We stopped in for a quick lunch and plan to come back again! The food is really good. I especially enjoyed the cucumber salad and my husband liked the potato salad. The gyro was excellent. Looking forward to our next visit!

If you're looking for a great small town bar with friendly service and good bar food, you won't go wrong at the Nite Hawk in Slater. Midwest pricing abounds as I'm reminded every time one of my buddies from Chicago rolls through town. The namesake...for the bar pays tribute to the former Semi Pro baseball team that played it's games at the ballpark right behind the bar. At least three former Major League Baseball players cut their teeth with the Slater Nitehawks in the 1950's and 60's. Dick Bertell, Jerry McNertney, and Larry Bittner. If you're on a bike ride, or just driving through Central Iowa looking for a good lunch spot the Nite Hawk is great place to stop for a quick lunch or lazy afternoon and evening.More

We had 11 people with us, 9 were biking. It was a busy night. We were able to get our drinks quickly at the bar, but ordering the food took a little longer than expected. We were told 1 hour to 1 hr and half....It actually only took 40 minutes. They were trying their best to slam the food out. Everyone was happy with their order and the taste of the food. It is a fun place to stop. They have bike tools for last minute adjustments and a place to refill your water. Indoor and outdoor seating.More

Good food but service can be slow. Good outdoor and partial outdoor seating. Indoor area can get very noisy so if you want to talk go for partial or full outdoor seating.

Stopped in to eat and rest after riding in 96 degree heat. They had big fans outside, they were great!!. They also have air and bike tools available if needed. The salad and chicken tenders were were very good but the fries tasted old, they...was the only negative. Staff was friendly. Fun atmosphere. We’d definitely go here again if we get the chance to ride the trail again.More

We spent the day riding the High Trestle Trail and at the in stopped into the Night Hawk bar and grill. It's and open air bar with good food, cold drinks and great music playing. The bartender was friendly and seemed to enjoy chatting with...anyone that came in. They also have a spot to fill water bottles and an air pump for your tires if needed. It was a wonderful way to end a long ride. I highly recommend this place.More

5 couples made a day trip from Ankeny to Slater. The food was awesome & large portions.. Split an order. They had Key Lime Mosco Mules for $5 special. Staff is great. It took awhile to get our food & bill. We will return. Inside...& outside seating. Inside has 2 sets of doors that are open, so no AC.. Just shade.More

Great little place to come for a quick lunch, nice dinner after a ball game, or a snack and refreshment anytime. The people are courteous, friendly, and embody the hometown spirit a place like this needs. We often drive the golf cart up with the...kids and have always enjoyed the experience. The menu boasts many good offerings fitting the bar menu style. I like the sausage sand which with the Graziano's patty and veggies, it's the real deal. The grilled loin is tender and flavorful. The pizza is great with a thin soft crust and tasty toppings. The homemade chips are a great side with a juicy burger. The fish dinner is also a great choice with a cold beer. Several of the offerings are hand prepared which is a nice break from the lazy distributor based menu that's common these days. It's a small kitchen, so you won't get McDonalds or Culver's speed. But you're here, not there. Stay and enjoy your time. You won't be disappointed. We'll see you there.More

Converted from Slater's old city hall, this restaurant/bar is literally on the High Trestle Tail, which makes it an ideal spot for cyclists. Named for Slater's baseball team and decorated with a baseball theme, it serveds great bar food made from locally bought ingredients.I've tried...several of the sandwiches, the fish and chips, and the onion rings, but my favorite is the patty melt with fresh ground beef, caramelized onions, and melty cheese. Salads are available, too; I really enjoyed the taco salad. Prices are reasonable and the serving sizes were just right. One of my favorite spots!More

Stopped in for a drink after we were at the winery down the road. They have two sections to the bar one outside that is usually bikers that come off the trail and an inside area. We chose to be inside as at the time...we arrived outside was very busy. Our waitress was very good and even if we were just having drinks still gave us good service. Fun stop on a Sunday evening.More

So glad to see the Nite Hawk open early on a Saturday morning. Enjoyed the cold drinks and helpful staff as we cooled down from our bike ride. When we said we would pay if we could get ice for our water bottles, we were...told there was no need to pay for frozen water! Often when we have traveled to other bar and grills along trails, we had to pay for ice. The staff was also knowledgeable about the High Trestle Bridge and gave us advice about continuing our ride. Great place to sit and relax with family and friends.More

This used to be a nice place to eat right on the High Trestle Trail. Now they seem to have abandoned food service in favor of the more lucrative bar trade. The restaurant used to have waitress service outdoors and delivered your food quickly. Now...you have to order at the bar. Last time I was there, my food had not arrived after 20 minutes, so I asked about it. I was told that they were "backed up in the kitchen," but the place wasn't even half full. After another 10 minutes, the waitress came by and tried to settle my bill when I hadn't even gotten my food!! I asked another 10 minutes later--no food so I cancelled my food order. Actually, there wasn't anything there to cancel--after 3 repeated requests, they hadn't even put the order in in the first place! 40 minutes of my time wasted with no food. It's probably too late for them to turn things around this season, but if owned this place, I would hire all new staff for next year.More
