Very nice restaurant with excellent service. Fixed menu for dinner but some flexibility with the dishes for allergies or dislikes. Room downstairs is excellent for group meetings. Good choice of drinks and not too difficult to get to from the ferry. Would recommend.

We were staying in an apartment close by and had to pick up the key from here. We were made to feel so welcome we had a drink in the cafe and booked to eat the following night. The fixed menu is 5 courses and...costs 48 euros. There was a vegetarian and non vegetarian option using locally sourced products and I think it changes every night ! There is a great range of wines. The food was fabulous and our waiter , David , couldn’t have been more helpful ! The whole experience really made our stay in Amsterdam a visit to remember - thanks guys!More

The staff was unfriendly. We had a sad looking cheese plate for 3 people for 45€!!! Way too expensive for a few bites of cheese. Tables were not cleaned, glasses dirty. Worst experience in Noord, even Amsterdam - enjoy if you like crappy places!

Café Modern has a carefully cultivated retro-casual atmosphere. A lot of seats indoors and now also quite some outdoors in the summer season. The food is delicate and organic, the bread wholesome and self baked. You can take home a loaf for a cool six...euros.More

Cafe Modern is a retro-casual haute cuisine restaurant located in a former branch of the Twentsche bank. The toilets actually are inside the former safe. The cooking is solid, organic, imaginative, tasty. The only menu option essentially is a five course set dinner which can...be trimmed down to a four or three course. The waiters are more relaxed than you and service therefore is very laid-back but still acceptable. Wines rather special, all organic types. Bread sturdy and wholesome and baked locally in a big oven. Overall a rather interesting dining experience. Just 10 minutes walking from the free 24x7 ferry crossing from Central Station.More

Went here with some friends and we chose the tasting menu, which consists of 4 dishes and 1 dessert. Food quality and presentation of the dishes is great. Portions are quite small tho. Service provided by the staff is friendly and helpful. It's a little...bit of a snobbish place in a gentrified part of Amsterdam. Prices are equally high. Expect to pay 60 euro per person with 1 drink included.More

This is a wonderful restaurant in an up and coming part of Amsterdam that serves great food. Been there twice and I was always satisfied by the quality of the food. The service was outstanding on both times and super friendly which is extremely rare...in Amsterdam. Slightly on the expensive side at around €75 per person including wine but well worth it. I hope it doesn’t get ruined once it’s exposed to the hordes of tourists roaming the city.More

The food was great, no menu but courses. They take your requests seriously and the wine suggestion matched our dinner well. Please note that some waiters are more professional then others. They do tend to forget you at times even when the place isn’t packed......In the end of the day and with some patience the food made up for the little errors overall we had a positive experience.More

This is a nice try. Another example of a hipster place with young, and I have to say, lovely staff. This time in Noord (on the other side of the IJ above Amsterdam). The food was nice. Not terrific but nice. The menu of 40...euro's for 4 small portions if on the high side. 10 euro for an appetizer of tomato (if you don't eat meat) is on the steep side. The wines they have all reflect the sign of the times. And they all resemble one another. There is no real variety. The wines are dry, leaning towards tart and sour and are all very light. If you're into that (and toute hip and happening Amsterdam unfortunately thinks that) this might be fine with you but after tasting 5 wines and not really finding any appealing, I decided to go with applejuice. Only to find out they didn't have that either. Gin and tonic was my next choice. It came in a small water glass with a bit of gin, a lot of ice and a bottle of tonic that when poured into the glass, still contained more that 2/3's. When asking for a large glas, I got a beer glass which still couldn't hold everything to properly mix it so I ended up pouring half of the gin in the beerglass leaving half of it in the waterglass. Ok. maybe it's not about the drinks but about the ambiance. Which was fine although inside the acoustics are so bad everyone ends up screaming at each other in order to be heard. The plusses: The staff. All of them friendly, polite and patient and willing to help. Average: The food The downside: The drinks, the price and the hard seats that could have been taken from a run down cafetaria. Would I return? Not likely. There are so many better options in the same price range (did I mention the wines by the glass are on average around 6,50 euro?) that I would happily bypass Café Modern in future.More

Coming from this part of town originally (Amsterdam Noord) i had to try this place, but every time i was back 'home' it was already fully booked. I finally managed though and took my parents for a meal. it certainly exceeded my expectations. the menu...is really nice, very diverse and a bit different catering to everybody and the drink and wine list is really really nice. There were a lot of wines i had never heard of on the list and they had beers from a brewery just up the road. Just different in a very informal setting and it was clear that quite some local people eat here as several people knew staff and kitchen chefs personally. Staff in general also very nice, helpfull and knowledgeable. Just a great experience and my parents both older then 70 also really enjoyed this modern eatery.More

It was way too salty. We loved the food it’s self. The idea, the taste, also the wine. The service was excellent too. Though, we needed to complain after the second dish, that the food had been too salty:(

We had an excellent meal - the fixed price menu is really good value for money and the wine is reasonably priced. The menu is ambitious but not extravagant or overly complicated. Flavours and textures are well balanced and the courses complement each other perfectly....Great attention to detail and very helpful service from all. I would definitely book again!More

Café Modern is a lovely restaurant in Amsterdam North. A part of the town where The Eye is located ( great impressive modern filmmuseum) the neighbourhood is upcoming and this restaurant proves it. Great vegetarian dishes , fantastic enthousiastic waiters ( which is remarkable for...Amsterdam ) and beautiful biological wines. This is a places for foodies who don’t like exaggeration its affordable too. Ok you have to shout a bit : the acoustic is quite terrible ( old schoolbuilding ) But love the place !More

Hey Connie, They have a couple of tiny tables outside on the sidewalk but not really nice. If you want a nice terrace I would opt for somewhere else. Don't remember a patio at all. When you go inside, there's no 'back... More
