About
Coquille, founded in the spring of 2014, has already received the honor as the “Best French Restaurant of 2014” by City Weekend, “Restaurant of the Year 2014” by That’s Shanghai, “Best French Restaurant of the Year 2014” by ShanghaiWOW!, one of the Top 5 New Restaurants in Shanghai in 2014 by SmartShanghai, “Best Western Restaurant of 2014” by Modern Weekly, “Shanghai Best Restaurant of 2015” by Tatler, and “Best Bistro of 2015” by That’s Shanghai, one of the “Shanghai Best Restaurant of 2015” by City Weekend, “Best French Restaurant of the Year 2015” by ShanghaiWOW!. The restaurant’s unique, inconspicuous, and glamorous design brings the romanticism of France to Shanghai. The restaurant name, “shell” in French, is a modern representation of a classic French seafood bistro, elegant, but approachable femininity catered towards women. Coquille’s menu is familiar, yet surprising with roots in classic French cuisine, and elevated by Asian and California interpretations. Classic dishes: Coquille Seafood Platter, Foie Gras Creme Brelee; Specialties: Escargots; Signature dishes: Red Heart Clams au Vin Blanc, Oven-Roasted Dungeness Crab.

I live just next door so this french bistro is convenient Entry was inconvenient as the staff insisted on me scanning the QR code despite my green code They have set and a la carte menus and we had the latter. For starters, the stuffed squid and kingfish sashimi were very good. The mains of yellow croacker and lamb rack also very good. Good service also Will return to try the beef wellington and others

When you want something a little different and don't want to go to the Bund for a meal, this is a perfect option. Every other table had the beef wellington; we had all seafood and it was very good!

Thoroughly enjoyed the meal, but the waiter forgot to bring our appetizers altogether, and it took forever for dessert to come. Still, the staff was friendly and the food excellent.

My last visit was 4 years ago when they newly opened. Cooked by Chef Oakley From the ambiance, food, chinaware and service are excellent!! highly recommended food: Seaweed cracker with Tatar baby scallop ( I think), truffle scramble eggs and crabmeat cake. ( kudos to the chef )

Beautiful small place with a large oyster bar and excellent seafood. A little outside the regular tourist paths, thus quiet and comfortable. Prices are adequate for the quality of food and service

We visited this restaurant at the recommendation of some friends and reviews. The restaurant is located out of the common expat circles, but easy access by subway. We thought the menu offered traditional French dishes and should not offer any unexpected surprises. Although some of the portions were a bit on the stingy side, we thought the overall meal was quite good. The chef clearly takes pride in what he serves, and the staff is obsequious and efficient.

The restaurant location: - It is very close to exit 2 at Ma dang Rd. The restaurant ambiance: - feel like family gathering, comfy, warm, filled with laughters - Christmas decorations - Elegant table cloth holding - 2/F is also a very nice area for family gathering or team building. (The pics of 2/F in tripadvisor are not true. The environment is as great as the 1/F) The food: - Chef Patrick is a talented chef. His presentation and combination of food taste are excellent. The food is all tasty!!!!!

We had a nice dinner at Coquille seafood bistro. We took their frog, crab and scallop and everything was super good. Service level is very good and needed to be highlight for a city like Shanghai where the service level is far away from our standard. just one bemol, when you make the reservation ask for a quiet table because if you have some Chinese group around your romantic dinner can turn into a nightmare.

This was our second visit and had been looking forward to taking our friends for a real treat after the excellent first experience ! Starter and main course were good but menue has changed so not the selection we were expecting ( after looking at website) . Desert should not have been allowed across the pass, , passionfruit tart was burnt base with liquid filling that tasted uncooked. Service was very slow at the beginning drinks took 40 minutes to arrive and there was lots of "looking but not seeing" from the waiting staff. Then they repeatedly tried to remove plates while there was food still on them and we were very obviously still eating off them . In the end they stood next over us watching us waiting for us to finish so that they could remove the plates . we had not taken a long time to eat the food, they had taken a long time to deliver it. The noise level in the restaurant was very loud and very close tables meant it was not an environment where you could talk easily and had more chance of hearing the person on the next table rather than your friend sat opposite you .

Two super big points to note about this cozy restaurant and the food: 1. It has a fantastic seafood menu and then oyster bar that is pretty special. They have choices of oysters from many different places around the world. 2. If you're not a big seafood guy this place of some of the best beef around. Short rib, Beef Wellington, and a huge Tomahawk steak are all fantastic with great flavor. I brought an Australian to the restaurant for dinner and he was amazed how good the steak is. He said he has rarely eaten steak this good even in Australia. If you want to know how many pallets this restaurant can please, I had my dinner together with, a local Chinese, a German, a Haitian and an Australian, and everybody was in love with the food. The New Zealand white wine we chose was also a perfect match and had a great taste. Overall this place is a winner.

We came here on the advice of the manager of Villa Le Bec, and chef Jason Oakley exceeded our expectations. As an American who has been a Chef at some of the leading restaurants in the world, including the Mandarin Oriental Shanghai, this is his first venture into his own restaurant concept. Most of the people who dine here are from China/Shanghai, about 20%-30% foreigners. For our dinner, Chef Oakley created an an amazing tasting/dinner menu for me (vegetarian) and my two friends (who love seafood and everything!), which was artistic, flavorful, and sumptuous. There was a deconstructed avocado dish that was amazing. Will upload photos later (camera not working well). We were lucky enough to meet the Chef, and learn more about him and his vision. The service at the restaurant is OK, and does not match the quality of the food -- at least, for non-Mandarin speakers. The wine menu is quite nice, and they could expand their offerings upward. We were lucky that Chef shared a new French burgundy with us. All the food/produce is locally sourced, with a few exceptions for some Bostonian and Japanese seafood (if I remember correctly). Chef actually has had private dinners for some of our Shanghai friends, who are VCs or involved major business ventures. They love his talent and food taste. The restaurant itself is in a transition location between an developing and developed neighborhood by the French Concession. As such, the price point is extremely reasonable for the quality -- please consider asking for the tasting menu. If you love seafood, fabulous food taste, intriguing favor combinations and great presentation... this place is for you. The moderate service is a small tradeoff for a great memorable meal.

The food in general has ok ! But very disappointed with the service and also the atmosphere! I think for the price is much better to go to the bund and enjoying the view at list ! I will not come back because they not make me comfortable and also to say wow ! Come back to the food is ok but not exciting!!! If we ask me to recommend I will not ! Need to improve a lot for many ways !!
