We went here for my wife’s birthday on a Saturday night. I walked in at 19:30 and asked for a table in an hour and they said that would be fine. It is very small and not many tables so worth pre-booking. For starter we had seafood soup and lamb soup, both were delicious, we had a fish and lamb main too and they were expertly presented and cooked. The staff were very friendly and service was great. We had a nice bottle of Malbec for £45. Altogether for 4 starters, 4 mains and drinks was £225. I thought the price was fine as everything was perfect and for the quality of food would easily have paid over £150 in England for an equivalent meal.

Old Iceland looked interesting during a recent stay in Reykjavik, so we gave it a shot – we’re glad we did. We enjoyed it so much we went for dinner a second night during the trip. Seems to be family run and the staff is super friendly. Take their advice on specials and what to order if you have questions.
Place is often busy but worth the wait. We ate there on weeknights in January so didn’t make reservations. First time there was a 45-minute wait, so we headed down to Brew Dog for a beer or two until our table was ready.
I had the cured salmon with pickled cucumber, dill mayo, rye bread crumbles, and smoked trout roe. All were excellent. Though no fresh fish should ever be, if you’re put off by salmon and roe on concerns of fishiness or excess saltiness, give this a try anyway. You’ll be pleasantly surprised at the lack of either. I had the creamy shellfish soup (chunks of fish, white wine and dill oil) as a main course – it was fantastic on a cold evening; big bowl with loads of fish and the broth had so much flavor. Other family tried the cod special, which was light, flaky and delicious as well. Cod gets a bad rap in the US since it’s often used as a generic white fish and can be subpar quality-wise. Try it here. It’ll completely change your mind. You’ve never known it can have such flavor.
There’s a few beer and plenty of drink options if you want as well. Both Mom’s rhubarb cake and the old fashioned kleinur with rhubarb curd were excellent as well. Glad we had a walk back to our hotel because we were stuffed both nights.
Can’t say enough good things about Old Iceland, which is something considering we had a lot of great meals on the trip, but O/I was a magic combination of great food, service in a warm and inviting atmosphere that brings you back. We’ll certainly stop in there on every future trip to Reykjavik.

This place is what we would call a ‘proper restaurant’ (it isn't one of the many places that just offer 'average'). The vibe is warm, welcoming, friendly, homely, cozy and relaxing and the waiting staff were all professional, efficient, knowledgeable about the product they were offering and friendly, pleasant and cheerful …they know exactly what they are doing – something we all hope for in a restaurant but is so often lacking. Well done to the staff and management.
For starters we chose the shellfish soup with dill oil (I think I need to move to Iceland!) and the scallops with hazelnuts – both were delicious and set the tone for the rest of the meal. For our main course we had the lamb and the beef dishes and, again, both were divine – perfectly cooked and beautifully presented. This was a birthday meal so we did manage to squeeze in a dessert. The menu has been well thought through and constructed – the dishes are not just meat or fish and vegetables plonked on a plate with a sauce, they have used imagination and creativity to come up with dishes that show a good deal of finesse. We thought that the portion sizes were just right and, for the style of the dishes and quality of the ingredients and cooking, that the pricing represented good value.
This place has a system where you can’t pre-book a table beyond 6pm – after this time they only accept walk-in customers so, if you want to eat a little later, you might have to wait a while. We were walk-in customers and a member of staff took our name and advised that a table would be available in 30 minutes so we went for a wander around the local streets but there are a number of bars nearby if you prefer.
From the previous reviews that I had read I had very high expectations and Old Iceland Restaurant really delivered. Thanks to all. We highly recommend this restaurant to others.

Not surprised many bad reviews and surprised any good ones.
We walked here to reserve a table at 19.15 and told we could have one half an hour later. That is the only way to get a table it seems.
Returned at 19.45 and given a table quite close to the door. After we sat down, we were given no menu. Other people were seated after us and they were given menus, but we were ignored. We got our menus and wanted to know the special of the day, as had not been told. We tried to get attention of the waiter, but he didn't come to us, but attended to the more recently arrived customers- so that is the only way we found the Special of the Day- as we overheard them being told what it was. The people at that table asked for more time to choose, and we managed to get our order in,, over half an hour after arriving and only because they wanted more time.
My husband chose the 3 course meal with s starter of smoked salmon, then lamb for main course and a chocolate brownie for dessert. I chose the ling as a main course and not have a starter. Trying to get drinks was also hard.
The other people ordered after us, but their food arrived before ours!! They arrived and ordered after us. We waited and waited and eventually my husband's starter arrived. Impossible to get starter cleared and any attention at all. The other people who arrived and ordered after us had nearly finished when our main arrived.
Trying to get menu so I could choose a dessert was impossible. It was now 21.45 as service so slow and they close at 22.00! I chose the most unusual looking desert which was puff pastry, kulur with rhubarb- called 1947. It was 3 small donuts when it arrived with tiny bits of tasteless rhubarb compote by the side.
Woman waitress had been going around asking everyone how their meal was and they all said "lovely". When she came to me, I told her the truth about abysmal service and bad dessert and she hardly apologised.
We have stayed in an apartment just around the corner from this restaurant twice and we will return there, but never to this restaurant.

Dear Peggy.
Thank you for writing a review about us here at Old Iceland restaurant.
I am really sorry to hear about your experience at our restaurant. The matter has been dealt with and we will of course learn from our mistakes. I really hope that you and your husband will give us the opportunity to make things right for you on our expense.
Our main goal is to leave all our customers happy after visiting us for a meal, in this case we failed at that and for that I am truly sorry. Please contact me personally at the restaurant and I will make this up to you.
All the best,
Thorsteinn

Had a wonderful dinner here, we didn’t have a reservation but the hostess was kind enough to accommodate a table for us if we waited 30 minutes. The service was terrific, they were extremely attentive and friendly throughout our meal. We ordered the seafood soup, lamb and cod. The cod was one of the most tender fish I had ever had. I would highly recommend this restaurant to my friends and family as they serve high quality delicious meals at a decent price!

We were served by the most amazing waitress who recommended a fantastic dish of house caught fish with a mushroom risotto. Desert was finished with an Icelandic coffee. I cannot recommend the food enough. If there is a wait to be seated, I can honestly say it is worth the wait. The atmosphere is cosy and service is superb. My most favourite place to visit in Reykjavik by far.

We turned up on our first evening at 5.00 pm to eat and got a table for 4. though people who arrived after us were put on a waiting list. The staff were very friendly and the food is amazing. We ate here 2 nights in a row because the food was so good. There is no loud music so our autistic Son felt happy here.

My partner and I ate here on our final night in Reykjavik. We had not booked but were welcomed and seated straight away; the restaurant filled very quickly afterwards and many people were asked to come back later. Despite demand for tables we never felt rushed to finish our meals.
The food was exceptional. We each had a fish dish and a dessert and all of the food was incredible. The flavours are complex and the presentation beautiful.
The staff were also attentive and polite; I was especially impressed with a young man who spoke French, English, and Icelandic - it's amazing to have staff who speak a variety of languages.
I would highly recommend this beautiful little restaurant. We only wished we had visited earlier!

We popped into Old Iceland Restaurant for dinner. We started with some tasty seafood soup. The redfish special served with vegetables on the side was very tasty. The cod was great too. Small restaurant with special friendly ambience. A winner in Reykjavik.

We arrived without a booking on the day storm Dennis hit Iceland and they managed to squeeze us in despite Reykjavik being virtually shut down all day. The menu is not extensive and is mostly fish or lamb. My husband had fish soup to start and catch of the day and I had salmon to start and fish soup as a main course. Everything was luscious and very beautifully presented and flavoured. Service was relaxed and informal but attentive.

Delicious Icelandic food! It’s a small and popular restaurant and we had to wait for 25 mins so left our name and came back and it was well worth the wait. The staff are very attentive and friendly the food was amazing.Y partner is vegetarian and eats no fish so although not a great lot of choice for him his food did taste amazing! We had two starters, two mains, a dessert - the Rhubarb cake is amazing - almost like a crumble, 3 beers and it was about £100 but well worth the money. Good quality was amazing. Would recommend people to eat here and if you can book do try or get there early. We went for 630pm and had to wait.

This was a great recommendation, not far from our hotel on the main shopping street. While the restaurant was small, they happily accommodated our party of 6 without reservations. We were all more than happy with our food choices. Hearty soups for starters with warm bread and butter. The fish of the day was pan fried ling. The cod was fresh and served with potatoes and champagne sauce. The lamb was cooked perfectly. We split a warm oat cake desert with rhubarb and strawberries. The service was excellent and they didn’t mind splitting a check.
High recommendations from this food snob!

The restaurant is located on a main street in the city and fortunately we made reservations in advance, since reservations are in demand. Everyone enjoyed our meals. Most had fish, which likely was fresh and tasty. The cod was exceptional.

Just a block from our hotel, Old Iceland is a really small place with maybe 32 seats. It’s also very popular so I’m glad I had made a reservation. When we arrived our table for 6 was not ready so they suggested we go down the street for a drink and come back in 15 or so minutes. While I was initially unhappy with this, it worked out fine. My husband and I both had the cream of mushroom soup which was probably some of the best we’ve ever had. They set down a bowl with enoki mushrooms, a wild mushroom paste, and some herbs. They then poured in a hot mushroom-cream mixture. It was delicious! I had the local Lamb for dinner and my husband had Beef Cheeks. Both came with a variety of veggies including plantains. Both dishes were outstanding. I had the Rhubarb cake for dessert. Dinner with a glass of wine and a beer was $170. It was the perfect choice for dinner.

This is a popular restaurant. However I felt the food to be disappointing. Their mushroom soup was excellent but the scallops disappointing, small and cold. The main of beef cheek was pleasant And the lamb was good but fatty. There was limited vegetable accompaniment. Wines were very expensive but that is widespread in Iceland. Some of the servers were warm and helpful but others remote and keen to clear plates as there was a queue outside for waiting diners.

Dear 700Tom. Thank you for writing a review about us here at Old Iceland restaurant. I'm sorry that we didn't live up to your expectations. We ask all of our costumers about their experience before they leave the restaurant. We try our very best every day of the year, but of course we sometimes make mistakes and will gladly correct them when we can. We are in this business to make people happy and we strive to send everyone away with a smile on their face. In your case we didn't do that and for that I am sorry.
Hope to see you again some day here at Old Iceland restaurant
