About
Seafood restaurant by the old harbor in Reykjavik, Iceland. Founder is Kjartan Halldórsson who lived and served at the Seabaron until Elísabet, an employee who worked at the Seabaron took over, helped him continue the business when it got busier every year and bought the business before his passing. They're unique grandfather/daughter relationship became a blooming business by the old harbor and more and more people wanted to come and try this old fishermans lobster soup that he swore to be the best in the world! Kjartan is remembered by anyone that was lucky enough to meet him and his spirit still lives at the Seabaron. The menu is the same as when Kjartan was around. We continue to serve fairly priced fresh Icelandic fish grilled on skewers and the worlds best lobster soup!

My wife and I were staying in an AirBnB nearby the harbour so decided to check this place out having received a number of recommendations for their lobster soup and fish sticks, pretty much all they sell.
The inside of the restaurant isn’t big, so if it’s busy, you could find yourself without a table as it is first come, first served. All the waitresses working there were very accommodating despite some truly stupid questions from a number of Chinese and American tourists.
So yes, like most of Iceland, this place has become a victim of its success and is frequented only by tourists who have heard about this place from YouTube travel bloggers.
So onto the food, we ordered one lobster soup to share, a red fish stick, a tusk fish stick and a potato stick as an accompaniment. It set me back about 5000 ISK which is about £35, pricey but then this is Iceland. All of it was excellent quality, fresh and extremely tasty. Basic it is, but done to perfection it is also.
I highly recommend this place if you fancy a cheap bite to eat of beautifully fresh charcoal grilled fish and a tasty soup with some nice bread.

First night in Reykjavík and had our northern lights tour cancelled due to weather. We were totally okay with this though, because it gave us a little exploring time to check out the town and also some great places to eat. We asked our tour guide for the best place to try Hakarl, and she recommended the Sea Baron. We wandered in and found the girls behind the counter really friendly and helpful! We ordered one skewer of Hakarl each, one shot each of Brennivín (they actually have a little deal for this!), and then we both ordered the lobster soup and bread. Maybe 2 bites in to our soup (which came out insanely fast!) we already started joking (maybe?) about returning for lunch tomorrow. The soup was amazing, the ambiance is exactly what we wanted in a little local seafood diner, and the staff was very welcoming. I highly recommend this place!

Had a meal here after seeing it on utube was defo worth a visit we had the lobster soup which comes with fresh bread and a fish skewer which you pick yourself from the fridge display. It was very nice and the restaurant although not avant guard is a traditional harbour building lined in wood with old lamps and furniture which we loved. The staff were friendly and the price wasn’t too bad given we were in Reykjavik would definitely recommend if ur in the area.

The settings of the restaurant are very simple, some long wooden tables and some plastic barrels as chairs (with more seating upstairs if the weather allows).
The food was very good. The lobster soup was fresh with a generous amount of tender lobster meat, and the tusk skewers were large, fresh and grilled very well.
We paid 2899 isk for a lobster soup, a skewer and bread, which is a descent price compared to the general price level in Iceland.

The lobster soup was insane - creamy (with coconut milk!), well seasoned and (most importantly) filled with lobster meat. The bread served with it was also delicious. We also shared a local fish skewer that was cooked perfectly - fish was tender and fresh. The minke whale was also sampled and served with a nice sauce.

We asked one of the locals near the harbour about the best place to eat for food that's enjoyable and not too pricey and in a heartbeat he recommended the Sea Baron. It might not look like much on the outside but the seafood soup and fish skewer lunch was bliss and the non-pretence of this place, where seafood has been served for a very long time, only added to the feeling of being home.

We had researched and come across this restaurant. Im glad we did as from the outside you wouldnt necessarily think to go in. It was surprising big inside with the upstairs area. We were accomodated straight away and the ordering by picking our skewers was explained. We thought all the food was delicious and it was a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere, other customers but not packed out. We'd go back for sure.

Came here since we heard lots of people recommended this place on travel channels for its lobster soup which was nice and different and perfect for the cold winter month. It was tasty but I didn't think it wAs the best. The grilled prawns skewers were great and we really enjoyed them. The restaurant serves fresh fish and we glad we came here.

Wow, this place is an absolute must if you love fish and to make things even better is so reasonably priced. The fish skewers are beautiful and change depending on what has been caught that day. You choose your fish and accompaniments and then they grill it to perfection for you. The lobster soup was stunning and well worth it. Having been told Iceland was expensive before going I was surprised to find such amazing food for such a reasonable price. Dinner for 2 (we did share a soup as it was large) 2 different fish skewers, veg and 2 drinks was about £30. The staff are so friendly and the setting epitomised the quirkiness of Reykjavik. Definitely recommend

It is the typical touristy restaurant offering cheap seafood, fresh but very average overall. Place is small, staff is very friendly but cannot make up for the quality of the cook.
All fish was overcooked on the skewer. Salmon is fresh but when overcooked, It is such a waste ! The lobster soup is very diluted and does not taste like lobster. If you’re a tourist and want to say that you’ve had the Icelandic lobster soup, probably a bargain but definitely not the best of what you can have.

Hi Notsurewhatyoumean
Thanks for taking the time out to write us a review.
I'm very sorry to hear about your experience with the overcooked food which is not acceptable.
I hope you were refunded when this happened and if not we would like to make it up to you.
The soup however is definitely different to most thick lobster soups served in Iceland.
We have always used the same recipe since it's popularity began rising after we started serving it but then again we all have different preferences :)
I hope you have a great day.

We went with the lunch special which worked out approx to €20 give or take a euro (lobster soup with fresh bread and fish skewer).Cosy spot next to the harbour. Space was a bit tight but I found this added to the experience. Fast service, friendly staff , food was yum 😋

This popular spot is right on the harbour. Be prepared to wait (10 mins) as it seems to be on everyone’s list. They have communal tables - a couple at the front and a larger room at the back.
Their offers are great value, lobster soup with a skewer of grilled fish. I recommend also adding some sauce if you like to spice tastes up.

The old harbor has charming restaurants and walking areas to museums and activities. So glad we chose this one to eat. It opens at 6:00 but the line forms early to order at the counter one by one. They try to move it along quickly. To your left are pre-made examples on the various seafood skewers you can order along with a veggie one and potatoes. Their signature dish is lobster bisque with bread. We got some of everything and the skewers were much better than the soup. The soup was inexpensive with 3 tiny bits of lobster floating there. Staff were very nice and they seat you European style so don't expect a private table. They have an upstairs area and outside picnic tables and can easily manage groups of 8 or more. I enjoyed it as it felt authentic!

As with a fair amount of Iceland's restaurants The Sea Baron intentionally has a limited simple menu however this should not put anyone off. The dishes they specialise in are cooked to a very high standard. We had Fish Skewers and Lobster soup, the skewer especially was simply the best I had ever tasted. With your order you also are offered free Coffee - refill as you like. Staff very friendly - very easygoing atmosphere.
Highly recommend this Harbour-side restaurant to all visitors to Reykjavik.

We’d had this place recommended to us as we were keen to try the famous lobster soup. The place itself is found on the harbour clustered with a number of other quick service places to eat and the interior is traditional and basic as opposed to high end - but that suited us. The lobster soup was delicious and hot and very reasonably priced. I’ve dropped a star because the service was odd. They seemed surprised that we wanted to eat there and it was all a bit vague as to what we could order and where we could sit - an off day maybe. But if you want to try traditional Icelandic food in a quirky environment then you could worse than choose to come here.
