The China Bear bar sits sits opposite the water in Mui Wo, just by the ferry terminal. This makes it an awfully convenient place to have a last drink before catching the ferry back and heading back home to Central. After a day of hiking...and on the sand, it is a good spot to spend the time before your ferry pulls in. There is seating inside in the bar but the best tables are outside on the pavement. They were all taken so we took our drinks and sat along the sea wall, hanging our legs over the edge and looked out at the South China Sea, towards Hong Kong Kong island. A very pleasant way to wait for our ferry in the late afternoon. Note – happy hour is on weekdays between 5-9pm.More
Food wait was long but the place was busy. Great steaks , sides and service. Definitely best dining in mui wo. Seaside tables, as busy as can get. Highly recommend.
I recently went to the China Bear following a lengthy hike on Lantau. Let me say that I have visited the establishment many times over the years. My comments are NOT a criticism of the food, prices or service, which are the normal criticisms directed...at a restaurant / bar. I did not eat - only having a few Heinekens after the hike. When I entered, I saw a blackboard at the entrance displaying the usual cautionary messages regarding Covid; wear mask, use sanitiser, keep distance, all good stuff. I sat inside the very empty bar. When I came to leave, I requested (and was presented with) the bill. To my surprise it came with a note stating that only cash or Amex card was acceptable. No other credit card could be used. I remonstrated with (first) the waitress then a rather aggressive Filipino - after I requested she fetch the manager. My attention was directed, by both of them, to the small print at the bottom of the menu. But considering that I had not eaten there, I had never seen a menu! Eventually I went to 7-11 nearby and was able to get a “cash back.” My point is, is it beyond the wit of man to display a prominent notification that only cash is accepted here? (Who actually has an Amex card? Nobody I know). Why not tell the staff to inform customers when they sit down? Why not write something to that effect on the aforementioned blackboard at the entrance? Most other establishments which only accept cash prominently display something to that effect. Why not this place?More
Had a chill out lunch here on a weekday, was quite enjoyable. Look out for the daily specials which are quite nice, food is surprisingly good
My original plan was lunching at Central at some Chinese stall, but both the places I wanted to go were closed (it was a Saturday that day), so I was pretty annoyed and randomly went to Mui Wo. After getting off the ferry, I felt...that Mui Wo was such a lovely place, there are some similarities to Sai Kung, but this place is a million times better. The sea was clear, there were no boats clotting the view or stinky boat fuel lingering in the air, the air was FRESH! The vibes at this place was amazing, there were so many expats and Western restaurants near the pier. There was a good bakery shop nearby too. I was hoping to see some cows, but there were none that day. Anyway, this was my first stop for food!!!! I saw the words CHICKEN TERRINE and I just had to have it! Sat down, and the view was wonderful, just sea and hills in front of me surrounded by expats. ★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★ Potato and leek soup: The soup was ok, nothing memorable. It was the usual thick and starchy soup. ★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★ Chicken Terrine: As expected the chicken terrine was delicious, it was grounded chicken, herbs and some flour mixed in. It reminded me of Christmas stuffing, anyway, the terrine was delicious with the gravy and sweet peas. I ate the carrots which I do not normally eat as they made them tasty. ★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★More
Our food was brought suspiciously quickly so we weren’t expecting it to be so delicious! My two friends who ordered bangers and mash were very happy and my skewered kebab was wonderful too! Great beer selection as well. Slight mid-step with the Viet summer rolls...starter and my girlfriend’s slightly bland pizza but overall still very good food, and with a lovely view and atmosphere to top things off.More
This is a pub/restaurant and is on the Mui Wo waterfront, near the ferry terminal. Not too large, usually fairly busy with inside and outside seating. The staff were good, friendly and efficient. We had Butter Chicken Curry with Rice and All Day Breakfast, both...of which were enjoyed by us not quite finished up as they were very large helpings!! They seem to have several regulars customers and the place has a good atmosphere. We went a couple of times in our short stay and enjoyed our visits.More
I say 'best watering hole' as it seems to be the place people congregate. The staff are wonderful, the prices however (outside of Happy Hour) are on the steep side given it's Mui Wo. Decent menu - I had the Beef in Guinness Pie which...was divine and very fairly priced. It's very easy to spend more on drink than food in this place. A lunch for one set me back $250 (60% of which was for two pints)More
The China Bear is always a welcome sight for me as I wind my way down the hill from Discovery Bay to Mui Wo (Silvermine Bay). It’s a gruelling walk, but I do it every time I visit Hong Kong to test my endurance. The...China Bear on the ferry pier is a great place to cool down & enjoy a cold glass of wine & lunch or dinner - not to mention the view! The food is consistently good & the team is friendly & fun. Even if you’re not doing the walk from DB, catch the ferry across from Central & enjoy the afternoon exploring, eating & drinking at the China Bear. 👍More
Happened by this place while wondering around and decided to stop in. It had great beer and very friendly staff. Also awesome atmosphere. It is right on the water and there is outside seating and the whole place is open outside.
We had satay chicken and seared tuna salad. Both were great, presented well and good portions. Nice spot for a drink looking over the sea. Attentive service.
Very friendly staff here and accommodating. I had the pizza vegetarian which was lovely and skinny. The first night we were there we sat outside and people watched and enjoyed the water view. You can enjoy a smoke on the benches outside but not actually...inside the premises. The 2nd night we were there it was cold so they put a cover on the front but still a tad chilly but sort of unavoidable really. A must visit on your trip to Mui Wo.More
Anyone who knows Hong Kong knows that finding a place to escape the stress of this city can be very difficult. The China Bear Pub is such a place. Directly at Mui Wo Ferry Pier, 30 minutes by ferry from Central. Quiet and relaxed, that's...what you'll find here, with great staff, cold beer and good food, central although on the horizon vissible is suddenly very far away :) It is like that song "sitting at a dock of a bay wasting time..."More
The location is great, next to Mui Wo Ferry pier, its perfect for sitting by the sea and watching the boats pass by and look out towards Hong Kong. The beer choice is limited and they really should offer a better selection. The food is...not great, very stodgy and needs a revamp so don't bother.More
