Tucked into the upper corner of a mid century modest beach hotel is one of the best restaurants in the keys. Robert and Frida deliver consistently fresh meals prepared perfectly and presented with pride. Early bird specials are half price but certainly not muck smaller than regular priced portions. The shrimp bisque was wonderful. Wine selection is varied and reasonably priced. Duck is one of their specialties. The hog fish was lightly breaded and served with capers- perfect would be a good description. Recommend reservations since the restaurant is small.

You would never find this place if you weren’t looking for it. We were staying in room 3 of the hotel which is about 15 steps from the entrance to the restaurant so we just stumbled upon it. We weren’t very hungry so we only had soup and appetizers. My wife had the French onion soup and thought it was ok, but my wife makes the best onion soup ever so she is hard to please. I had the soup of the day, shrimp bisque and it was delicious. We both had the seafood crepe appetizer as our main course and it was more than enough after the soup. A very generous amount of seafood. We overheard other patrons raving about the duck.
The service was good and Robert, who I assume is the owner was very attentive, seating us, explaining the menu, checking on us during the meal and shaking our hands when we left.
I would definitely recommend it. It was very busy so make a reservation.

The reviews are accurate. This is a great dining place. Brightened up recently, the cafe offers well prepared dishes.the early bird dinner until 5:15 is truly one of the best bargains anywhere. There are at least eight dinner options, full size and well presented. It is a hidden gem in an oceanfront motel in Grassy Key. Definitely worth a visit. Recommend the roasted Duck, and the Fish Francese depending on the catch of the day,

We were hoping for a hidden gem experience, but left disappointed. The Cafe is on the top floor of a motel and seating is cramped. The chef is friendly and helpful, which was nice. However it took over an hour to get our entrees (which was 2 hours after being seated) and one of the steaks was almost raw despite ordering it for medium. The side vegetables were cold and looked like microwave side dishes. The bathrooms for cafe guests are at the lower level for the beach entrance and in disrepair (and look like restrooms for a campsite). For the cost we cannot recommend.

With only 4 days in the Keys, we are picky on our restaurant choices. After reviewing several sites, it seemed like Hideaway Cafe was what we are seeking. When I made the reservation, the owner Robert sounded almost like he was apologizing that he only had availability on the porch, but it was breezy out. No problem I assured him. With some tips from previous diners, look for the Rainbow Bend sign, pull in the sand parking lot, then look for the tallest of the pink buildings and head for the wooden steps toward the beach on the rear of that building. Robert greeted us at the door and seated us on the porch, so cute and romantic, and yes, breezy- but what a view! We went knowing they were known for their duck, that duck had a crunchy lacquer outside that was garlicky, sweet soy based and LUSCIOUS. We were thrilled also, that Johnathon and the Chef Frieda were the ones taking care of us. We felt like royalty. If you get told by Robert it’s breezy outside and he only has seating on the porch. Don’t miss the opportunity to be on the beach, jus wear a ponytail or a scarf and you won’t regret it.

I read a lot of reviews before I went and everything everyone was saying was exactly on point. I took my husband for an anniversary dinner as we were passing through and it was more then what we had anticipated. The owner and staff were very friendly and gave great food recommendations of items on menu and they were perfect choices. I haven’t had a good dinner like that in years!!! Well worth it but make sure you call and make reservations. I will be telling all my friends that will be traveling down this way. And thanks to the Chef for surprising us with a delicious dessert!

We ate here our last night and it was by far all of our favorites. Small resturant overlooking the water. Great menu - shrimp bisque, Shrimp scampi, bread with bruschetta !!, Hideaway Seafood Special, Duck, Steak, all entrees served with salad, bread, pasta and vegetable du jour. Thanks Robert for accommodating our large group (10) We will be back.

We have been wanting to get to this place for several years. It was on our list and we didn’t get here. Then Hurricane Irma hit and these people fought to come back. They lost everything. It was well worth our wait. A reservation is a MUST. You are greeted at the door like an old friend and sat in a quaint dining room. The owner Robert, stops by your table and goes through the menu. The Chef, Freida helps you with the wine selection. Chef Freida took our order and Robert stopped again to talk about the days news. Each course we ordered was wonderful and the waitstaff watched to see how fast or slow we were progressing. We never felt rushed. The food was perfect and fresh! Each item had individual attention. We had a wonderful evening and a great meal. We will be back.

Traveling the keys from Ohio. Heard about this place from a friend. Thought they were overselling it, they weren't. Had dinner on Sunday night...holy mother of pearl... amazing!! The escargot was like no escargot I've ever had before. Garlic, mozzarella, and spinach, wow!! The seafood Wellington, the clams and mussels, seafood medley with flamingo sauce. All exquisite. Chef's bananas a la hideaway had me drooling on my lady. So good.
Now, for the best part. We stayed at Rainbow Bend, and because we did, a "Continental" breakfast was included. Back to the hideaway for THE best blueberry pancakes I've ever had. Light, fluffy, with a hint of lemon. My lady had the homemade biscuits and gravy. UNREAL!! The chef not only Cooks it all, she came out to greet us personally. Grassy key better realize what they have. If they don't, somebody else will!!!

Don’t be deceived the outside, Hideaway Cafe is truly excellent fine-dining. You would pay twice the price at any other restaurant for the same quality of food. The hogfish was the best fish we have ever eaten! Not to mention salads and garlic bread are included with the meal. The owner, staff, and chef were very attentive and kind. Do not miss this hidden gem!

Amazing find. We had escargot and hogfish. The flavors were perfect and the fish was cooked perfectly. They serve a garlic bread with tapenade, great flavor. Absolutely one of the best restaurants we’ve eaten in.

Wow what a true culinary experience!! We were lucky to get reservations on a Saturday via Frieda. Keep calling for reservations as it may take you a few days! It’s worth the effort!!
If you arrive by 5 (with reservations) you can eat off the early dining menu where everything is $17.95. My husband and daughter’s boyfriend choose the duck. The boyfriend loved it but my husband didn’t as he said it was over cooked. I thought our daughter’s lamb was great and my husband said the lamb was the best lamb he ever tasted. I felt the same way about the hogfish! Let me add that the bread and the tapenaude that comes with your meal is also sensational! I wanted to lick the bowl! 😉Lastly the service is equally as fabulous !
We’ll be back!

Dinner at Hideaway with my wife while on vacation in nearby Marathon was one of the highlights of our trip. The attentive service, the quaint seating overlooking the beautiful beach below, and the high quality and superb preparation of our food made for a simply perfect evening!!!
Also, be aware that you must call to get a confirmed reservation. With that said, I owe a huge thank you to Chef Frida, who was very understanding in accommodating my apparent inability to make a valid reservation on a tough night for her and her staff. I will be forever grateful! :-)
So if you are looking for a memorable and romantic place to have a wonderful dinner with your better half when you are in the Keys, this is the perfect place!

I have been to the Hideaway many times since I own a condo in Marathon. I love the atmosphere and the staff. They are always professional and friendly and the food is wonderful. The owner is almost always on site and manages his restaurant very well. I have recommended this restaurant to many people and have never had anyone who was disappointed. So, head to Grassy Key, and enjoy the Hideaway. (You better call for reservations first.)

Went for early bird dinner offered 4:30 to 5:15. Reservations a must. Sat outside in cover deck area which does have windows but with the breeze was comfortable even with the heat. Early bird offers 8 or 10 entrees for $18 which are half the size of full entrees. So instead of a whole duck, I got 1/2 duck which was absolutely delicious. Very crispy skin with delicious sauce. One of best I have ever experienced, if not the best. Husband had filet Medallions with a huge shrimp which was delicious and at half size of normal still more than he could eat. Had enough for left overs the next evening. Delicious creme brulee for desert on the house as this was our first visit. Chef owner is totally awsome. Nice view of water. This restauraunt is at a motel and you must take stairs up to restaurant on 2nd floor. It is not a "fancy" venue but quality of food is outstanding. We totally enjoyed our experience and highly recommend.
