Mother India, located on the ground floor of an old shopping mall, provides a cozy and comfortable setting. The restaurant offers an extensive menu of delightful Northern Indian dishes at very reasonable prices. The food is nicely presented, and the staff is attentive and courteous. My family and I thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience and are eager to return on our next visit to Kota Kinabalu.

We had made an advanced reservation as we had heard it gets busy. Upon arrival we were greeted with a warm welcome and taken to our table. The ambience is good and the decor has some very interesting artefacts.
To the menu, large choice of dishes, spoilt for choice, so we opted for our favourites. Onion Bhaji, Samosa, Chicken Saag, Lamb Rogan Josh, Briyani Rice and Garlic Naan. As we did not know the portion sizes, the very helpful restaurant manager guided us so that we were not ordering to much and wasting food. When it came, served promptly I may add, it was absolutely delicious. I can say it is one of the best authentic Indian meals I have had, and I’ve had a lot. I would highly recommend anyone visiting Sabah, and Kota Kinabalu to venture there and enjoy.

Fantastic cozy and nice restaurant. The food was perfect. The 4 of us took in different dishes and shared to taste as much as possible. For the food we brought in rice and a basket with different nan bread to slim on. My favorite was Daal.

We stayed in KK for two nights and ate here both times, the food is excellent- as good as any Indian food I’ve had in India and worldwide, it is very clean, the staff are friendly and attentive, you can see the chefs cooking fresh to order. There are Lots of options- 2 pages of vegetarian, and most can be made vegan, even naans- we really appreciated the understanding and catering to of our diet, thank you! And would recommend to anyone

Really an exquisite lunch. Clean and tidy place, run by Indians. We ordered a butter chicken, a chicken tandoori, a baighan barta and a basket of naan mix. We didn't get a dish that wasn't delicious. The chicken tender in both preparations. Well balanced flavors. The quality feels sharp.

After reading positive good reviews we decided to visit this restaurant. We were not very impressed with our main courses of Chicken Rogan Josh and Chicken Curry. Whilst eating mine , I crunched into a piece of sharp bone and this always puts me clean off my meal. My wifes had several pieces of what I would call " grizzly chicken" basically not good quality. The staff were informed of this and just basically said it is what it is. We had onion bhaji to start with which was good, but we didnt get any pakora sauce or anything else, which after we asked for, it was given. Price was very good, but we will not go back as we prefer better quality food and service, oh and the only beer you could get was a bottle of Heineken, no Tiger or Kingfisher etc available.

Hi Gary. Thanks for your review and apologies that you were disappointed. We have taken note of your points , however our chicken is delivered to us daily and its fresh. We don't use frozen foods for anything. The chicken dishes you mentioned are boneless and should not have had a bone in it, so very sorry for this . However, you could have asked for it to be changed. Usually we do not have any special sauce that goes with the onion bhaji because here most folks enjoy it with our complimentary fresh mint sauce.

Incredible Indian food!! Best in KK for sure! After spending alot of time in India, we can say this is the real deal. They also accommodated wheat allergies and vegan/dairy allergies. The dal tarka is excellent, and the Chana masala superb! The baigan was great and okra and pani puri good as well. And veg pulao. Great salty lime sodas as well. Great people, and possibly the best view in kk with one of the only areas you can see the boardwalk and sunset!

This was our second meal at Mother India, and it was equally as delicious as the first. It is obvious that the food is prepared with great care and skill. The spice blends are perfectly balanced and the curries, dahls, biryanis and parathas all have their distinct regional flavours. I think we could honestly say that Mother India has raised the bar on northern Indian food for us. It will be hard to beat their memorable meals and we may have to come back to Borneo to satisfy our cravings for the best of the best. Thank you for this wonderful gastronomic treat!

This is an amazing place to eat in KK. The menu is varied. Good for meat eaters and vegetarians. The breads are exceptional. They manage to combine some western interpretations of Indian cuisine with very traditional flavours and style. We met the proprietor who was delightful and shared lots of local knowledge with us. The service is excellent. The decor and ambience is lovely. Probably the best Indian meal we have had out.

The food was amazing! Best Indian food I have ever eaten! Had a great evening here with family. Butter paneer was so delicious the section of rice was great we had the peas pilau and a sweet one both sooo good! You won’t be disappointed here.

Visited based on TA reviews We were not disappointed. We were promptly and friendly seated and offered drinks. The menu is large but easily followed. Vegetarians are also well catered for. We chose Prawn Curry. Chicken Tika masala and a Vegetable Curry. A bowel of assorted Nan breads and a couple of Tiger Beers to wash it down. All the fuses were nicely spiced and you could taste the meat/ vegetables. They were served hot and remains at a good temperature throughout. The Nan Bread was delicious. Overall a great meal at a reasonable price. We will return soon.

Absolutely brilliant. Amazing tasty dishes, just large portions on the starters so think about what you’re ordering if you don’t have a large appetite. Professional efficient staff who are friendly and attentive.

This restaurant is rated number one in KK and deservedly so. As a group of four we had a range of food, including vegetarian options. We thoroughly enjoyed butter chicken, chicken jalfrezi (not hot but very tasty), chana masala and the garlic cheese nan was smothered in garlic (yummy). The restaurant manager looked after us well. Excellent value for money. Definitely recommend!
