Great good, good ambience and traditional vibes. Set inside a temple area, this vegan place had a great variety of food you can choose from the set menu. Forget the translation and just order anything and it will be great.

This restaurant only serves shojin ryori, or vegetarian meal in the style of Japanese buddhist temples. The restaurant is inside a buddhist temple and maybe a little tricky to find. It offers 3 set menus, we chose the one with pricing in the middle. There were many courses, in different preparation styles. The waitress would introduce each meal in Japanese, without any English explanation but we didn't ask for it. It's a wonderful experience and recommended for those who haven't tried.

This restaurant is located in front of the Daitokuji Temple gate and serves "Teppatsu shojin-ryori" (vegetarian food served in an iron bowl).
"Teppatsu" is an iron bowl used by monks to receive food. Seasonal vegetarian dishes are served in the bowl and look so cute! It is rare to find iron bowl cuisine that offers the true essence of Japanese cuisine.
Yuba Kaiseki, which is not an iron bowl dish, is also delicious. No need to enter Daitokuji Temple to get this restaurant. If you do not plan to visit Daitokuji Temple, I recommend visiting this restaurant or the one in Sagano.

Lovely little spot inside the Daitokuji complex. The food and green tea they serve is excellent and feels very authentic. Avoid the 12-1pm lunch rush and go late for a quieter experience.

We had lunch here and were very impressed with the quality and the service. The food was vegetarian and the backdrop was a beautiful Japanese garden which was very tranquil and peaceful. The food served was fresh and very unique.
One word on location, the location that directs you there on google maps is
Incorrect to the point where the incorrect address owner had to put up a sign saying this was not the restaurant as I’m sure multiple people had arrived there incorrectly. It took some time to find. It’s located in the Daitokujicho temple itself. Also it’s cash only. Great food and ambiance, we’ll be back for another visit.

Beautifully presented vegetables and tofu. I wish I liked tofu. But the eggplant especially was lovely, as was the setting.

We had a fantastic lunch at Izusen. The staff were welcoming and the food was great. The experience was truly memorable. Would highly recommend to both vegetarians and non vegetarians.

We were calling around for a last minute lunch reservation, and we hit the jackpot! This Buddhist vegan restaurant is by no means fancy but it delivers. We couldn't have found it had it not been for our guide. When you hear "vegan" in the West, you generally associate it with "deprivation." Not so with this restaurant. We were treated to course after course of yummy treats that we almost forgot this was supposed to be "vegan." The bonus was that since Daitoku-ji is a collection of many different sub-temples, of which Daijiin is one, we were free to roam around the huge compound visiting the other temples' beautiful stone gardens and admiring paintings on walls and sliding doors, without being bothered by hoards of tourists that visit the other major sites literally by the bus loads.

The food here is just brilliant with tastes and textures that amaze a European like myself. Amusingly seated on the floor, served by very professional ladies, the dishes keep coming and the wonderful surprises include some made of wonderfully scented veggies. A pleasure and set in one of the great temple complexes that you should always visit in Kyoto.

Tucked in a quiet corner in the Kyoto Daitoku-ji temple complex, this restaurant is a gem. I don't profess to be a big veggie fan, but this meal was pretty epic. So much food (bowl after bowl after bowl), and all beautifully and originally presented, bursting with color and flavor. The garden setting was quite apropos for the zen cuisine too. Worth checking out if you are in the area.

The experience as a whole, along with the food was well worth it. Not a cheap meal, but sitting outside under the trees in the garden, amidst or just outside the temple with dishes continuing to arrive at your table, I couldn't ask for more.
The eggplant and ice cream were my absolute favorite, although I enjoyed every dish that was put on the table.
Even with seven main dishes coming, I was a bit nervous there would not be enough food for me as I tend to be quite a big eater. But all in all, I left feeling satisfied and not over stuffed.

Home of the famous Zen cusine right outside Daitoku-ji temple. It serves kaiseki-style multi-course lunches from around $30 to $60. The lower-end lunch is filling enough, and the tea refills are free. We walked in at around 12:30pm without a need for a reservation in high season, on a Tuesday. The food was interesting and very high quality, as expected, but the atmosphere was more like that of a diner than a Zen temple. We've had similar (albeit not entirely vegan) kaiseki meals in better surroundings in Kyoto, including Sagano.
Overall, a great lunch option for the day when you visit the Northern temples (Daitoku-ji, Kinkaku-ji and Ryōan-ji), especially for vegetarians or vegans.

Course after course of delightful vegetarian items, served in red lacquerware bowls that all ultimately nested together (15 of them) in Babushka doll style. The food was delicious. Seating accommodations were harsh on our old Western knees, and it was cold inside.

Northern Kyoto
Hot springs and historic temples characterize the leafy landscapes of Northern Kyoto. Acres of tranquil residential streets are interrupted by some of Kyoto's most gorgeous architectural gems, including the majestic Golden Pavilion of Kinkakuji, the serene artistry of the Ryoanji Temple rock gardens, and the bold red paint across the structures of Enryakuji Temple. Once a religious core of the city, the district now boasts some of its most remote and peaceful hot springs, as well as a few of its best family-run mom-and-pop restaurants. A blend of extremely local at its outskirts, and highly peopled at its tourist centers, Northern Kyoto nonetheless retains a halcyon air in harmony with nature.
