We stopped here for a late lunch on the advice of a friend. At 2PM on a Thursday, it was really quiet and our pizza was up quickly (Denver style crust with pepperoni). The whole wheat crust is different, but approach with an open mind....At least we know where to eat when we come back to town.More

We are pizza lovers and always look for the non chain places when we travel. Great Plains you can order available by the slice or choose from several crust options. We chose the Denver crust Prairie pizza. Pepperoni sausage onion and peppers. We added mushrooms....The Denver crust is thick which I’m usually not a huge fan as I want the crunch. I got both! You could actually hear the crunch when you took a bite. Tons a cheese on this too! There was honey on the table. Highly recommend dipping your crust in honey!More

All I can say is that Great Plains Sauce & Dough Pizza is some of the best pie we've had. EVAH. Been here a few times, but first time for a review. As with many of my reviews, I try to pick something about our...dish that sets it aside from similar entre at any other (pizza) restaurant in town. In this case, it's the crust. Great Plains offers a variety of styles, and we like the "Denver" medium with 3 toppings, Canadian Bacon, Sausage, Pepperoni. (picture) Yep, we took half of it home for supper tomorrow. Here's where I knock 1, maybe 1.5 stars off my overall rating for Great Plains. THE RESTROOMS. They're down one flight on narrow stairs, then left turn to the 2 rooms. The restrooms themselves were clean, but I felt bad for this guy who looked to be in his late 70's who was walking up the steps as I got up from my booth. He was with his wife, who was helping him, and I wished I'd seen him go DOWN the steps so I could have helped him come back up. Now, I realize this is an old building and pbly little or no room for renovation. But what ya think Great Plains?More

We ordered pizza for delivery from Great plains on a recent visit to Ames and it was very good. My husband is picky about pizza, especially the cheese to sauce ratio and this one had the right ratio for him. I was also please to...see that they had whole wheat crust, which is unusual for a pizza place. It was very good.More

Denver Crust, any toppings, honey for the crust. The best pizza there is. We usually call ahead and order to help skip the line. We eat in, or carry out. This is big pizza. A medium crust and lots of cheese. A large will feed...four, with drinks. During the lunch hour they also have a few choices of just ordering by the slice, which I recommend if you are just doing lunch, but your choices will be limited to what they have already prepared.More

Wife wanted thick crust pizza, so decided to give this place a try. Ordered pickup was told 45 minutes. After I got there, I had to wait in line for 10 minutes to pick up my pizza which was cooked some time ago, but still...warm. My main complaint was that it just tasted bland, no spices, just tomato sauce and dough. Very filling but did not taste good at all. Price was $15 for small two topping pizza. Will not be recommending this place.More

Great Plains has been around forever and there is a reason why, it's delicious. It's a staple in Ames but it's not huge so plan to have a small wait or get take out/delivery. Our favorite is the Buffalo pizza on the Denver crust but...we always order extra sauce. Our only complaint is there is not enough sauce for our liking but we just order extra and it is perfect! Don't forget to dip your thick crust in honey for an extra treat when you are finished. If you are ordering take out or delivery, I recommend your own honey because the to go packets of honey are not that good. In the restaurant it is fine.More

Same great pizza. There is dine-in with every other table blocked off. And if you want carry out they’ll bring it out to the front door for you.

When you're in Ames, and you want pizza, you must try Great Plains Sauce and Dough. The Denver crust is a thick wheat bread crust. Bottles of honey are provided so after you are finished with your pizza you can eat every last delicious crumb...of the crust! Another winning point is the cheese- lots of delicious mozzarella. If you don’t want the big Denver crust there’s also a thin version. Just as delicious. There is a reason this place has been around since 1979!More

I've lived in the Ames area for 40 years, and Great Plains is not only my favorite pizza place in this college town, it has outlasted many competitors and has been voted "Ames' Best Pizza" on numerous occasions. To do that in a town where...college students thrive on cheap, fast-delivery pizza tells you a lot. I strongly recommend the wheat crust pizza, and be sure to ask for packets of honey to go with it if you get your pizza to go. The wheat is available in thick or thin crust, and I find myself torn on which version to offer. If I want fewer carbs, I go thin. If I don't care, I go thick (and I feel thick the next day!). Great Plains does NOT skimp on the cheese. Expect it to be a fantastic, stretchy, and deep layer of cheese. I caution you that lurking underneath the cheese is a delicious sauce that will be piping hot, especially up close to the outside edge of the crust. Take care to not burn your taste buds in your first few bites, as you'll want to savor the toppings, cheese, and crust with a little dab of honey. (I even like a few drops of honey on top of the cheesy part, not just on the crust.) Beer and soft drinks are available if you dine in. Expect the restaurant to be full at its peak times--remember, it's Ames' best pizza, so people flock to the place--and you may have to wait for a table while your pizza bakes. If you are in a pinch for seating, you may find it helpful to know that a couple Ames bars just down the street in either direction will let you bring Great Plains pizza in. You can also opt to stop at a bar, phone in your pizza order to go, and carry it back. Sorry I cannot name names of what places allow you to bring food in, as this review is not about them.More

Whether ordering from menu or creating your own, their pizza is so good! A friend got us hooked on the Hawaiian, adding sauerkraut. We call for delivery of this flavor often, and it arrives hot, and delicious. They deliver!

in town for a college visit and friend suggested we go here. It was good, portions are decent size. Pizza was good, but wish I did not get the thick crust. A little too much dough for me, but that is what thick crust is....You order, then seat yourself and they call your name to pick up the pizza.More

Great Plains Sauce & Dough is a long-time pizza tradition in Ames! You can either choose thin-crust or "Chicago-style" deep dish pizza-you can't go wrong w/ either. You can also choose from a variety of toppings. 1st-time diners will see "Great Plains veterans" also taking...a jar of honey to their tables-just trust them as you'll use this on your crust after the pizza toppings are done for an added treat! Great Plains Sauce & Dough is also open for a lunch-not sure of the hours-with a special of the day. Take a chance-you won't be sorry!More

After volunteer work all day was treated to a quiet time eating some of the best pizza in Ames. We really enjoyed the three toppings on whole grain thin crust.
