We always eat at Rules once whenever we are in London. This time was also a great experience, although not quite matching previous visits. Décor, service, etc. were perfect as usual. My potted shrimp starter was a not very tasty mess of a few shrimps...in a brown mush – nothing like real potted shrimps used to be. For main course I had the roast beef, which was good, but not as outstanding as I had expected – a little tough and overdone and very ordinary (and huge) Yorkshire pudding. My wife had the steak and kidney pudding, which she pronounce fabulous. Desserts were great and traditional, as usual. But overall just a little disappointed compared to previous visits.More
This lunch was booked by my husband, for myself, his brother and wife. I was treating them all. I am a vegetarian. Enquired before we went about a vegetarian menu, assured there was one. Basically the menu was extracts from the main menu and the...mains were the sides from the main menu. Upon reading this on arrival I chose not to have any of the mains...and asked for a Yorkshire pudding, some new potatoes and spinach. And that's exactly what I got delivered like I was a second class citizen and made to feel like that!!! 2 Yorkshire puddings in a bowl and potatoes and spinach on a plate. No attempt at presentation. The chef was unable to make a vegetarian gravy, I had a mustard dressing. A restaurant of the calibre it presents itself as, should have done better. Thoughtless and dismissive. There will be no return from me. The rest of my party enjoyed...all meat eaters. I believe vegetarians are 14% of the population now, I feel a little more than vegetables should be offered as an alternative to the main menu in a restaurant of the prestige they want to show.More
While Rules is not a cheap dinner it is well worth it. Both my wife and I had 3 courses and all were delicious. We had the guinea fowl and duck confit which were cooked to perfection. We had great service from our waiter(do not remember...his name) We felt welcomed form start to finish. Wine is quite expensive but our waiter suggested glasses of more affordable ones and they were fantastic! Beautiful room, very cozy. £205 for 3 courses and 2 drinks each.More
Well thought out, small but tradition British menu with simple, not posy or precocious dishes.Generous portions. Shrimps and delicious bread, followed by steak pudding and spinach. A bottle of Merlot (well worth the money). Sophie our new waitress could not have been more helpful and on...hand to look after us. The restaurant itself is old England, relaxed and comfortable. We eat and cook well at home and do not consider ourselves as fine diners who enjoy spending large sums of money on meals out but this was memorable and excellent value for the money. We look forward to another visit.More
I have been coming to Rules for a number of years now and it has always been a lovely experience. Make sure you go to the cocktail bar pre and post dinner 😀.
Booked as had long been aware of Rules reputation for British food and its main USP - the oldest restaurant in London. Sadly it did not live up to expectation. Food was okay but not exceptional, which considering the high prices was massively disappointing. A...rather insipid sea trout carpaccio starter with very bland beetroot and horseradish cream with no kick. The smoked salmon was average. Followed by an expensive piece of beef - a rump steak in ‘devilled butter’. No explanation that the butter glaze contained very pungent and burnt fennel. We requested medium rare but it was tough and chewy meat and my son could only eat half. Husband had the steak and kidney pudding which was fine. The waiting staff were lacklustre and only appeared keen when we arrived, leaving us to pull out the table ourselves to leave and barely asking us how our meals were or if we were happy. The venue is full of character although being stared down on by a mural of Maggie Thatcher was disconcerting. And it’s very overpriced. A big disappointment to us and no return planned. The place was half empty, suspect it has been resting on its laurels for too long and unless it reviews its food and prices the only people going will be the old faithful - I can’t see how it will survive a recessionMore
I booked months in advance and we were seated near the bar area that collected dishes and glasses so it was particularly noisy. Food was just okay. I had cod which was cooked to perfection but the olive tapenade on top over powered the fish...and the roasted fennel I couldn’t put a knife through. Husband had steak which was very average unfortunately. Service was good.More
My first return visit to this exceptional restaurant after we moved to Spain over 20 years ago. It was not a disappointment. Far from it. It was a most enjoyable meal with superb service and a lovely warm ambience.
Rules is the oldest restaurant in London and it is an interesting place to visit. However, we were fairly disappointed in our meal. Several of us were interested in the lamb but it was 86'd on a Wednesday night at 7:00. We ended up doing...the Sunday roast which was a generous portion but super chewy and not very flavorful. Service was meh - not great but not horrible. For the money, we would definitely dine elsewhere next trip.More
Another historic visit and although disappointed we booked just before grouse was available, the Guinea Fowl was a good replacement. The setting, service and experience was as expected and still the best eating experience in London.
Service was worse than horrible. We purposely left over half of our food to go home. The server threw the food in the dust bin. We explicitly asked for it to go home. Yet it was gone gone. Next we ordered dessert and wanted our...coffee with our dessert. No coffees. When asked the coffees finally came but both decaf. This restaurant needs to fire folks and train folks how to provide service. And this is Mickey rated!?!? Please be aware of not substandard service but of absolutely the worst!!!More
Recently spent my Birthday weekend in London with friends. Visited Rules for Dinner for the very first time on my actual Birthday after being recommended by friends. Didn't disappoint. From the moment you walked into this restaurant it was something special. The restaurant itself was...steeped in tradition and is what a 'Proper' restaurant should be. Decor and ambiance superb. The food and wine were absolutely delicious and the service excellent. Both myself, my wife and friends loved every minute we were there, so much so that my friend sent a message and stated what a wonderful weekend we had all had with the pierce de la resistance being dinner at Rules, which we totally agreed with. Would recommend to anyone and will certainly be returning when next in London.More
An evening visit with friends and what an amazing experience - the food and service were great and all in a stunning environment with so much history. Definitely worth a visit!
A luscious late lunch/early dinner was enjoyed by 5 old pals on a rainy Saturday. After a cocktail upstairs in beautiful and comfortable surroundings we moved downstairs. We enjoyed beef, steak, lamb and steak and kidney pudding. We couldn’t fault anything, it was so delicious...and clearly freshly cooked. The service is always good and the staff are unobtrusive. They engage if you engage. I’ve dined here before but this is the first time I’ve reviewed. I normally have a starter and main in most places but here I go for mains and dessert. This is because the chocolate mousse with Baileys whipped cream is first rate.More
