Superb food and service in an atmospheric location. Yes it is expensive but this is Iceland and this is the best, so it was worth it. We had the special menu, lobster soup, lamb or salmon and chocolate mousse for ISK8500. Plenty of local beer to choose from too. We wanted a treat and this exceeded our expectations.

The restaurant occupied a prime position right on the main roundabout in the centre. It had an attractive homely interior. We ate upstairs. We were very pleased with the quality of our meals - beef tenderloin was available in a half portion or full portion size. Cooked to perfection. The lamb skewers in an orange sauce were succulent and flavoursome. Skyr, served with fermented blueberries, white chocolate and almonds was a delightful way to complete a meal. The three balls of ice cream, served with white chocolate and a chocolate ganache was fine. It seemed odd that it was served with shoe string potato chips. Service was very friendly and timely. A most enjoyable dining experience.

My girlfriend and I were visiting Iceland from the US and ended up at Tryggvaskli because we were too tired on our last night to drive back to Reykjavik for dinner. The restaurant was beautiful and had such a cozy and welcoming environment. We started with drinks and the lobster soup which was incredible. For our entrees, there was a slight mix-up where I ordered the Ribeye, but our server brought out a salmon dish. There's a good chance I said the wrong thing since I was exhausted from all of the driving and hiking we'd done over the past few days, but our server (I think his name was Magga) was extremely apologetic, even though it wasn't his fault, and made sure they started cooking a ribeye right away for me. He even brought the salmon dish back out to me and said I should try it, since it's really good, as they worked on my other plate. The salmon was so good that I probably would have told them they didn't have to cook another dish if I had tried it earlier! The ribeye came out a few minutes later and it was fantastic. When our bill came, Magga discounted everything due to the mix-up and was constantly wanted to make sure everything was to our liking. Definitely not used to this level of service and hospitality and just wanted to again extend our thanks for him for everything. Our dinner was the perfect exclamation point on our trip and was such a fantastic reminder of how incredible this country and it's people are. Would 100% recommend and we will definitely be back on our next visit.

We chose this restaurant because of the ratings. The duck confit was nearly inedible as the duck was overcooked- it was hard and dry on the outside leaving very little tender meat near the bone. The accompanying salad was so oversalted that we had to ask for a different salad- very unlike us. The lamb skewers were good, also a bit overcooked with no pink, and the side potato salad was dry. Prohibitively expensive. Ouch.

Charming restaurant with river views. We were casually dressed but also a good place for a dressed up dinner. My 3 friends and I ordered the salmon pesto, Ling cod, beef and shrimp skewers. The salmon was the best of the three. Ling was ok. The skewers were over cooked. They cooked beef and shrimp on the same skewer which way over cooked the shrimp. We were expecting separate skewers of each, expecting each to have been cooked according to its specifications. Disappointed. Staff was lovely and the service was good. But the food was just ok

We decided to come here Because they had gluten free options. It was false the fries said gluten free and they had flour there is no option for gluten free. Also we waited 2 hour for our dinner and they completely forgot my Cousins husband food after waiting 2 hours. Do not recommend at all horrible service and food.

A cute spot. The menu is limited and the food was good and inventive. I had the cod (which was slightly over salty but delicious) and while the chutney was an odd pairing I kept them apart and it was fine. My husband had the burger and when he went to tell them how he wanted it done was told "we don't do that in Iceland. The chef makes it how he thinks it should be." This worked out for my husband because he likes a rare burger but if I had ordered that I would not have been able to eat it. Most of the reviews say how nice the staff is. While they were not unfriendly, we were the only people in the restaurant for quite a bit of time when we first arrived and there was no attempt to speak with us or see how things were going. Not sure how they can handle it when they are full. One final note - and this did not effect my rating but I feel compelled to share it - the music is atrocious. I don't mind different styles of music but this was the worst of a rat packy mix anyone could come up with. Overall, I would recommend.

This restaurant was charming, had great food, and great service. There were 6 of us, and we had a round table in a small room, which made it so easy for conversation. The restaurant is in an old house, so all the dining areas are broken up into small rooms/sections. It's charming! There was a good happy hour drinks menu (and alcohol can be $$ in Iceland!) and the food was amazing.

We visited Iceland for 2 weeks and had diner each day at a different location. We had the best meals in this restaurant, we had a delicious fish soup, outstanding beef tenderloin and special ice cream with crumble as desert. They forgot to bring my daughters hamburger at the same time and rushed immediately to have it brought , we even got it for free which was very appreciated.

Our family of 4 had a really good meal here at Tryggvaskali. I was glad that I booked ahead online because the restaurant was full when we arrived. We tried the horse carpaccio and whale tataki for fun appetizers (small portions). We had the steak, fish, lamb kebab and chicken salad. The fish was really good, fresh and delicious. The lamb kebab was tender and the crispy potatoes were so good. The steak was tender and cooked perfectly medium rare. I had a blueberry cocktail that was tasty too. I highly recommend booking a table here if you're staying in Selfoss.

The Lobster soup was so spicy that I could not finish it. Tasted nothing like a lobstersoup. The portion was so small and only two very small slizes of baguett did come with it. When my husband asked for extra bread that was not possible witout paing extra for a slize of bread! What a ripp off. I ordered a glass of white wine with the soup but could not finish the glass as the strong spice from the soup made the wine taste funny. Such a shame as this restaurant is so cozy, but we will not come back here.

I had high expectations given the reviews, for the quality of the food I ate much better at Vik and in other restaurants even at lower prices. I wouldn't go back. Excellent service, atmosphere like a local tavern.

Me and my husband came to this restaurant following the many reviews and locals’ suggestions and we have been very happy with our choice! An absolute MUST GO! Service was quick and friendly , portions were good. The horse tenderloin was no short of divine. Loved the quirky decor of the place too! ♥️

After our absolute "shipwreck" in the underground tourist shop "Ingolfsskali Viking Restaurant" (see review there), we came back to Selfoss at the last minute and on a whim (and because of the good reviews here on TA) to Tryggvaskali. And - balancing justice. There was actually a table free and the evening was saved! You could literally feel how everyone in our family breathed a sigh of relief because we were served here on the first floor in a super friendly and comfortable way by warm service. The cocktails to start with were remarkably good, the wine list is nice. But the food was also really good, especially the (unavoidable in Iceland) lobster soup, which was outstandingly good here (especially compared to Kopar and Fjöruborðið - which both boast of having the "best soup"). The main courses (rib eye, burger, cod etc.) were also top-notch, rounded off by (I'll happily repeat) a very attentive and friendly service. Despite the disappointment beforehand, it was still a really great (last) evening in Iceland.

Excellent burgers on fresh rolls with a Big Mac type sauce that seemed to be homemade. Fries were cooked to perfection. Nice glass of red wine to wash it down. Service was good too. We would return again if we make it back to Selfoss.
