Wonderful menu full of things which Had never ween before. Many questions of the waiter- what does this mean, what does that mean Empanadas were great with rough ground tortilla shells, smoked blackened turkey, many dishes with citrus of one form or another adding to...the zest. great food, served hot, Wonderful interior, open kitchen and attractive bar My only concern is that like most restaurants these days, noisy. IS it cause we as a population have lost our hearing? Is everyone drinking loud mouth soup? But a really good place. Would go back next week with no hesitationMore

This restaurant in Old Town Tustin is a great place for foodies with its unusual Mayan flavors. Most of the dishes are (relatively) small plates designed for sharing, but everything on the menu looks so enticing, it's easy to order too much. Most memorable were...the citrusy crudo (the particular kind of fish served seems to vary), the tortillas topped with tangy pork belly, and the richly flavored duck (salbute pato ahumado), topped off with the pillowy bombas for dessert. We will come back for those. We liked the mushroom ragu, the octopus, the cauliflower, the Caesar salad, and the pibil but might not order them again. A tough crust on the rich cheese-filled empanadas proved the only disappointment. The excellent specialty margaritas vary from smoky and spicy to refreshing. The atmosphere is buzzy. Once the restaurant is full, conversation gets more difficult. We strongly recommend early reservations and seats on the patio as a little quieter.More

Michelin Bib Gourmand Awardee Chaak was the site of our most recent Fridate. It boasts of Yucatán-Mayan cuisine which we haven’t tried before and what a delicious discovery it was! We ordered several small plates. Listed below are what we tried: ranked from my “most...favorite” to “won’t order again”: Pulpo al Guajillo $19: charred octopus, chayote, red chorizo and super duper tasty garbanzo purée Almejas al Vapor Picantes $19: little neck clams, green chorizo, super duper yummy herb broth, scallions and avocado Castacan $21: 2 confit pork belly tacos, negro salsa Esquite $16: grilled corn, bone marrow, lime, cilantro and pecorino cheese Tamal Colado $17: wild mushroom ragu, spicy pork sausage and scallions (It’s a NO for me) Loved my cocktails and dessert for sure: Tamarindo con Chile $15: mezcal, orange, tamarind paste, agave Guava Brava $15: tequila, passion fruit liqueur, guava, cranberry Panna Cotta $12: perfect sweet ending to a lovely meal The ambience with a retractable roof, patio dining, modern interior, food quality and presentation makes it the best restaurant in Tustin. Alfredo was walking the floor making sure everyone’s having a good time. Best to reserve on Opentable especially on weekends as it gets very busy. Pix & vids on IG: @i_therefore_concludeMore

First of all, let me explain who Chaak is as the restaurant's website does not explain who this important deity is. Chaac (spelled variously as Chac, Chaak, or Chaakh) is the name of the rain god in the Maya religion. Chaak introduced maize (corn) to...the Mayan people. As with many Mesoamerican cultures that based their living on rain-dependent agriculture, the ancient Maya felt a particular devotion for the deities controlling rain. In Mayan mythology, Chaak is also the brother of Kinich Ahau, the sun god. Second, we were very impressed with the quality and innovation of the dishes we savored at Chaak. The food was simply delicious and full of complex flavors and textures. The ambiance and customer service experience were outstanding! We highly recommend this very innovative and cool restaurant. We will be back again!More

After seeing them on the list of restaurants having been awarded the Bib Gourmand by the Michelin Guide just a few months ago, Chaak Kitchen piqued my curiosity, leading me to book a nice dinner here. I would recommend making a reservation because even on...a week night this place was packed and full of energy. You won't miss their beautiful full bar as you enter and the environs is fun - they have a retractable ceiling and the front is wide open with lots of airflow. A bit chilly at night though so dress warmly. It was an easy pick as I spotted the Guava Brava Margarita on their cocktail list. More tequila won't hurt but the flavors were definitely enticing. Given that this is a Yucatan cuisine and not the typical Mexican food we're so used to, their menu was fascinating to study. Dishes like Grilled Pulpo with chorizo, Octopus Ceviche, Oaxaca Cheese Empanadas, Elote with Bone Marrow, and Duck Tacos were ordered by our party. My highlights were definitely the first three mentioned and I would order them again in a heartbeat the next time I'm here. Their version of beignets dipped in dulce de leche ended our night here on a high note.More

We were there for a birthday celebration. Love the creative food, but it was a very loud dining experience. We had a 6:30 reservation, but only got seated at 7:27pm. We were very hungry at that point. The waiter made up for the wait time...by bringing us their delicious Sikil P’ak / pumpkin seed dip, totopos, cucumbers, hummus appetizer for the table. If you prefer to yell and have the waiter/guests repeat themselves numerous times in order to hear, then this is your place. I am sure with reading the reviews the owners will improve on the customer experience because it is worth their success and the place is well thought out for atmosphere and cuisine. The Chefs are well trained, but the main entree food is VERY pricey! I am sure the price also reflects the expense of building this beautiful modern restaurant with tasteful ambiance. The Servers are friendly and accommodating. The cocktails and food are creative and delicious. I know it is a relatively new restaurant, so we are hoping they are working more on the efficiency timing of reservations, and an appropriate music volume to make this a stellar experience, and one to repeat.More

Had to wait for table. Even had reservations...just opening with plenty of tables. Best steak since Covid-19...it seems other resultants were buying cheaper beef. Service was good. A little on the pricey side.

I had to look up everything on the menu before arriving so as to not ask too many questions. I chose the Huaraches, which was made open faced on a blue corn base. It was filling and unusual, loved the pureed bean base and the...generous avocados. A bright, cheerful place with a very pleasant server.More

Had been wanting to visit here for a long time so decided to grab takeout on a whim. I asked how long it would take so we could walk around first, but they said it would be very fast so we waited around. Well it...took a very long time and then they only brought a half the order. It took another age while we waited for the rest of the order. I think it was just forgotten. By the time we got it the rest of the food was cold. When we went to eat it, one of the items was not what we ordered. So maybe cold, and the wrong order is not the best judge but this was disappointingly bland and not worth the wait or price.More

Following the school closings, event cancellations and dire warnings to curb the spread of COVID-19, we carefully ventured out for Sunday brunch here. (I had read about Chaak in Westways Magazine – it has the same chef/owner as Gabby’s in Orange.) With its open roof...top and outdoor patio, the bright, airy restaurant was half empty – plenty of room for social distancing yet still a friendly vibe. With the waiter’s recommendation, I chose the hearty, spicy chicken chilaquiles with a fried egg, crema and avocado – so good! My husband raved about his Yucatan-styled eggs benedict – poached eggs on puffy corn tortillas with black beans, greens and chunks of thick bacon. While there were lots of creative cocktails to choose from, I went for the nonalcoholic, tangy soursop fruit juice. Our attentive waiter encouraged us to come back for even more delicious specialties for dinner. If you’re feeling fine, keep your distance but keep dining out at this outstanding specialty restaurant.More
