We drive by Cole's from time to time and decided to try it for some ice cream today. After ordering at the outdoor window and waiting for our ice cream, I looked inside the window and was disappointed to see the filthy kitchen. I reluctantly...took the ice cream but walked away thinking I'll never go back. In short, the outside of this restaurant depicts what the inside looks like. Beware of unsanitary food preparation areas.More

Just ordered ice cream. Wasn’t fresh. Saw cook tear open bag of frozen fries with his teeth. Ewe. Not what Expected.

This place is classic Americana. The owner couldn’t have been nicer to us. My boys loved their pork tenderloins and fries. There is no better reward after a long bike ride than stopping here afterwards.

Love the Cole's tenderloin. Thick. Meaty. Perfect blend of spices. Made to order... You can even hear him pounding out the tenderloin after you order it. Impressive. A word of caution... Most of the seating is outside, so he's not always open. Call before you...go (but after they open at 11am). We sat outside in a sunny location where the building blocked the light breeze and had an enjoyable chat while we ate... Even though the temps were only low 50s. I wouldn't plan on eating inside..More

We bicycled down from Ames to try their barbecued sandwiches. Had the pulled pork which was both generous and good. The good food just barely makes up for the decor, cleanliness and order which is redolent of a Depression roadside cafe in the Texas Panhandle...circa 1938. They would have a great offering if they cleaned/painted/fixed the broken air conditioning/kept things neat.More

The quirkiness on the outside of the restaurant (a roaring werewolf and giant Chewbacca head over the door) combined with the name of the restaurant (which happens to be my stepson's name), beckoned to us to stop in. The ambiance is grungy (read dirty with...tiny round tables). There was a bit of an odor inside and it took a while to get our food. My husband ordered the tenderloin which was huge. Despite its' size, he said it was so/so since he's not really a tenderloin fan. I ordered the inside-out burger. It was two thick hamburger patties with cheese in the middle. The burger was tasty and okay until I encountered raw hamburger on the inside and a nasty taste. I took the sandwich back up to the counter and reported I couldn't couldn't eat it because the meat on the inside was raw. The owner, who offered to fix me something else, told me it was hard to tell if the meat was fully cooked because the patties were so thick, but he assured me he had used a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature. When I mentioned the bad taste when I got to the middle he immediately realized I was referring to the bleu cheese that was inside the burger, which he happens to love. Basically, the large menu selections are written on a big chalk board and there are no details about the sandwiches. If I had known the sandwich had included bleu cheese I would NOT have ordered it. Rather than ordering a different sandwich I opted for a refund of my money. I'm sure the owner works hard, as he built the restaurant in memory of his late son.More

Great tenderloins, served at a place that could use a good cleaning. Less than $10 worth of clean up supplies and elbow grease and it will improve. Just get the tenderloins to go! Fresh, hot, best tasting I have had and my friend's pic is...up on the wall, as he's a foodie and has given this place a top score for that tenderloin. See pics. Marcydiner tantrum scale of 5/5-no screaming kids. Place needs cleaned up and it could get 5 stars. The price of the tenderloin was worth it, but it is $8 plus tax for just the sandwich. So, if you happen to be driving thru Slater, worth stopping. Fries are $3+ many other food choices.More

Iowa is known for breaded tenderloins and this one is huge. Be prepared to take half home with you. The hot fudge sundae was equally as generous. Enjoyed the drive to get there

The wait was crazy long for no one else there. The food was fantastic. No Sysco specials here. Shared onion rings, I had a cheeseburger, my husband had the famous tenderloin. We both agree food is great. Good flavor. Large portions. BUT, oh my god!...The bugs outside, cobwebs, clutter and garbage (there was even an amazon box next to the outdoor tv), general disrepair inside and out, and just plain filth that should be cleaned were so unappetizing that I would've left if we hadn't decided to give it a shot no matter what. I will start with placing our order --- it was like there was ADHD making the signs or that the offered food changes everyday or something. When I went outside I saw more choices. Organizational reset is sorely needed. The owner (I would guess) seemed friendly. The dining areas should have a solid deep clean at least once a year. The cobwebs and dust near the indoor tv would indicate it hasn't been done in many years. The back patio area reminded me of my grandmas house. She was a junk collector. Being a restaurant, it is not appetizing to see massive ants, regular ants, bees, and a ton of flies while eating. Should've gone to a park. I probably would've given the place a higher rating had I never seen that. But when you see stuff like that, including a back door that was disgusting, you really wonder what the kitchen looks like! And if the food is safe to eat.More

I cannot give a favorable review. Not very clean and junky looking outside. Maybe he means to have all that "stuff" outside to cater to kids BUT it looks junky.
