The decor says diner, but the food is far superior and much more interesting than standard diner fare. We've actually been to Poole's 3 times, including twice this month. Don't miss the macaroni and cheese which is always on the menu, but two other dishes...that we had recently were real stand-outs: the marinated avocado salad and the short rib pot pie. For the pot pie, they managed to create croissant slices of bread for the topping. The most buttery and airy "croissant" I've ever had and truly delicious with the pot pie. The staff is very friendly and efficient and wine recommendations are spot on. You may have been before, because it's been around for awhile, but you need to become a regular. I'd be a regular if I lived in Raleigh, and there are a lot of good restaurants in Raleigh.More

A must try - the Macaroni Au Grautin and bring a friend to share it with! Per the server's recommendation, I paired it with the delicious Brussel Sprouts! Clean, friendly with casual ambiance.

It had been at least a year since we’d last been to Poole’s diner. Enjoyed an early dinner with friends on a Saturday night. Our entrees were well prepared and the veggie sides were great. However, you can’t go to Poole’s without tasting the famous...au gratin macaroni ( the emperor of Mac & Cheese comfort food). We split an order for the table. Wow!! I’d forgotten how much I love it. Made a huge dent in my cumulative life time dose of saturated fat….but so worth it! Our service was excellent; better than usual. As always, this small place was high energy and very loud. A Raleigh Classic.More

Celebrated birthdays. Food and service were great. However, be careful where you park. We got an exuberant parking ticket. Hostess was not specific about correct parking lot when we checked in and could have cared less when we returned to get an explanation. Seems as...if Poole's is in cahoots with the City of Raleigh. Most likely will not return.More

Wow! We ordered almost everything on the board and ate family style. It was all delicious! My favorites were the seared ahi tuna, the braised greens, braised short ribs, Brussel sprouts, roasted beets and avocado salad. Others also raved about the ravioli and Mac-n-cheese. Seriously...everything was delicious. Hope to come back when I return to Raleigh.More

Had a night in Raleigh and a friend took me to Poole’s. Had a reservation and we were seated on 2 stools at the counter. Server checked in right away and we got started. Decided on wine as we had a apres cocktail at the...house and we were headed out after. Server recommended Land of Saints Pinot and provided a taste. Nice Pinot that paired well with all our courses. Ordered a chicken liver pate & some bread to start. Entrees were seafood stew & rabbit confit. All dishes were great and server was phenomenal. My buddy had a few questions about their sister restaurants and she filled him in. Fair prices and all the flavors were on that night. Would be my regular if I lived in town.More

The food was exceptionally well prepared, incredibly delicious and beautifully presented. The ingredients were so fresh and well paired. The flavors were rich and tasty. The portion sizes were perfect: not too small, but not too heavy. The greens in the appetizers were the best...I have ever had at a restaurant. Mac&cheese was super yummy. The flavors of the seafood stew completely blew me away. Exceeded my expectations and I would definitely recommend to a friend. Our server was very friendly, knowledgeable and thoughtful. She even wrote down for me the name of the greens from the salad that I praised so much and the name of the local market where they source the greens from. I was very grateful and appreciative. Well done, Raleigh! Thank you for a fantastic meal tonight, Poole’s! ❤️More

Unreal experience. Old school diner serving up too notch eats. You cannot miss the mac, wow truly stellar. I get what the fuss is about. Our waitress was outstanding and we started with a seared avocado and salad both great. My wife had the chicken...which she loved and I loved the steak. Unique cocktails too and the apple cobbler with peanut butter ice cream can’t be forgotten. Well worth the carbs!More

Nice selection of regional foods! Very nice wait staff, who were very willing to help with my food selection. Counter space was a little tight… the only suggestion is to increase the single wine serving size!

My colleagues were in Raleigh North Carolina for business. We made reservations at Poole for 7 people, showed up and were told they couldn’t accommodate us do to being overbooked. Two days later, we made reservations again. Was told we were all set, until we...showed up in person. Again, we were denied service and told that our reservations were only for 2 people. The “manager” was dismissive, saying she didn’t have time for “this.” It was quite clear, with no seated people of color, that Black and Brown people are not welcome at Pooles Diner. Which is fine!More

Delicious! Excellent service. Bright aesthetic, tasty meal and great cocktails. The eggplant parmigiana wasn’t too heavy. Focaccia pillowy soft.

The good: The service was great (except for being mildly slow int he beginning). Our waitress was patient and helpful in explaining the dishes. The mac and cheese was above average (not the best I've ever had.) but had a nice crust and a nice...unique flavor. The baguette had an amazing crust to it and was cooked to just the right level. The onion and gruyere tart was an interesting dish. Wasnt amazing but wasn't bad. One of the deserts we had was strawberry hand pies with lemon ice cream. The crust was light and fluffy with a tasty strawberry filling. The lemon ice cream was also really nice and I'm not usually a fan of lemon flavored things. The cons: The entrees were Bad. We got The beef shank which came out pretty dry and flavorless though the onions on top were tasty. We also got the cider pork cheeks on a bed of peas. The pork cheeks were cooked to a good level of tenderness but were pretty utterly devoid of flavor as well and the peas were super bland as well. At $30-40 a pop this should not be your experience. One of the deserts we had was the a chocolate hazelnut pudding type of dish with soft creme on top and it was just truly awful. The whole dish was bitter and earthy. Truly disappointing. We won't be back and I think there are many better places to spend your money in the Raleigh area.More

Poole's seems to always be full. We had late reservations, so many of the guests were finishing their meals and headed home. It felt like the kitchen staff had gone home, too! However, when the food arrived it was the same high quality we've experienced...in the past. I always order the pimento cheese and fried saltines - a huge serving, enough for 4 people. The unpretentious menu has down East (North Carolina) items, done in unique ways, such a chicken, pork chops, fish.More

Casual They want you to enjoy the food. It's not about the place or the special decor. It's the food that's the feature.
