I've lived in the Ames area for 40 years, and Great Plains is not only my favorite pizza place in this college town, it has outlasted many competitors and has been voted "Ames' Best Pizza" on numerous occasions. To do that in a town where...college students thrive on cheap, fast-delivery pizza tells you a lot.
I strongly recommend the wheat crust pizza, and be sure to ask for packets of honey to go with it if you get your pizza to go. The wheat is available in thick or thin crust, and I find myself torn on which version to offer. If I want fewer carbs, I go thin. If I don't care, I go thick (and I feel thick the next day!).
Great Plains does NOT skimp on the cheese. Expect it to be a fantastic, stretchy, and deep layer of cheese. I caution you that lurking underneath the cheese is a delicious sauce that will be piping hot, especially up close to the outside edge of the crust. Take care to not burn your taste buds in your first few bites, as you'll want to savor the toppings, cheese, and crust with a little dab of honey. (I even like a few drops of honey on top of the cheesy part, not just on the crust.)
Beer and soft drinks are available if you dine in. Expect the restaurant to be full at its peak times--remember, it's Ames' best pizza, so people flock to the place--and you may have to wait for a table while your pizza bakes.
If you are in a pinch for seating, you may find it helpful to know that a couple Ames bars just down the street in either direction will let you bring Great Plains pizza in. You can also opt to stop at a bar, phone in your pizza order to go, and carry it back. Sorry I cannot name names of what places allow you to bring food in, as this review is not about them.More
