us only managed desserts which were similarly excellent. Service was friendly and knowledgeable without being intrusive, maybe a little slow but it didn't matter, we had time. And maybe because the restaurant was full. It was a Monday lunchtime and buzzing so plainly a popular and well regarded establishment - and maybe the amazingly good value set lunch is well kept local secret!

The Terrace is positioned next to Yarmouth harbour where the ferry from Lymington arrives. With seating inside and out it caters for all weather conditions. We had a wonderful dinner inside moving outside to finish our wine as we exceeded our 2 hour slot. We were lucky enough to have the delightful Phoebe serve us who helped us decide which of the fish dishes would suit us best. 4 bass and a bottle of house Chenin Blanc were an excellent selection. The fish was moist and succulent with a perfect crispy skin supported by a tasty sauce and a selection of potatoes and vegetables cooked al dente. What’s not to like? We followed this with Banoffee tart and Crème Caramel which were both well balanced and exquisite and another bottle of Chenin Blanc. Phoebe was the perfect host arranging some chocolate brownies and decorated plates to celebrate our party’s birthdays and anniversary and then relocating us to the outside terrace with some blankets to keep out the wind chill so we could finish off our wine. Prebooked to catch the last available table here for a Saturday night so plan ahead! Thoroughly recommended!

This is our first time and our last sad to say , call first, as it was very enjoyable and sort the food was good value for money which is why we return for the second visit , unfortunately, we found the service very slow and because they were so busy the staff were very stressed and rude , we were actually embarrassed to ask for anything for the fear of being A hassle to staff and vowed never to return! we're invited back to school with some Friends, The weather wasn't great however, we all decided to continue with our reservation as cancelling last minute seemed a trifle unfair and we are always keen to support small businesses. Yet again, we were met by rude staff Who had the attitude that we were lucky to even get a table ... eventually, our starters arrived which were okay , when I say okay, we had waited so long, we were contemplating eating the napkins ! We could see the staff were all very stressed, and we remained very polite and despite a table across from us, being very noisy and having, but I would say inappropriate conversations for everyone to hear , this made us feel uneasy and two of our party being a slightly older generation, wanted to leave the restaurant there and then. The main meal was very nice if not a little cold but with the atmosphere, we really wanted to just eat and go , we asked for the bill three times and eventually it turned up, but was someone else's drinks order attached to it when we question this again we were meant to raise a rude attitude, bearing in mind, the waitress knew exactly what we had had to drink.. After the argument of the extra drinks we couldn't leave quick enough and has been pretty much the subject of our conversation over the last two weeks . It's a shame this wasn't an isolated incident as we understand in busy times restaurants do get pressures, but on both occasions to experience this really was very sad, and without doubt will not be returning or recommending , there are plenty of other good restaurants, close by with a match friendly service and certainly better value.

Let’s put some evidence together. The below reply is based on three months of extensive shift reports that detail any and all issues, notes and successes that occur on every service at The Terrace, coupled with a little bit of common sense intuition. 1. You set this account up today. 2. You have never reviewed anywhere else. 3. You make reference to loud guests on other tables 4. You write in a confusing, staccato and semi-literate manor that is incredibly similar to someone called Matt who I have just had to dress down on TripAdvisor for being a loud guest on another table. 5. You use a number of “big” words yet struggle with basic English. Writing analysis suggests this style of writing never evolves in an actual, real person. Look it up if you’re not sure why. 6. There has been one instance in the last three months of someone receiving the wrong bill for drinks which was the result of an incorrect button being added to the till. 7. If someone did receive the wrong bill for anything we would profusely apologise and rectify it instantly just as we did with the two glasses of rose referenced in point 5. 8. There have been zero days in the last 3 months where we had a wait for starters. We create starters that require little to no cooking when ordered and are prepared the moment a ticket comes in. This is the first report we have had of a wait for them in four years and how there could be a wait without the entire service having already collapsed is something I can’t fathom. 9. There have been two days over the last three months where we had a 20 minute wait for mains neither of which were particularly “busy” days in the chaotic sense you describe. 10. In any of the instances you describe no one would ever, ever have been rude to you at The Terrace. It’s simply not in our culture or thought process to do so. What would be the point or profit? It is against every discussion, every thought and every piece of interaction we ever have to do so. You can see our service is constantly praised for kindness, warmth and interest; how could you twice have encountered the exact opposite? 11. The only place anything someone might perceive as rudeness toward guests occurs is on TripAdvisor when, instead of talking to us like humans, guests think it’s ok to run down our staff publicly. It isn’t ok and it forfeits your right to be treated with the warmth and respect we extend to each and every guest in person. I am not allowed, under TripAdvisor’s self-administered, anti-business policies to claim a “review” submitted to them with no evidence is made up. So I won’t. I will leave you, the reader, to decide.

We were hoping the restaurant would have had specials as well as the standard menue but it didn't. The chef and waitress ( who is worth her weight in gold) bent over backwards to accommodate me and it was really appreciated. The female front of house manager was just over bearing and irritating with her over the top positivity. I shared a long email convo with Tom ( chef or owner) about the dish I had fish with a Provencal sauce. Whilst dining I asked how the sauce was made as it was so bitter and tasted like pasata.. The manager asked the chef and came back and said it was made with fresh plum tomatoes. Being a chef myself I knew this was not true. Tom via email admitted it was made with the juice from tinned tomatoes. Lying to customers about what they are eating is just totally unacceptable. I would really suggest swapping to fresh tomatoes and pass this extra cost on to customers as it would certainly make the dish more balanced and palatable. I suspect a retort maybe on the cards here from the restaurant but whatever is said I was lied to.

The Terrace
Dear Heidi. Interactions between a guest and a server should always be kind and respectful. This is absolutely fundamental to my team and I. In private and when dining, the guest is always deemed to be right. However, there is a certain point at which restaurants must accept a customer loses their right to be right and is instead politely rebutted. Public accusations of lying coupled with fairly hurtful comments regarding a team member are not the way to address disappontment and no restaurant should have to roll over and respond in a way that implies they are. Decency and common empathy, however, should always apply to any kind of human interaction. So, on that basis, I will refer to the following as “misinterpretations” as opposed to “lies”. The latter seems to me quite a cruel way to categorise how another person has perceived events. I do not recall us engaging in a long email conversation. My perception was that you sent a completely reasonable feedback email which I replied politely and extensively to including an apology for your disappointment. You then sent a blunt response asking me not to respond which, out of respect, I didn’t. I didn’t find the exchange long or really a conversation at all. I did, however, try to help. I do not recall “admitting” a sauce was made from tinned tomato juice nor do my chefs serve such a sauce. My perception was that I explained how the sauce was made including my own belief that plum tomatoes canned at peak season make better sauces of this particular style (deep & intense) than fresh tomatoes grown out of season do. I am not sure I even registered there was anything to “admit” to. My single intention was to provide information and apologise for your disappointment. I’m sorry I failed to do this. A lie is an absolute. It implies intent to mislead. Yet this situation is nuanced. To begin with the word “fresh” is vague as a measure of quality & doesn’t always equate to simple paradigms of bad or good. Beef hung for 30+ days isn’t fresh yet is widely considered the expected standard for quality. Fish served in the worlds best fish restaurants is typically over two weeks old and has never been on ice. It’s not fresh but it really is better. Frozen peas typically retain a great deal more sweetness than fresh peas & are therefore used widely in even the best restaurants. Canned seafood is far from fresh yet is revered across Spain as a delicacy. And who reading this could possibly make a better bean than Heinz? And even if they could, surely those beans would not be “fresh”, they’d be dried and all the better for it. Sometimes preserved or aged foods are simply better hence, the word “fresh” holds less significance as a measure of quality than we might imagine. Over 500 guests have eaten the same dish as Heidi this year and enjoyed it without concern over whether a single ingredient was canned. The olives in the dish are not fresh, the capers are not fresh, the garlic is not fresh. But why would anyone expect them to be? I spoke to our overbearing manager and she is adamant the word “fresh” was never used in answer to Heidi’s question as to how the dish was made but, if it was, she didn’t see it as remotely significant in terms of answering a general question about cooking methods and ingredients. Often, as humans, we hear the things we want to and act accordingly. Does this mean we lie? No. It just means we are people. We are all different and interpret different things in different ways. So perhaps, rather than say mean things about each other in public, we’d be better off just getting on with our lives while being thankful for kind restaurant staff who let us spoon feed our dogs at the table and answer all our questions to the best of their ability with a nice big, irritating smile.

We live in Poole and so it’s not far to Lymington for a trip to Yarmouth as foot passengers for lunch. I’ve also had a few overnight stays when sailing so know the venues we’ll. Like so many we used to frequent Saltys or The George before covid, but had seen a review of the Terrace so wanted to try. The outdoor terrace looks amazing for hot summer evenings but we ate inside on a quiet sunny yet chilly Monday. At first sight the casual decor looks more like a cafe but it provides a simple relaxing ambience. I’m sure the atmosphere might be quite different at night. We chose the reasonably priced Languedoc rose which was a great accompaniment to our lunch. We shared the delicious crab bruschetta then my wife had crab salad and I had the cod bathed in lobster bisque. Beautifully cooked and presented. We shared the croissant bread and butter pudding washed down with a glass of tokaji. Tom gave us great service , friendly and efficient and a great advert for the brand. Fortunately the ferry terminal is right next door which is just as well after our desert wine. A lovely spot with great food and we’ll certainly be back.

Lovely waiting staff, very kind food great price sensible slightly dismissive management at the end with a ''thank you, good bye'' receiving a cursory and dismissive nod. Not aligned with lovely junior staff. staff working really hard, 6 stars, management overseeing an extremely quiet night , 3 stars. so four overall. hope thats fair.

The Terrace
I contemplated a few times whether or not to respond to this “review” given its generally positive tone, but then I thought, “no, senior team members have rights too”. Over four years running The Terrace, what I find most interesting is how a series of cliches & assumptions about restaurants triggered by minor, incidental occurrences do more to shape experiences than we ever can. One such assumption is the divide of the young, hard-pressed worker exploited by the evil, penny-pinching boss who disregards the guests her team so love and care for; in this case triggered by a team member not saluting a well fed and happy departing guest with an enthused goodbye. In order to demonstrate the gulf of logic, allow me to elaborate on how teams are typically nurtured & developed in quality, customer-first workplaces. Good service & cooking come from culture as much as anything else. To have a dismissive individual leading any team destroys positive, service-orientated culture before any guest can hope to experience it. Effective teams must be lead by example and, from the top down, ours are. Even at a sprightly 70 years young the owner chooses to work shifts on the floor running food & clearing plates for our team. Aside from him, every single member of our front of house team works both supervisory and service shifts - we literally have no management-to-worker divide because everyone swaps jobs depending on the day. Our most senior front of house team member has a wide range of administrative tasks (ordering, planning and writing rotas) which she likes to complete in the restaurant on quiet evenings. This provides access to the stock and team members necessary to inform her work. Because she trusts her team and is absorbed in activity essential to their happiness both in and out of the workplace, her attention might not always be on our door. Nor should it be when micromanagement is as much of a leadership curse as disinterest. Trust is key, and in this case, clearly, the team had done their jobs brilliantly. What she cannot account for is the vast logic jump from “I did not receive a cursory goodbye from every team member in the building” to an inferred “the management don’t care about guests or staff and are lazy”. There was absolutely no need to post anything online regarding this hastily formed and fundamentally inaccurate opinion. If anything, saying nothing would be best, but for genuine, well-meant concerns about poor leadership impacting a meal, my email is easy to find and always open for a calm, thorough and private resolution on any kindly guest’s behalf. Public shaming achieves nothing other than making an individual feel terrible about their work ethic and questioning their ability to support our guests & team. Which, since you ask, really isn’t very fair.

We recently finished our weekend stay on the island with lunch at this spectacular restaurant We were lucky enough to sit in one of the glass pods on the terrace which was very comfortably furnished Our waitress Anita was so friendly & efficient nothing was too much bother for her The food was stunning, delicious, well presented and large portions.Great value for money! We could easily have stayed there all day. The position next to the ferry terminal looking out to sea means there was always something to see. We will definitely be going back and strongly recommend to others J&L Bournemouth

Perfect Sunday afternoon lunch at The Terrace - the sun even made an appearance so we sat outside and enjoyed the wonderful views. Food was first rate - try the Isle of Wight tomatoes for starter. Service was impeccable - nothing was a problem. Overall we spent just over a ÂŁ100 for two people 3 courses with wine water and the amazing caramelised onion focaccia plus coffees. Very good value considering the quality of the food and location. Will definitely be back for more!

We visit the IOW every year and always come to The Terrace. The food is excellent and obviously it's a great location although often we sit inside which is a very relaxing and nicely furnished area. The Manager (from Bridgend) was brilliant and made us feel very welcome and the other staff were very polite and efficient. We noticed that the Manager was keeping customer numbers within the ability of the staff (and kitchen staff) to serve us all properly. I thought that was absolutely first class! I have been to other restaurants where limited staff resources are overwhelmed on a nice summers evening with walk-ins and then everyone ends up having to wait ages for their food/drinks so a big well done from us to the Manager, staff and owners for all that you do and we look forward to coming back next time we are in the IOW

Lovely food, great service. We dined with friends and the restaurant was very busy, but we never had to wait for service and the food arrived in a timely manner. There was a group of 3 very loud women (using offensive language) near us, threatening to spoil our and other guests’ evening, but luckily the manager succeeded in quieting them down.

Actually, we went twice in a week, once for lunch with friends and once for dinner with different friends. Several of us are locals. Last week’s lunch was blazingly hot and we sat out on the terrace - just glorious. This week’s dinner was in the cold and cloud, so we sat inside - although the sun made an appearance in time for the most GLORIOUS sunset. What linked the two experiences was the quality and presentation of the food, and even more than that, the quality of the serving staff. These young people are knowledgeable, enthusiastic, personable and savvy and they raise the level of the experience. The food is beautiful - well presented, expertly cooked and using local produce. Try it!

Couldn’t be faulted. Great setting, delightful staff, really good menu and superb food. We had booked a table inside for our wedding anniversary lunch but as the weather was glorious, the staff quickly found an outside table on the terrace. All the staff interaction was warm with lovely smiles and a proper engagement. The speed of service was ideal - not slow, but not rushed either. At the end of our lunch, the staff double checked that we were celebrating our wedding anniversary and a surprise - and complimentary - dish appeared with beautiful script spelt out in a chocolate sauce. The marina was busy, so much to take in as we watched arriving and departing boats. A really great venue and location that we’ve been to several times. And on every occasion, it’s spot on!

On our tour of the island, we visited Yarmouth, what a wonderful pretty little place. We decided to sample some lunch at the Terrace. What a fabulous place, we dined on the terrace and chose from the castle menu, which serves lighter bites. We all chose the chicken Caesar salad with the anchovies which we paid ÂŁ3 extra each. The salad was absolutely delicious, the chicken was soft and tender and the lettuce crisp with just the right amount of dressing. The atmosphere was chilled and relaxed without being pretentious and all of the staff were so helpful and friendly. It was immaculately clean. We will definitely return.

We all had such a lovely evening at The Terrace. The food was absolutely delicious and the service was fantastic. One person in our group is a coeliac and they catered beautifully to her dietary requirements. We decided to sit outside even though it was overcast and likely to rain. The staff kindly put up our umbrella and brought out blankets so we continue to sit outside. We did eventually move inside where there then was a blackout, the staff were quick to bring in lights from the outside and keep spirits high. Absolutely outstanding service and food. Thank you so much to everyone at The Terrace!!
