Imaginative cuisine!

Travelling from Australia, we always stay Blue Mango, flying in and out of Johannesburg, it's convenient, and value, and management go the extra bit for clients. But also, the food at Okapi is always exciting and innovative, prepared by a chef who obviously enjoys making eating for his guests a special occasion. Recently had delicious zebra, crocodile and giraffe dishes, all cooked in his unique recipes. (And the meat sourced responsibly) Thanks, and glad you weathered the disastrous Covid years!

Absolutely fantastic An experience never to be forgotten

Looking for places to eat can be tricky especially when you are new to a place or country. Most of the time I tend to lean towards a Kfc or McDonald's just to save me the stress and time but I suppose this time I wanted something "different" .I guess I got more than I bargained for when I came across this fantastic establishment . Whilst scrolling through the endless catalogs of been there , done that restaurants on trip advisor, something stopped me when I set my eyes on the okapi restaurant. I contacted the listed number on whatsapp and got a reservation in quick succession . The person I talked to who I later found out was the owner, Yess the exuberant stevie himself gave me the necessary details and assurances on that covid guidelines were being followed and before I knew it I was at the venue. Before I even get to the food the place is absolutely fanatastic. I'm talking a real world class garden, beautiful decor and lighting which left me wondering why this place doesn't have michelin stars already. I met stevie at the door, most polite of a man who makes me feel comfortable and offers me a pint "as if I have ever refused one" 😂 and somehow we end up in dialogue over how we think the English national football team arent any good😂. One hour just flew by and I hadn't even ordered yet. The starter menu was precise but boy was it a banger. Totally blown away by the flavours and presentation of it all. I then had the oxtail as the main, grant it I had never had oxtail before but if I knew it tasted like that, it's all I would ever eat. Please don't take my word for it this food is goddamn fanatastic . I'm no food critic and couldn't fry an egg but as I said before this food is gorgeous . Congs to stevie and the entire crew back there it's really a fine place and I would recommend everyone reading this to not pass this place up. Thanks Stevie for the experience and I will be back soon.

Birthday brunch

Stevie went out of his way to provide the perfect birthday brunch for my wife. The special request for crocodile meat took some doing to source (I contacted some time before with this request) but made with a special recipe absolutely delivered in expectation. All the other food was hearty and excellent, all served outside in their lapa. This was rounded off with a birthday cake which Stevie sourced to our specifications. Overall an excellent experience which we will repeat.

Amazing local dishes and fresh ingredients

Okapi restaurant is amazing. Stevie and staff prepare wonderful versions of local dishes with fresh ingredients from the farms around the lodge. We had grilled zebra with a super fresh organic salad and amazing homemade potato wedges. Also had lamb potjie in the Cape Malay style--delicious and tender. We were too full for dessert, but those sounded great as well. Wonderful meal in a great place!!

A Taste of South Africa

We stayed in Joburg for several days and found this wonderful place. As it is a little ways outside Joburg, we took an inexpensive Uber to and from the restaurant. Okapi is located in the Blue Mango Lodge and Stevie is the chef. He offers a very unusual menu and it is prepped ahead of time, so it is essential that you make a reservation. Stevie will ask what you would like to eat and what time you will be there. The first night we had zebra and ostrich and even though I had a little misgiving about the zebra (too close to horse) I found it to be delicious. My ostrich was cooked to perfection and so we made reservations for the next night. We both had the ox tail and were very happy with it. On our third visit, we tried the steak and the crocodile (tastes like chicken). So there is something for the traditional eater as well as the more adventurous diner. Stevie is a great chef and a fascinating host, and we felt like we were dining in his home, not a restaurant. We got to meet his wife, who is a lovely person, and his daughter, who loves to talk about her pets. This is a truly unique dining experience. WhatsApp Stevie at +27 79 512 6364 to book your table. Mouth Watering Freshness

The lunch, breakfast and dinner I had was out of this world. From organic chicken to a succulent steak and a blend of locally sourced vegetables, it was an unbelievable experience. To top off, a wealth of knowledge shared by the chef/host on South African wines (over a bottle of wine of course!) made the final dinner memorable. Truly remarkable food!

Birthday Dinner

Stevie, the chef and our host for the evening, went out of his way to give my wife a most memorable dinner to celebrate her birthday. His mushroom starter was the best I have ever tasted! A superb dinner was followed by a chat in the well stocked bar as Stevie shared his love for music with us. Okapi a la Carte restaurant is truly a hidden gem and well worth a visit!

Not conventional, organic foods well cooked and combined to a good wine. Informal ambient to relax, and Steve was very friendly and helpful and kind with us to make dinner special and confortable. Excellent quality /price ratio. We recommend!

Best in town

Had to take some North American business partners out for a dinner. Did not want to do the typical around the airport. Found Stevie's place. It worked out perfectly. Stevie was a great host and made the evening very memorable. The food was exceptional. They people I took out had a great time and had a unique south african experience. I will be back again.

Great food and wine

Hidden Gem in the East Rand

My Father-in-Law made a dinner reservation for us as a family at Okapi, to Celebrate my Mom-in-law’s birthday. Our host and chef Stevie prepared a beautiful three course dinner, served to us in the private dining room. What an exceptionally enjoyable experience - a warm homely feel, good wholesome food, prepared with love. What an interesting place. We would love to visit again during the day to experience the beautiful gardens and spa. Our host Stevie entertained us with the photo gallery of music and movie artists in the bar area, his life story of how he ended up in this part of the world and his talented wife. Thank you for a great culinary experience. We will be back. VK

Lovely Breakfasts and Dinners

I've enjoyed more than a dozen excellent meals at the Olkapi. They serve an excellent hot breakfast, one of the best I've had on the continent, and delicious dinners. Meticulous attention is made to fresh ingredients, freshly prepared, and freshly served. The chef is self-taught, so don't expect a sous chef; but some top-notch African-English fusion with sesame and ginger? You bet!
