We stumbled upon this place while manoeuvring the narrow alley in Tianzifang. Climbing up the steep steps, we found a quaint and cozy little cafe. They serve very good coffee, and food is great too. We love the quiet and serene ambiance, totally cut off from the noisy and crowded Tianzifang.

Thoroughly surprised to find this place as we were stumbling through the Tian Zi Fang alley. We climbed the steep stairs to find a very cute and cute spot with an enclosed balcony area surrounded by lots of greenery. The staff were great and could converse in a bit of English which helped. Note the menu is extensive but very worth the wait and the price. The food was healthy and delicious, it had a very homely feel. Highly recommend this place if you want to escape the Tian Zi Fang (If you've been here, you'd know what I mean!)

We climbed up steep stairs to reach this cozy space. The friendly server handed us iPads to look at the menu. The house coffee that came with the lunch sets was good & freshly made. The Special luncheon set (Tamako with clam miso and rice) came first. Nicely presented. The bbq pork cutlet served with sliced cabbage was good as well. A pleasant lunch in a quiet space before descending to the crowded alley to resume shopping.

Cozy small cafe, not pretentious and offering home style japanese cooking focusing on good ingredients. And yes, it has a price in China.

Stopped in while shopping in the area. The coffee was amazing and the cups are all handmade! Try a green tea dessert. We had lunch while we were there and the food was pretty good. However, I highly recommend the coffee!

Very Japanese style coffee place in the middle of 泰康路. Tiny place, large menu. Most of clients are Japanese nationals here to taste the Japanese good roasted coffee taste like you will only find in Japan. A nice place to check out. Even the ice cubs in your coffee will be make from coffee... Japanese délicatesse.

There's a welcoming quaintness to this cafe that I really love. To get to the upstairs window box you head up a stairway / ladder that's difficult to describe - good fun but probably nerve-racking if you have a dodgy hip. The service was very friendly if a bit leisurely (standard hipster stuff really). The food was surprisingly good considering that the menu is quite broad. Overall we enjoyed this, but the cheapest coffee is about £4 and it was over £30 for a light lunch. iPad menus with English make ordering easier for English speakers. Also, the area is absolutely worth a visit.

I am a big fan of the Japanese cuisine and it was absolutely delicious. The sushi was great and the green Udon noodles also very yummy. When you're there, try the special coffees which are very very rare and hard to find all around the world. The service was alright but not able to speak a word of english. something you should get used to in China. The menus is very big and prices are expensive. Therefore, only a snack-bar for me.

Favorite restaurant/cafe in the entire world. Delicious, humble, and simple Japanese food. Don't miss the green-tea udon noodles, kelp salad, ochazuke with salmon, matcha cake, and of course the coffee (I suggest the Yemeni varieties).

A Japanese theoretical physicist apparently opened this cute cafe that looks like a hole in the wall but is actually 3 stores high with a challenging old style Japanese staircase that looks rickety but is actually quite safe to climb. The menu is extensive and annoying to refer to only because it's on an iPad interface so you have to jump from section to section to order and you forget what you ordered earlier or have to flick back to change your mind. Other than that the food is excellent and the prices reasonable. Each level has a different feel from a ramen shop at ground level to a cafe on level two and then a tatami style loft on the third floor. Fun to explore with good eats. I liked!

The food was not bad but I felt it was a tad pricey. The service was slow at first (to bring us the menu) but afterwards, the waiter was nice to stand beside our table the whole time. Some may find it disconcerting but we thought it was okay as we seized the chance to ask him about local attractions. Tip: Have a seat at the table outside the restaurant as it makes for a nice place to people watch. During the cold spell in Nov/Dec, warmers will be placed next to tables which is a nice touch.

This is a cool, charming Japanese restaurant smack in the middle of Tianzifang, Taikang Lu. It's famous for its coffee and authentic Japanese food. We sampled some drinks and tiramisu which were really delicious. The tiramisu is top knotch quality! Two other things to take note are the unique staircase and expensive food and drinks.

Our local friends brought us to this quaint little cafe in Tianzifang recently. What a delightful little eatery! The menu is rather extensive for a "cafe". Cozy atmosphere, good quality food and the best hot chocolate ever! Delicious Japanese-style linguini with clams with pasta done al dente. Other dishes we ordered were fresh and tasty too. Service is attentive. We'd be sure to come back next time we visit Shanghai.

Have been here twice and the atmosphere was aleays pleasant. I would call it an island of taste, detail, service and quality. easy going ambient, but delivering great coffe, original japanese food and more. A piece of Japan in town. One of the best nests in town.

My friends and I visited Cafe Dan for the second time, and both times, I have enjoyed this wonderful restaurant. The restaurant is certainly eclectic, with a maze of rooms and mix of furniture makes it feel like an intimate hideaway amidst the hustle and bustle of Shanghai. While the service is slow, the fresh, delicious food more than compensates. The menu offers plenty of choices, and dishes we have sampled include the pork ramen, spicy tuna with rice, udon noodles and curry beef. None were disappointing. This place is heaven for coffee lovers - I have never seen such an expansive and unique coffee selection. If you need a break from loud, noisy restaurants, check out Cafe Dan for a lovely meal in a relaxing environment.
