We wanted a light lunch and the corn chowder bisque and a house salad was perfect. Close to ISU campus.

Went here 3 weeks ago and had some pretty good food. The Cafe does a fairly good job of trying out new foods. The only thing I can't figure out is why their coffee is so bitter and burnt tasting. It's been that way for...years, and I only brought it up with a server once. I must admit that her defense of the coffee reminded me of "The Emperor's New Clothes" folktale. So, I'm guessing that the smallish lie about the coffee doesn't bother customers. And I love their baked goods, so maybe they could turn a blind eye my way when I bring in coffee from...Wheatsfield, Caribou, or any place but Staahbucks. If the cafe wants good coffee, why not buy a good organic French roast and serve it in French presses? Of course, that would make folk linger, but hey, only offer the pots from 9-11 am.More
Visited for a business lunch with a diverse group of people, the Cafe has good options for vegetarians and meat eaters alike. Relaxed atmosphere for lunch.
Our party of three went there this evening.. service and server were excellent.. ambience is great but I was disappointed with the food, sadly. My spouse had the salmon Ruben and loved it…. but I had the cafe burger and our son had the veggie...burger. veggie burger was dry..my burger was lukewarm and absent any truffle aioli and the bun was cold and dry ,,. The pickled onions were good and a large slice of tomato and a nice piece of lettuce. The burger was .. just tasteless. The slice of cheese was there but didn’t taste like anything. the house potato chips were overcooked . I will try again but I hope they up their game as $15 for a burger and potato chips in Iowa merits a higher level of taste.More
Cafe is a wonderful combination of excellent food, a very comfortable atmosphere and great service. The place makes you feel so welcome, you will want to visit often. We were there for breakfast and enjoyed the original and totally homemade offerings. We will definitely return...next time we are in town.More
Not too fancy but supremely tasty innovative meals to please all palates - from soup to dessert a real winner in every category with prices that won't bust the budget
I used the waitlist service from the website and we were able to walk right in and be seated. We had 3 adults and 2 kids so they gave us a large table at the back and it was perfect. Wait staff was friendly and...helpful, food was delicious. A unique menu blended favorites like mac and cheese and a burger while I had Thai chicken meatballs. We'd definitely go againMore
Some of the best food in Ames! Great, relaxing atmosphere and excellent customer service. The food was fabulous, and make sure you save room for dessert! A must stop if you’re in the area.
We met here for breakfast. Service was good, coffee was outstanding, breakfast was generous and served quickly. Really a great experience.
Great breakfast and Brunch. Loved being able to get on the wait list. Great concept. Much better than waiting outside.
Coming to The Café, it certainly was not what I expected when I saw the name. Rather than being a small relaxing coffeeshop environment, it was a full sit down restaurant style. That didn't change a thing about the quality however. Every part of the...Korean Steak n' Eggs I ordered was perfect and packed with flavor. Be aware there is no Wi-Fi.More
I ordered the broccoli cheese soup and was very unhappy with the taste. The waitress suggested that she trade it for the tomato soup. This was so salty and no favor. I would personal not recommend getting either of the soups listed on the menu.
What in the world happened here? Nothing all that appealing currently on the menu. We used to love this place. Decided to go in anyway and just get burgers. It was dead -- hardly any customers (which is also unlike every other time we have...been there). It was Sunday night in the height of dinner service. No waitlist! But we said we need a table for 5. Hostess said that they cannot accommodate a party of that size. I said okay how about 4 and a high chair. She looked and said she couldn't make it work. That tells me they didn't want our business. Went to Brick City Grill next door which is what my husband really wanted anyway. Had the most delicious meal we have ever had at Brick City Grill and adult entrees were half the price of The Cafe. The kids entrees were even better than The Cafe. We'll be returning to Brick City Grill. In all fairness, Brick City Grill was not filled to capacity either but they were much busier than The Cafe and especially popular among parties of 5+.More
This used to be my favorite place in Iowa but something has happened. My favorites are gone and the choices left are not that compelling, especially considering the prices. This started happening before the lock downs but it has plummeted since opening up. I do...appreciate those who work hard though. I have noticed a decided lack of customers too so I don't think that it's just me.More
It took quite a while before our server arrived. We ordered an appetizer, and the server wanted our entree order at the same time. It took quite a while to get our drinks. The appetizer, a calamari dish, was delicious and beautifully plated. When the...server came to check on the app., she again asked for our entree order. I would expect her to hold off placing the order till we had time to finish the appetizer, but that wasn’t the case. The entrees came before we were ready, and had to sit beside us on the table getting cold. Once again, the plating was lovely , the food was delicious, but not as warm as it should have been. If we’re spending that kind of money on a meal, we expect service better than a chain restaurant. When we finished our entrees, we had to sit and wait for her to finally show up with the bill. She was friendly but gave borderline poor service. Would I go back? No. The service ruined what could have been a very nice experience.More
