Wasn't sure exactly what to expect, as there is very little information about the 'experience' on offer on their website/reviews.
I had seen that you needed to book well in advance, so I tried to do this about two weeks before our visit. I was...nearly laughed at over the phone and told to call back on the morning of our visit. Luckily, on the morning of our visit, they did have availability. I asked about the shuttle service, and they said they would pick us up from outside the police station in Kut, which was very close to where we were staying. They asked what time, and I said 6, thinking that after a tour of the winery/tasting, we would then be ready for food.
When we arrived (takes about 15 minutes to get there from Kut), we were greeted by a lady who spend about 2 minutes explaining how their food is cooked in the tradtional way in a metal 'bell'.
We were then escorted over to the winery, where we spent about 4/5 minutes max with the hostess who explained about how the winery came to be. It felt very rushed and impersonal, and there was no offer to taste the wine (which we would have been happy paying for).
It was not what I was expecting at all, having visited several wineries in the past. The staff were friendly enough, but it felt like we were being sent on a conveyor belt as quickly as possible.
We were then sat at our table outside. The next part is not their fault and is not a reflection of my review score. The lighting started, and got closer and closer. All of the tables were set up for the evenings guests - but the staff did not look phased at all, and I thought, they must be so used to this, and must know that it won't actually rain, so did nothing... and then it did rain, and all hell broke loose. We were moved into a small indoor area, along with another couple of groups who were dining at the time. The indoor space was quite hot, with no AC, but we understood that it was an outside restaurant and they were not set up for offering indoor dining.
Our peka was served - we went for Octopus, to keep traditional. It was tasty and served with more potatoes and rice than we could eat. We had a few glasses of the white wine. We tried both the lighter and darker. I preferred the Bugava, which I think is the darker of the two.
The bill we were given was wrong, and one of the glasses of wine was charged as a full bottle. Our waitress was apologetic about this and I think it was a genuine mistake, but perhaps check your bill. I also noticed an item on the bull 'SIR KG' charged at a quantity of 0.1. Now, as far as I knew, service is never included in the bill in Croatia, but as this was charged at '0.1 quality', I assumed that this was a 10% service charge. But as we left, our waitress escorted us out and I thought that she looked disappointed/confused about not getting a tip (which we would have done, if I hadn't thought that it had been included in the bill). I now think that this was not the service charge, but I still don't know what it would have been. I have not seen 'SIR KG' on any of our other bills. Perhaps in future, these items which are not self-explanatory, should be explained to customers.
I also noticed that there was a 130kuna charge for the shuttle service. Now, this is fine, and is probably a lot cheaper than a taxi - but it is something that guests should be made aware of. You can't offer a shuttle as if it is free, and then charge for it.
Overall it was a nice experience and felt like an evening spent in a traditional style, family run winery, which is what we wanted. But comparing it to other wineries we have visited, it was a bit of a let down. I have a feeling it is run by older members of the winery family who are not keen on making any changes to give guests a better experience, only getting them in and out, with the least amount of work possible.
Also, they do take card payment. Along with a lot of places on the island, they will say cash if you ask - for obvious reasons.More
