This is a Forbes Five-Star restaurant, and it shows. The ambience is beautiful and elegant. The service is absolutely excellent! But the real showstopper is the food. Each course truly looked like a work of art. I've never seen such beautiful food. And luckily the...food was as delicious as it was beautiful. My favorite was the lobster dish. There were no details ignored--even the serving platters, dishes, and cutlery was beautiful. This is a great choice for a special occasion.More

We had a recent unsettling experience at Heron's at The Umstead, that led to the cancellation of 2 birthday parties and all guests, multiple medications, calls to physicians who recommended going to the emergency. This review summarises the incident. We went as a party of...five in late February during lunchtime to celebrate a birthday and we were seated at a semi-private area. Our server was commendable and diligently walked us through the menu offerings. We ordered drinks, appetizers and entrees. However, in between the meals, there was an unexpected serving of "smoothies" ... which it turned out later made with coconut milk that uses potentially harmful preservatives. We finished lunch and returned home to prepare for the evening dinner where a number of guests had been invited. There was a second person too who had the birthday on the same day and we were to celebrate it jointly. In about a couple of hours however, my spouse began to feel very sick ... and she kept saying that it seemed like she had had some strange sort of coconut milk ... . It seems Heron's did not use pure coconut milk - only $ 2-3 more than the ones with preservatives such as sulfites found in less expensive varieties that can cause severe side effects - especially for those with heart conditions. The situation got so bad by the time it was early evening we had to call a physician who upon hearing the symptoms recommended that we go to the Emergency and ordered prescription medications. We had to cancel all the evening plans, and even the joint party was cancelled - so it was 2 birthday parties all gone due to a single meal at Heron's. I informed the manager, but I believe the response was underwhelming. While there was an acknowledgment (after 2 days), the lack of transparency regarding the ingredients used and a seemingly superficial approach to addressing the gravity of the situation was not atypical even by everyday restaurant standards. This incident not only affected guests physically and emotionally but also raised concerns about the potential impact on future patrons. The response was in stark contrast to a minor issue at a similarly upscale establishment we experienced once before. The proactive engagement and personal touch they showed were conspicuously absent at Heron's e. While I understand the complexities of managing a high-profile restaurant, issues regarding the health and safety of patrons should never be compromised, nor should their concerns be met with minimal recognition. This review is being submitted to raise awareness of a situation that is reasonable, impacted many people and led to major health issues. Surely the restaurant understands how serious these can be but perhaps not how to best handle such incidents. The management should revisit their standards and hopefully realign with the service and attention that needs to be given for those 1% of cases when things don't go right. The birthday cookies were nice touch (this was good), but the smoothie that caused the major issue for the benefit of others made a turn that changed the experience in a drastic way for everyone who attended and those who had to miss the evening event.More

So nice to be able to enjoy a restaurant with great, creative food choices, excellent, well trained & friendly service in a quiet relaxed atmosphere with nice background music. A change from most restaurants with untrained servers in a noisy atmosphere. We enjoyed a nice...leisurely lunch for a special occasion but plan on visiting more frequently.More

We came to the restaurant Herons at the Umstead Hotel at 6:15 for a 6:30 reservation. Despite the restaurant being 80% empty the hostess told us we can not be seated, and we need to wait outside the restaurant where a seating area is not...available and not even a glass of water is offered. I protested and asked to see the manager that at 6:20 reiterated that we will not be seated a minute before 6:30 and refused to serve us anything until we are seated. I then asked to cancel the reservation and ended up eating somewhere else. Enzo Ferrari was famous for saying that he always produced one less Ferrari then he could sell (and by that creating the alure of an unobtainable object of desire that kept the prices and reputation of Ferrari going even when their quality was not at par. Heron’s, to which we have gone many times under different chefs and iterations is no Ferrari. Even Michelin 3-star restaurants in Paris (where we spend half our time) or NYC - Madison 11 inclusive, which was known for treating clients badly have stopped doing these things. The world has come to understand that restaurants that feel that they are doing a favor to their customers do not survive and restaurants, even the the best Michelin 3 stars ones, to which Herons does not belong by a long stretch, are at the end of the day part of the hospitality business. Hospitality to remind the condescending team at Herons is about being hospitable to the people paying for the dinners. A glass of water for those not allowed to sit at their empty table 10 minutes before a reservation is not too much to ask.More

Stayed at the Umstead for a girls night and enjoyed breakfast and lunch here. It’s expensive but delicious. The French Rose’ was the best I’ve ever had and the food is so beautifully presented. Service was great, especially from Pam. I made reservations in advance...and had to do the Open Table waitlist alert for one. I feel like they should allow hotel guests to eat without a reservation….especially at breakfast when there’s no other option available on property. We had to haggle a little bit to eat an hour earlier than our reserved time. Also note- the chairs are very heavy and hard to move.More

First time I’ve visited in 8+ years but still a good experience and doesn’t feel tired. Started with the tomato salad, which was good but not incredible (the tomatoes were not as flavourful as I would have liked). What really excelled was the salmon, I’m...not a huge salmon fan but this was incredible, probably the best salmon I’ve ever had.More

My wife and I had a great experience here. This was our first time and we plan on coming back. Every staff member was great, especially Mike, our main server. They all greeted upon arrival. Mike provided us with recommendations for each of the courses....He was very friendly and had a conversation with us. We had the 4 course meal for dinner but I am not sure if there is any other alternative. The portions weee just the right size and we were definitely full when we left. All the food tasted great and seasoned properly. I would definitely recommend and will be back. I would love to try each of their seasonal dishes as their menu changes seasonally.More

A truly remarkable Dining experience. Service was impeccable. We chose the four course dinner with wine pairing. With several surprise servings it was more like a 7 course event. It would be an injustice to describe the servings because the shock and awe of each...presentation was part of the splendid experience. The Sommelier visited our table and explained why he chose the wine for that specific serving. The kitchen was visible from our table and it was a treat to watch the culinary artists at work. The presentation was beyond description. A very special evening!!More
