Simple restaurant
James St. is the coming together of two of Belfast’s best restaurants, James Street South Restaurant and The Bar and Grill at James St.The new offering is the best of the Bar and Grill's menu with a few light touches to the fine cooking of James Street South. Classic dishes are firmly established on the menu from the crab and chilli linguine, Dundrum crab used on toast, alongside classic bistro dishes such as farmhouse terrine, fruit de mer plates available from Thursday. The charcoal grill still plays centre stage, cooking not just some of the best steaks and prime cuts Northern Ireland has to offer but also fresh whole fish, pork and vegetables. Another successful evening at this Belfast staple which offers marvellous local meat. I had the 10oz ribeye medium rare with pepper sauce and sweet potato chips with truffle dusting and it was beautifully cooked with a robust beefy flavour. We had a bottle of Italian...red which drank rather quickly.More

Party of 6 and everyone thoroughly enjoyed every single morsel, staff were great very pleasant and friendly. Only minor issue was the lack of atmosphere as we were seated in the Grill Room. And the entrance to it feels somewhat you are being led to...the kitchen directly.More

Our family party enjoyed an amazing evening dinner, with cocktails, wines, starters, mains and post prandial espresso martinis all served by great staff in a lively and buzzing atmosphere. Probably the best Rib Eye steak ever!!

This review is in relation to gift voucher issues and staff attitude. Can't fault the food but after being a customer for a long time, i can say i will not be returning. It's my birthday next weekend so rang to book a table and...after card details were taken i asked the lady could we use our gift voucher that expired December 2020. I explained we didn't get the opportunity to use it due to the various corona lockdowns and had rang during the year, past 6 months to confirm it was still usable. The lady said it depended on whether its still in date and asked for the code. I rang back approximately 17.00pm and spoke to a guy called Peter and asked him could we use it. He went and checked and said no sorry it had been extended to July 2021 but it can't be used now. I said well why wasn't i told that the last time i rang and he asked who i spoke to about that. Of course i can't remember the ladys name who said it would be fine. He didn't have a very nice attitude towards me, asked why i hadn't used it in the past six months seeing as they were open, i said not everyone has been able to get out for a meal. He questioned why i hadn't contacted them, i reiterated that i had and i was told it was fine to use. I asked to speak to senior management and he said he was that and there was no one else except the proprietors to speak to. Questioned why i hadn't used the voucher for a take away box from hadakis. I explained i didn't enjoy the food there the previous times i had been and that this voucher was specifically for James street South. Then he just said, nothing he can do for me. His attitude was horrible and i wasn't rude to him, but to cancel vouchers on customers and take the money without honouring what they said in the first place is completely unprofessional. You don't speak to customers in that tone, not even apologetic in their tone and provide a reason why they would not accept the voucher. Just, sorry can't help you, you should have used it sooner or used in our other restaurant.! Really shocked at this. We would have spent quadruple the voucher next Sunday anyway! Must be able to afford to lose customers! Not happy. :(More

Where to begin. Starter- sourgh dough bread, the best that could be said of this dish was that it was the only one I could stomach. Once you get past the outer crust, it was ok. A serving suggestion to get through the outer crust...would be to serve it with a hack saw. Main- I was informed by the server that they had run out of fillet (he really wasn't joking). I ordered the T Bone steak. After considerable dissection of the specimen, I managed to extract what little meat there was leaving the 60-70% of fat on the plate. I was decidedly unimpressed by this stage but thought what the hell, they couldnt screw up the desert. How naive I was. The cheese was my choice. It arrived and the presentation was awful. Despite the initial disappointment on viewing the three puny specimens of cheese (fair play to whoever cut them that small, it must have taken skill). Then on sampling the accompanying chutney I had to contend with my gag reflex. This was akin to eating battery acid. At this point I hadn't much choice but to give up. The manager did apologise and deducted the offending dishes from the bill, although who could have charged for them with a straight face is beyond me. I had chosen this resturant as a treat for my wife and I as part of our anniversary. It came highly recommended and is listed on the Michelin Guide. I cant fault the serving staff who were very polite but badly let down by the kitchen. This is not an inexpensive establishment, to have one course go wrong can happen, but there is no excuse for all three to be bad. I couldn't recommend this place to anyone and would sooner suggest visting a fast food shop in the area of Shaftsbury Square. NB- The beer and wine are very good.More

Enjoyed a lovely dinner at this laid back restaurant. Interesting choices for all courses and a good selection of wines too.

A super meal served with knowledgeable attentive staff and one I am keen to visit again. Staff training is very often overlooked but when you experience good waiting staff it enhances the experience.

This is a very well presented bistro with great staff. The food was excellent too. We had spatchcock chicken and bacon chop both beautifully cooked with interesting veg selections. There is an interesting wine list covering all price brackets. Only gripe would be the disappointing...baked scallop starter which did not appear to two scallop lovers. This did not stop us booking a return visit later in our holiday.More

Restaurant is in a good location and staff were welcoming on arrival. Restaurant is split into 2. First half looks great, with a good atmosphere. Unfortunately we were seated through in the bar section. Only 2 of us and we were seated at a large...table for 6! It was a metal table and felt like a morgue. Bright lights in this area with absolutely no atmosphere. 2 other tables left shortly after we had arrived so we were then left in this whole area ourselves. Main restaurant area was still vibes and busy. Honestly felt completely excluded. Terrible set up and the restaurant needs to cater better for its guests. The waitress was very nice though. I ordered the chicken as a main which was delicious although covered in a thick greasy skin! I would not go back here.More

We went to the restaurant with high expectations from TA reviews. We found the food to be disappointing for the prices we paid. The crab linguine was more Irish (creamy noodles) than anything recognisably Italian. Apart from this, the service was very good and the...restaurant had great atmosphere.More
