About
MICHELIN Bib Gourmand: Good quality, good value cooking
An iconic landmark of Wan Chai since 1976, Sang Kee has moved shop. The room is brighter, more spacious and offers more seating. But rest assured: the menu hasn’t changed and the food is as good as ever. Despite the lack of fancy plating and luxury ingredients, you’ll find yourself craving their salt-baked chicken, pork liver and wolfberry leaves blanched in stock, and baked fish intestine with egg long after you’ve gone home.

Sang Kee is a traditional Cantonese restaurant in Wanchai. Tucked away in an unremarkable building, it serves no-frills, old-fashioned local classics. This is the place to sample the old Cantonese flavor, which is becoming elusive in Hong Kong. Pomelo peel, with a rich sauce, is flavorful. Mud carp, an all-time favorite from the Shunde region, is savory. Portion is pretty generous. Service, however, is quite slow. The restaurant is crowded even in weekdays so reservation is essential. Interior is noisy and crowded. Price is on the upper end.

We have stopped coming here for years as the previous experience was not impressive. We are pleased that we did went back after 8 years and very happy with both the foods and the services. We ordered very typical nostalgia dishes and all cooked nicely. Now we can't wait to go back again for more!

Other than the food is nano GOOD, the service in this place is horrible. The middle part of the pork liver is cold in this dish of thick pork liver slice stir fry with ginger & scallion. When you tell the waiter & waitress, they ignore us. The Gaelic steam fish head had way too much garlic & the fish head pieces tasted a little bitter due ti too much garlic. It is a very disappointing experience in this place.

I made reservation and asked if they have salt baked chicken, They said yes, I asked to reserve one for me. When arrived, the manager (white hair) told me, the salt baked chicken has been all sold. Since I came from overseas and made and confirmed by them , a dish I like, the baked salt chicken. I told the manager that as a Michelin Star restaurant, you must have the honor and honesty to keep your word. So I started to leave. He came back and said there will be half a chicken for you. Never apologized nor eexplain why. I stayed and finished my dinner. However, a day later I reflected on such experience and come to the conclusion that the manager(white hair) sold my promised and booked chicken to his friends and tried to push me to accept something else instead. The checken was not cheap. My conclusion is that there was dishonesty and friends over ruled over tourist. Dishonesty destroy my desire to visit them ever again. In addition, the manager has damaged the reputation of Michelin Star. having a Michelin Star means a lot for overseas tourist like me. It means honesty, keeping promises, good service and good food. Most of all is honesty. Without it, I will not visit and dine there. I made reservation and asked if they have salt baked chicken, They said yes, I asked to reserve one for me. In addition, I believe that Michelin Star reputation indirectly also suffered. Having a Michelin Star means a lot for overseas tourist like me. It means honesty, keeping promises, good service and good food. Most of all is honesty. Without it, such restaurant should not deserve having one. Else why should I trust Michelin?

The restaurant is not visible from street level. The entrance is from an old commercial building to walk one level up. The restaurant looks run down and old style of decoration. It does not look attractive or makeyou have temptation to try. However, the cantonese style dishes for lunch set of four were delicious. The dishes were not big in size but good for 4 adults. No wonder the restaurant won Michelin awards for some many years. Hidden gem.

"We don't have chicken....Nor ginger......Nor cashew nuts.....nor mixed vegetables. " Apparently because Chinese new year was a week and a half ago. Steamed fish? Yes, we have that, at a seasonal price of $1000 , yes, one thousand! Eventually we (a party of four) went for a mixture of what they did have, which was very average, certainly nothing special - our local takeaway in UK wouId genuinely be better. As for the place itself, very underwhelming, down-market decor, with entry via a street-level dingy corridor to the upstairs 'restaurant'. Very abrupt staff, almost to the point of being rude, finding it funny that many of the fairly run of the mill items were unavailable. Probably one of the worst Chinese restaurants I've ever been to, and this is my fourth time in HK. I can't understand how it's got so meant good reviews. ...Let's see if this one gets published.

Bring alllllll of your friends. Feed them. The thing about Sang Kee is this is homely, hearty Cantonese food. Big portions made for sharing. I go so much I don't even look at the menu anymore. Cantonese food is not just about dim sum. Come here and get PROPER and i say PROPER sweet and sour pork. The food comes out quickly and is usually very well executed. The consistency astounds me still after all these years. Please stop missing out and go!

One of my favourite Chinese traditional restaurant in Hong Kong. The food is awesome. Both are up to my expectation and standard. Especially recommend their “Baked Chicken with Salt”, “Sweet and Sour Pork”,”Congee with Fish”. The waiters are also nice and helpful which help us with food selection on menu. We definitely will re-visit again. Highly recommend.

Absolutely top rated Canto favorite in Wanchai. Go to 2nd floor and see if you can recognize the local film stars and tycoons who regularly dine here. Bring your fine wines & scotch - everyone else does & ask the experienced wait staff their recommendations to go with your wine, Very reasonable for world class Cantonese,

it is famous for offering traditional cantonese cuisine, like muddy fish porridge ( 泥鯭粥)- congee made with a fish called 泥鯭魚 which is easily found in hk. the fish is small in size and tastes very sweet. another dish is pomelo peel with some shrimp seed. the dish requires a long time to prepare. if u r a fan of traditional cantonese cuisine, u wont be disappointed.

Sang Kee has a local reputation for excellent Cantonese cuisine if you don’t mind the crowdedness and noise. The restaurant keeps it standards all through the years. The most famous dishes are the salt baked chicken, stuffed peppers, garlic salt fried squid, poached pig kidney and liver, congee with meat ball and fish. Prices are reasonable. In the evening the restaurant has two seatings which makes eating a hasty affair. The best time to go is lunch on Saturdays when the restaurant is not busy.

Despite the simple decor and furniture, the food was excellent. The steamed fish was fresh and delicately flavoured, and their specialities (ask the waiters) were very good. Do not go if you are expecting a sophisticated dining experience, but the waiters were friendly and the price rather reasonable for the quality of the food. In HK, one tends to find over priced restaurants.

How fantastic to get real authentic Chinese cuisine In a really busy 1st floor restaurant in Wan Chai. Book early, we knew someone or we would never have got a table!

Wan Chai / Causeway Bay
Wan Chai and Causeway Bay are the retail centres of Hong Kong Island. Filled with shops, malls and restaurants, both areas are bustling with people – tourists and locals alike. Causeway Bay has one of the highest rents on the planet, and is a bit more polished and modern than its Wan Chai counterpart. Beneath the surface there is more than meets the eye – find boutique stores in the above ground floors of buildings and wander into side streets to find interesting restaurants and shops tucked away from the main roads. Wan Chai especially has experienced a modern revival in recent times, with an influx of trendy restaurants and bars around the Star Street area. In addition, both areas contain many of Hong Kong’s iconic tourist attractions worthy of your visit.
