Arrived in Hluhluwe earlier than expected and didn't fancy the chain stuff in town.A little way out of town, found Fig Tree. In a rally tranquil spot, with lotts of shade. Staff very friendly and the food was really nice and not expensive. They pride...themselves on home cooked.
There is also a nice curio / gift shop next door which is worth browsingMore
We are not surprised this pleasant cafe is so popular; as far as I am aware there’s nothing else like it around for many, many miles.Great coffee and simple lunches served on the veranda with a convivial buzz from the busy tables.

We are so pleased that you found us, and delighted that you enjoyed your visit. Thank you very much for your review.
We spent several nights at Zulu Nyal (see separate review) and were VERY pleased that another guest recommended this place. The first time we came we both had the grilled prawns which were huge and flavoursome. The second the burgers were visually awesome and packed...with flavour. They could have used a little binder as they were impossible to eat without a knife and fork as they fell apart easily. The third we moved to toasties and pinwheel salmon and cream cheese and back to prawns!
The setting is delightful, the management warm and friendly and the staff are really trying to be their professional best. The lead staff member was absolutely charming and proactive, occasionally chivvying other staff members to up their game. Of course service levels aren't Michelin - this is a café! But everyone was making a great effort to implement the high standards managemen wanted.
For me, one of the best features was the craft beers. I soon discovered at ZN that they were catering for American beer tastes and began to despair of having a decent beer during my stay there. The Fig Tree has "craft beers". Not the most descriptive title for a beer that's twice the price of the others on the menu - discouraging exploration. But we persisted and were rewarded with two incredibly tasty beers - Jackal and Kudu (they didn't have Impala due to vagaries of the drink distributor). A rich, deep IPA and a rounded, mouth-filling lager.
The café is frequented by a lot of local Afrikaans speaking tour groups but it seems less discovered by Europeans. That's a shame as it deserves to be more widely known. If we were to return to the area we'd definitely return to this establishment. I only wish we'd found it earlier as it made ZN passable.More
