We stumbled on the Brass Monkey 4 hours before opening time. The guy at the entrance stated that they weren't open but inquired what sort of a meal it was that we were after. With no kitchen staff, it was the owner, Raj, who donned the apron and put a meal together for us. That was the start of a relationship that kept us coming back for more over the next 3 weeks. The knowledgeable and well traveled Raj, together his wonderful friendly staff, make this more than just an eating experience. The menu is varied and there is also a certain flair. Always nice to be surprised, like the Grand Marnier-mango desert that wasn't on the menu! The restaurant does not have scenic views but the decor is lovely and artistic in an unusual way. There are other regular diners that frequent the Brass Monkey too. Just before sunset a quarrel of sparrows come to visit Raj for a feed of broken rice. A South African, a Kiwi and a Scotsman walked into a restaurant..... The rest is history ..... and hopefully we get to visit again soon.

Ordered the steak and crab spaghettis. The taste was relatively good but not I think they could do better with presentation. The restaurant has a rustic feel however the service is really good. The Manager is confident to walk around speaking to the customers inquiring on their dining experience.

Food was one of the best I’ve been to. Hard to choose as it’s varied in style as the owner has many influences but the curried mutton stew was out of this world! My partners dish was equally tasty. As it was quiet we g out chanting to the owner who was a really friendly interesting character. If you’re in Kota Kinabalu this really is a must visit

When I asked the locals if they know where I could get a proper steak, they pointed me in the direction of Brass Monkey and they were right. Now everytime I'm back in KK, that's where I'd head as its now my mot favourite place to go for a steak. You can't go wrong with Brass Monkey. The owner, Rajah is also now a good friend whom I enjoy a beer of two with, every now and then. A must try when visiting KK!

Having read the reviews we looking forward to eating here, “ the best steak house in KK” so a Wagyu treat was much anticipated. Maybe it’s the anticipation that kills you in the end as our experience was underwhelming at best. Arrive was poor, we sat for 20 mins while the one waitress chatted, in the end I had to call her over which I hate ( it’s one step from clicking your fingers which should echoing offence!) Our glasses were empty before I got her attention again to take our order. Having looked forward to the Wagyu I ordered ribeye med-rare. What came back was medium and I think was sirloin, I’ll have to take them at their word it was Wagyu but it wasn’t tasty compared to Wagyu I’ve had before or indeed other steaks this trip. Nobody asked if we wanted another drink or how our food was. Had I been at home I would have complained and not paid the 10% service charge but that seems overly churlish out here. My wife had salmon which she said was ok if a bit over done and not as nice as previous places. Over all a little disappointing.

- Service is great. That's a plus point. - Ordered steak and mutton, and it was very bad, incredibly bland and disappointing. Seriously bad. They must have replaced their chef recently or somehow having someone else cooking during our visit. A bit torn in deciding to revisit or not.

What a fantastic evening we have just had with Raj and his team at Brass Monkey. The service was outstanding and the food matched it. Shame we have only got 1 night left or we would definitely be going back again. If you are looking for a good meal and great hospitality make sure you go here. Thank you so much for making our family feel so welcome. The Jones family.

Were with a Grab (local Uber) on our way to another place when driver recommended us this place. We changed directions and did not regret. Very cosy atmosphere, friendly staff and tasty food. Popular place for locals. Would definitely visit again.

Really enjoyed our evening. This is a lovely restaurant with great staff and a really friendly owner. Very quirky place with an indoor outdoor feel. Steak was just sensational and quite possibly the best we've tasted. Seafood Thermidor also delicious. The owner was extremely kind and generous. Highly recommended and well deserving of its high Tripadvisor rating. Will definitely return during our 2 week stay in KK.

We had a wonderful night celebrating a family member's birthday. Nice outdoor setting, family friendly and the owner Raj offered to make a Hawaiian pizza for my 4yo who didn't want to choose anything from the (perfectly fine) kids menu, which he really enjoyed. Steaks are air freighted from NZ/AU and prices are very reasonable compared to what we pay back home in Australia. There's a special birthday surprise too! Thanks for a great night out in KK

From the moment we arrived, we had so much fun at this wonderful restaurant. The owner, Mr Raja Sagaran - or “Raj” to his regulars, is a charming 65 year old gent from Penang with many a story to tell. The restaurant is open on two sides, so we enjoyed listening to the rain pelting down. Raj cooked my wife’s king prawns himself- having donned his special apron. We will be back for more fun tomorrow.
