A daughter arranged a takeout meal for us from Maydan. We like middle eastern cuisine, cook some ourselves (Thank you, Claudia Roden), so while we didn't know this restaurant, dinner seemed a safe bet. We certainly thought we knew what to expect.
Not really! We...had several lamb and vegetable and lamb dishes, and a number of spreads and dips. I wasn't familiar with any of them. The meat just fell off of a leg of lamb, another dish was infused with wonderful seasonings not known to me. A mint sauce was exquisite, a goat's milk yogurt sauce was just perfect with the lamb as well. Eggplant and roasted cauliflower as I have not had them, and terrific.
I began thinking that we were eating some kind of "fusion" food, something borrowed from but not really much like true middle eastern dishes. Not that the possibility detracted from our pleasure, but it was a theory.
No, our son, fluent in Arabic and who lived and studied in Lebanon, Oman and Jordon was with us, and reported that the dishes we were enjoying were the same as, or much like, food with which he was familiar.
So, it's interesting that as many middle eastern restaurants as we have visited, the food from Maydan was different, I would say adventuresome, and wonderful.
Also, have to say at this time of Covid-19, it traveled home very well.
And from looking around as we picked up the food, I'd say this restaurant is as thoughtfully and carefully set up for serving at this time as any I've looked at.More
