We were greeted with a smile in the elegant setting that the grillmarket is. This was after having delayed our table twice. The environment at the grillmarket is stunning. The walls are either covered with columnar rocks, fish skin, icelandic moss or beautiful artwork from the Icelandic scenery and daily life. On the upper floor you can see directly into the kitchen where the chefs are hard at work, the stairway down is flanked by tall windows and encircles a magical chandelier with more lights than I can count. The lower floor the bar stacked with rocks and topped with thick wooden panels sits where all can see the bartenders mixing their drinks. There is a lot more to describe, a warm and cozy drinks and desert area, many different sitting areas and more but let it suffice to say the enviroment is enchanting. The service was impeccable. We delayed our table twice and both times you could sense the willingness to help and you knew they were doing the best they could for us. We arrived 2 hours late, were greeted with a smile and guided to one of the best tables I have had the pleasure of being seated at. The servants were never to close so we had our privacy but never to far if we needed something. Our waiter Alex put together a tasting menu specially made for us (Pescatarian and peanut allergy.) and if we needed something it was provided. The food itself was mouth watering. Before it even entered our field of view the smell had already enchanted us. It was laid out in a artistic manner, described expertly by the food runners, effortless to eat and tasted like a little piece of heaven. After all this they allowed us to sit and enjoy the evening for a considerable amount of time after we had finished eating. Nobody rushed us, we got up in our own time and we saw nothing but smiles as we thanked the staff for a wonderful evening and left very full and very happy.

Ok this is THE fine dining place to eat in Iceland. A friend had visited Iceland last year and recommended it to me. It was my favorite meal the entire trip. Nothing we ordered disappointed- cocktails, appetizers and entrees- all provided an explosion of flavors in my mouth. I ordered the meat grill with rib eye, duck breast, and fillet lamb. My friend ordered the fish grill with salmon and two other fishes I can’t remember. We shared both and could have easily had left overs but it was too good to leave. The meat is prepared medium rare so you will need to inform the waiter if you prefer a different temperature. However, I wouldn’t recommend going over medium. Only regret is that we had to leave for a northern lights tour and did not get to enjoy desert. I don’t understand how it is not rated higher on trip advisor as the meal was magnificent. Highly recommend this restaurant, but make reservations ahead of time as it is very popular. We walked in and were fortunate to get bar seats. Definitely worth eating here during your time!

Came at the recommendation of a friend and was not disappointed. The atmosphere was modern yet with uniquely Icelandic features (tables, fixtures, walls). Service was very helpful, with several English speaking waiters; the wine recommendation was excellent. Ordering the Chef Sampler was a good choice. We were served puffin, shrimp, cod, and duck based appetizers, with lox, lamb, and ram samplers from the main course options. Dessert was a variety trey of sorbets, fruits, ice cream, and pastries. The right amount of food for a sampler, not too light given its cost (about $100-120), and not too heavy. The dishes were locally sourced ingredients simply and expertly prepared. Each meat was prepared at just the right temperature. The sauces for each dish tended to balance out other flavors. The meal was expensive compared to say, an ordinary meal, so budget appropriately. If you want a high class dinner and a sample of what the best of Iceland has to offer in the culinary world, you must go here.

We have been to iceland 4 times and to the grillmarket 4 times. Unfortunately our experience at the grillmarket has gotten worse each time. On our first visit, the portions were huge and the bread and butter was very unique tasting. Our last few visits have not been as good. Our most recent visit, the steak was very small and burnt and tough. The chicken skewers were also very small. The bread and butter was just normal bread and butter. Overall the portions were very small. The service was slow and impolite. I asked for tea with milk and I was served a horrible tasting and smelling herbal tea. The chocolate caramel ball dessert has changed from vanilla ice cream to very strong coffee ice cream which just ruins the whole dessert. The prices haven't changed though. I will try other restaurants on my next visit. I don't think Grillmarket is the best in Reykjavik anymore. Solon on the same street is much better with great fish and chips.

We ate here on the first night of our week-long vacation and it was the BEST meal of the trip! We did the sampler meal so we were able to try about 5 appetizers, 3 entrees, and an assortment of desserts. The stand out dishes were the whale, the ribeye steak with marrow sauce, the lamb (entree), the char entree, the lamb salad, and the dessert with coffee ice cream covered in a chocolate shell (sorry I don't know the name of it). While it was a pricey dining experience, everything we tried was delicious and the service was outstanding so this was well worth it. The chef was kind enough to swap out some dishes for me since I'm pregnant and couldn't eat everything that was included on the tasting menu. The food was flavorful and interesting, and the cocktails were excellent. This restaurant is truly awesome.

My boyfriend and I had Valentine's dinner here and we never wanted to leave. The aesthetic of the restaurant is so cool and unique, it was our first meal in Iceland and it set the bar so high. We both picked the "bartender's choice" option for our cocktails, picked our alcohol of choice and left the rest up to the bartender. It was the best cocktail I've ever had, as was my boyfriends. We got the pork rib as an appetizer which was delicious. I had the lamb and he had the fish gourmet, both were excellent. I'm allergic to gluten and they had a gluten free menu in english which made everything so easy. The service was wonderful, everyone was kind and attentive. While it's pricy, the food and experience were worth it, this was a first-class dining experience.

My husband and I enjoy splurging on a meal, when it's worth the money (we were on our honeymoon so splurging was the name of the game). At Grillmarkadurinn, it's worth the money. We did one of the tasting meals and were excited about everything that we ate. The drinks are also on the high end but we don't regret ordering anything that we had. This restaurant was recommended to me by a friend and we're still really good friends after eating here. I'd call it 'an experience' really... don't miss it!

As an avid, NYC-based food enthusiast, I was excited to snag a reservation at this restaurant after having heard wonderful reviews from travelers we'd met while in Reykjavik. We had a 9pm reservation on a Sunday which, I suspect, may have accounted for much of the negative experience (though there were two or three reservation times after ours so we were hardly the last diners to be seated for the night). We ordered the tasting menu with the accompanying wine pairing upon being seated a few minutes after 9pm. By 9:12pm, the first two courses had already been hastily plopped down on our table as well as glasses of champagne and a white wine, neither with any explanation or tasting note. The waitstaff was cold and didn't bother to explain any of the dishes as they placed them on the table rapidly one after the next. The food and beverages came out so quickly that we often had multiple courses on the table at once and left many of the wine pairings scarcely sampled before we were off to the next course - none of which were exceptional in any way. Finally, a few courses in, Will became our dedicated server and was highly engaging and not only explained the dishes and the accompanying wines, but also spoke with us about his family, Icelandic culture, etc. While his hospitality was warm and welcoming, unfortunately the damage had been done. With only three evenings in Reykjavik, I was terribly disappointed to have wasted one of our dinners at Grillmarkadurinn where I felt incredibly rushed through an expensive meal. We had superlative experiences at Ox and Fiskfelagid on the other nights and would highly recommend either as an alternative.

For a sit-down full service meal in Reykjavik, this is our favourite so far. It’s setting is unique, firstly a little difficult to find if you’re not aware that it’s hidden behind another building, and secondly when you do finally find it and get shown to your table, you descend underground into a very tastefully done granite underworld that’s well lit and busy yet cosy. The menu has everything you might want to try that’s away from the usual menu options of your home town (horse, Minke, puffin, etc) as well as usual options and is cooked to perfection, and a fab wine list. A meal for 2 is around £250, so whilst it may not be your every-day local, it’s an absolute must to visit when in town.

We booked after reading the outstanding reviews. We opted for the tasting menu which was expensive but felt it was worth pushing the boat out. Our waiter was faultless and friendly. We explained we didn’t want to include any whale or puffin to the menu, which thankfully it didn’t this week. The food was a good quality and present beautifully. We were disappointed though as none of it was to our taste. A real shame and not the fault of the restaurant. In hindsight I wish I’d chosen from the main menu.

A birthday meal for the whole family. We had pre booked and had a little trouble finding the restaurant. Once there they were incredibly attentive, provided a colouring book and pens for our 3 year old as well as a great service throughout the meal. every dish was explained. We were disappointed that the Grilled Reindeer was not avialable depsite being on the menu. Everything was delicious (although the puffin wasnt felt to be as exciting as we had hoped). The portions were also a very good size, none of the 2 mouthfuls and youve finished here! I was presented with a dessert complete with sparkler candle as well. Expensive at about £100 per head for the adults but worth it.

Excellent dinner, top quality ingredients (meet, fish and whale), outstanding professional service, beautiful location with a curious central spiral stair decorated by trunks. Trunks and lava stones also at the walls. A delay in delivering of a dish, they compensated us by means of a material discount on the bill and they offered the dessert to all the table (5 people). This is outstanding care of customers!

We went there based on a suggestion of a local and we walked pass by it, so if we hadn't know the place, we would have missed it. Better signage (in the dark) would be beneficial. We didn't expect such a nice big place in that back alley, and on top of that the food and service was excellent too. The tenderloin was exquisite. A bit expensive, but all restaurants are in Reykjavik, so if you want value for money and have a good meal in a hip and trendy place, go to Grillmarkaðurinn.

Christmas Day dinner, December 25, and no ripoff dinner to be served here. No, this place defied the all too present holiday tradition of gouging customers and offering mediocre food and service. Here, EVERYTHING was EXCEPTIONAL!!! The service was professional, friendly and capable. I am NOT a steakhouse lover. This could change my mind. Simply put, one of the tastiest most beautifully prepared steaks I have ever had; here in Iceland!! Every morsel on the plate was fantastic. Loved, loved, loved our dinner here.

A little hidden behind another restaurant on the Main Street you find this modern design foot gem. We enjoyed the puffin, the whale steak (albeit could have been served a little warmer) and the salmon. All very delicious. The desert platter to share was a great ending to a very nice dinner. Now, you are in iceland and without any wine - just 3 Aperol to start - you pay 360 to 400 Euro’s for 3. That’s sobering;)
