If you want to experience the "feel" and "buzz" of Washington, this is the place at lunchtime. Dinner time is definitely filled with tourists, but what would you expect from a restaurant situated so close to the White House and the National Mall. The food...More

This is a bustling Washington institution which has been housed in various locations near the White House but claims to date to 1856. We booked dinner on a weekday night in November, so it wasn’t too difficult to get a reservation and sit in the...More

The Old Ebbitt Grill is a stone's throw away from the White House and The Willard Hotel. It has a nice ambience and feels like "Washington": A bit pretentious, but not a total commitment to it. The food follows this line. It will fill an...More

Back to DC, and this is my go-to lunch place. I have learned my lesson. Sometimes, between the Washington lunch regulars and the tourists, it is almost impossible to get in during peak hours. Get a reservation. It's worth it.

I used to go to Old Ebbitt Grill back in my college days almost 30 years ago. Back then it was an authentic Washington institution, where it would not be unusual to see well known law makers out to dinner together. I went back there...More

WOW! Old Ebbitt Grill. After being in the city for decades, Saturday night was my first time visiting this well-established restaurant. The four of us (my beau, his cousin, my dear girlfriend and myself) had a great time. At 11:30 at night, the place is...More

Great atmosphere, food was excellent. It was very crowded though, but not a terrible wait. Had the crab cakes upon recommendation, they were very good.

Sat at the bar and made instant friends. Bar tender recommended crab cakes and I was reluctant because I am very particular about crab cakes. They can’t be fishy or mad3 with too much bread and too little meat. These were the best outside of...More

I found the lighting to be great. Definitely not bright. Yes, there was valet parking and jeans were acceptable. We were there early evening on a Saturday.

I am sorry for the delay. The lighting is very subdued. There were no flashing lights and the bar area is dim. The dining area is well lit but not "bright white".

The restaurant's decor is comprised of a Beaux-Arts facade, mahogany and velvet booths, and bars set in marble, brass, and beveled glass. Old Ebbitt serves a diverse selection of food including steaks, seafood, pasta, sandwiches, and also features an Oyster Bar with oysters form both coasts. Open early for breakfast and weekend brunch, and serving lunch, dinner and a late-night menu. Private and semi-private dining rooms including a rooftop overlooking the monuments and The White House.
