Vanca's serves elegant cuisine from the heart of the Balkan peninsula. Chef Ivan Tsekov likes new friends and is happy helping everybody make a good selection of food and wine. Come visit us and you will enjoy our traditions and our hospitality. Reservation is required for Friday and Saturday nights, call restaurant after 2:30 pm to make a reservation, PLEASE NOTE KITCHEN CLOSES 21:30! I have lived in Shanghai and have been dining at Vanca’s for almost 4 years now. It is one of my favorite restaurants In Shanghai. The food is always good and Ivan, the owner, is making sure you have a great dining experience. My favorites are the suckling pig, pork knuckle, cabbage rolls, and the sea bass. Ivan has a nice wine selection and some really delicious reds from Bulgaria that I love. I guarantee you will love the the food and the restaurant.

Beyond great food, a real dining experience

I found this place by chance. The owner just invited me in, and that was it. I was hooked. I lived in Shanghai for years, and every time I was going out for dinner by myself or I was inviting friends, I would always go to Vanca’s. Even now, in the middle of this pandemic, when I talk with friends, this restaurant and it’s owner always come into the conversation. The food is great and actually super nicely priced. But yawns be absolutely delicious pork knuckle, the very satisfying ribs or any of the other absolutely spectacular dishes (if you’ve never had Bulgarian food, it’s difficult to understand, but trust me in this one), Ivan, the owner, is really the reason why you should be going there. He is this one person who knows how to make you feel welcome, and who can read on your face what you wanna have for dinner. This is absolutely amazing. Do yourself a favor, stop delaying and go to Vanca’s.

Same Delicious Food For Many Years

We have been to this place many times in the last 10 years and it never disappointed us. I must say that it is not easy to find a restaurant in Shanghai which has been on business (and in the same location!) for such a ong time. Their huge seabass is our all-time favorite with the pita breads and shopska salad on side. I'd definitely recommend this place.

Best grill in Shanghai and most welcoming and charming host

Delicious ribs, and the most amazing seabass, served with fragrant rosemary potatoes. So yummie! Make sure you also try the shopska salad and the selection of fantastic Bulgarian wines. Highly recommended!

Great dinner, very friendly people

I been there with friends for dinner. My Bulgarian friend took me there. Food is great, ribs are fantastic, fish too, portions are big. Price is really good too. Moreover the owner is very friendly and treat us very good.

Vanca is most welcoming and hospitable

If you would like a more European style restaurant in Shanghai, with tablecloths and wine glasses arranged and a decorated interior – even a menu that you can hold without your having to consult the Internet… Vanca’s restaurant offers all of that. Come here for good Bulgarian fare – visitors from Central Europe will recognize many of the dishes from home. Vanca is most welcoming and affable; he has travelled the world as a cook in high places and in the hospitality business. The Shopska salad is the best this side of the Black Sea. The sea bass is also expertly prepared and presented. If there is still room for desert, try the camembert with cherries. Not to be missed are the Bulgarian wines (which can be ordered by the glass!) – the white Tamyanka is truly worth tasting – very special with notes of peach. Vanca has a fully stocked bar and can even propose Bulgarian digestifs: the slivova plum and rakia grappa. A visit is definitely recommended!

Vanca’s is my favorite restaurant in Shanghai. Cozy, friendly with great food and nice atmosphere. Ivan makes it really good. The ribs are definitely the best in Shanghai!

Went to Vancas two nights in a row. Ivan and his wife are wonderful hosts!! The food?? Go and taste it for yourself. The bread, the mixed grill, the sea bass and lamb is excellent. I have declared this my home away from Beijing. Ivan spoke to my sister in the Bulgarian dialect. He's so warm and generous! 🤗🤗🤗🤗

A piece of Bulgarian heaven in the middle of Shanghai

I stumbled across Vanca's one night while looking for another restaurant, and I am glad I did! We were the only people in the restaurant, and spent a lot of time speaking with Ivan. I promised him I would return, and did so the next night! The food was absolutely phenomenal. The second night, my colleagues all ordered something different, and we were all able to try a little of everything. I must say that all the dishes were perfectly prepared, and presentation was also perfect. Make sure you come hungry, because Ivan is extremely generous with the portion sizes. I'm a big guy, but I think everything dish he served us was enough for two meals. Salads were also amazing - very fresh and full of flavor (not just a pile of lettuce with some lousy dressing like you get so many other places). I plan to visit Vanca's on every trip to Shanghai, and have highly recommended to everyone I know that is heading that direction.
