This has a nice, neighbourhood café feel about it. We came here for a weekend breakfast and it was certainly popular.
FOOD: They do an all-day breakfast menu, with large servings. The menu features the sort of familiar café brunch items that you’d expect to...see such as eggs benedict, omelettes, frittata. Great brunch comfort food.
We had Croques Monsieur and a burger. They really don't skimp on servings and the Croques Monsieur was enormous, with three slices of thick sourdough bread and a good amount of ham. Unless you were very hungry, two could easily share it. I’m not sure that I would order it again though because there was too much heavy Bechamel sauce and halfway through, the bread became rather soggy.
The burger was equally filling. The New Zealand lamb was tender and there was a nice combination of flavours, with mushrooms, a rosemary brioche bun and a minty yoghurt sauce on the side.
I thought the prices were very fair for Hong Kong. Most dishes were around $95-$128 HKD which is very reasonable.
SETTING: The décor is charming in an unpretentious, make-yourself-at-home sort of way. Most of the seating is inside - a mix of tables and comfy low lounges with cushions. Magazines and bookshelves line the walls and I could spot a number of familiar titles. There is a smaller outdoor area out the back with trestle style tables.
NOTE: Much as I liked this place, it was disappointing in these cover times, that some tables were not spaced far enough apart. This left some people sitting right alongside the person at the next table. This was disappointing but it was the only negative for me.
GETTING THERE: From the escalator it is much easier to get off at Caine Rd. Peel St is very steep so from Caine Rd, you get to walk downhill to the café, and avoid a very steep uphill trek.More
