The food is interesting. If you are from the Uk, you will more than likely be uses to Indian restaurants that are in fact Bangladeshi, this is different. The staff are very helpful and well informed they are happy to discuss your taste and make recommendations. The standout dish was the crispy green starter, unlike anything I’ve eaten before but absolutely delicious. The main courses were good but my husbands lamb dish had several fatty pieces despite being assured the lamb was lean, however it was tasty. I was surprised my chicken curry was made with dark meat which I don’t usually eat, but for those that do it was flavoursome and tender. Be aware all the courses are very large, our party of 4 shared two starters and could have easily shares 2 or 3 mains. My only criticism is the wine. I did not recognise a single white. The only Sauvignon blanc they had was very bad, I think it was very old and also corked. The house white was a very cheap tasting Chardonnay type of wine, not very pleasant, we settled on beer as the safest option. We have so many good white wines in Portugal, I would suggest the restaurant consider adding the ever popular and very affordable QMF and/or Paxa the their list.

A refreshing experience to the more established, but predictable, Indian restaurants in the area. Very pleasantly surprised by the quality and flavour of the dishes, and by all means, rely on the friendly manager (?) for recommendations — the menu is varied and a tad confusing, but the crackling greens as a starter were superb. They serve Indian tapas at lunchtimes for €25, will definitely be back to indulge….

I've had a feast in my taste buds and was introduced to North, East, South, and West Indian food flavors by Chef Rao. We were guided by the Chef from the incredible starter courses throughout the main course and dessert. Chef Rao wanted to show us the culinary experience of India and took the time to come to our table regularly to check on our preferences and tell us amazing stories. I 100% recommend the United Kitchen of India in Almancil is a place full of atmosphere, friendly people, and food to die for. Can't wait to go back there again. Thank you so much Chef... you will be seeing us again very soon. Sofia & Phillip Clubley

I collected a take away consisting of 3 main courses with rice and nan bread which was ordered by my daughter. I paid €90 in cash as the card machine wasnt working. At this point didnt know what was ordered so didnt question the price. When I went home and found out what was ordered I phoned the restaurant to see if a mistake had been made as what I paid didnt correspond with the prices they had posted online. After 2 hours I had to phone again and was told that the bill was correct and that the online price was incorrect. The food tasted good but consisted mainly of sauce with very little meat. For me €90 for three main take away dishes is a Rip Off. Denis

As a Glaswegian with an Indian father, I thought I knew a bit about Indian food. However, the UKI and it’s chef-patron Narayan serve up a fantastic culinary experience second to none. We entrusted our order to him and were not disappointed. My children were soon devouring fried spinach with a tamarind and yoghurt sauce (think Indian nachos) and other dishes none of us had tasted before. Dining on a Wednesday, the Almancil restaurant wasn’t packed so it was a shame that the atmosphere was a little subdued. Apparently previous unrelated restaurants at the address had failed but I’m sure as word of mouth prevails, this restaurant will become as popular as those QDL stalwarts close by. Curry is the most popular food in the UK and maybe Brits get too used to the same thing and forget we didn’t invent it so if you want to try something authentic and different, give this a try. It’s reasonably priced, the service is very attentive and you won’t regret it!

What a wonderful meal at UKI! After some confusion over which of the two restaurants we had booked at (top tip: there is one near Almancil, which is the offshoot of the original restaurant in Villamoura) the owner Narayan Rao greeted us in the beautiful Vilamoira setting. We told him our tastes and dietary preferences (we were a group of eight, mixed vegetarian/meat eaters) and he produced a variety of dishes to our taste. Without a doubt this was the most flavourful and professionally prepared meal we enjoyed whilst staying nearby in Val do Lobo. Many dishes to enjoy - the starters in particular were stand-out, as was the bread - all fresh, cooked with a variety of different herbs and spices. A real treat for the tastebuds and reasonably priced. We enjoyed it so much we visited the sister restaurant in Almancil later in the week and found it equally charming and full of character and good taste. Amidst a host of pretenders to ‘fusion’ cuisine in the golden triangle area, this is the real deal.

This has been a favourite for Indian food since it opened and we visit regularly. Tonight however was extremely disappointing. I visited with two friends. When we went in there was a party of 16 coming in for a birthday. We were right next to them and asked to be moved as they were very loud. So far so good. But then next to us was laid up another table of 16 and at 9.30 pm another very loud party arrived with 6 young children. Our food was delicious: 3 pre dinner drinks, 1 bottle of wine, 2 starters, 2 meat dishes, 1 lentil dish, 1 rice and nans. 167 euros, with tip 60 euros a head. We actually would have liked a coffee, dessert or nightcap but had to leave as we couldn’t even hear our conversation. The waiter apologised but if you aspire to fine Indian dining at prices to match you must create an atmosphere to compliment that rather than accept large parties creating a rowdy fast food environment. Very disappointing.

This could be so much better. It’s a nice restaurant which I want to visit serving excellent Indian food. However they are making the mistake of cutting back too much. A southern Indian dish of Fish and re chillies should be superb. With excellent fish available I did not expect frozen fish and no flavour in the sauce. Simply not good enough. Fresh prawns are widely available in the Algarve - we did not expect tiny frozen prawns served on sticks - cold and still wet from being frozen. Simply not good enough for what is capable of being the best Indian restaurant around. Add to this a very average white wine at €40 a bottle and this was poor. €262 for 4 people with no desserts is not value when some of the food is so very average. Please don’t cut down by on the quality of your ingredients otherwise you may not survive

Superb India food, sone of the best we have had anywhere ( in England and elsewhere). A fantastic choice of dishes from all the different regions of India. Our host took the time to explain the different dishes and made recommendations based on our spice preferences etc. The food was very freshly cooked and the service was excellent. Highly recommended.

Perhaps we visited on the wrong day, but we were very disappointed by our experience. We’ve been to their other restaurant in the past and had a very good meal. But here we experienced poor waiter service (it took 15 minutes to offer us a drink or a menu and the restaurant wasn’t even full). Both the fried fish starter and the vegetable samosa were poorly seasoned and dull, and very overpriced for the quantity. The menu is extensive but there is no indication of the heat of each dish which makes choosing difficult, unless you know Indian cuisine inside out. Which is why everyone who has left reviews mention that the chef chooses the meal, which may be okay for many, but I like to choose my food and know exactly what I’m getting. However, when my dish arrived it was okay, but lukewarm. My husband’s dish was very tomato-ey, despite asking for something spicy! It’s also very annoying to hear the chefs shouting at each other in the kitchen… so clearly something wasn’t going quite to plan that night! We had to ask several times for dishes to be cleared, and when we said we didn’t want dessert, I was presented with the bill without asking for it, and without having had a chance to finish my drink. A very expensive meal for such disappointing quality and quantity of food. Not sure we’ll be back again; once bitten twice shy.

From reading the reviews I expected a far more helpful, friendly and professional restaurant. When we arrived we had to wait for someone to approach us and was told we could sit anywhere over there!!! Pointing to a number of tables in the window but no one came with us and did not receive a menu or offer of drinks. On checking out the menu it is correct that there are no dishes that we recognised so when speaking to the 'advisor' and told what were our normal enjoyable dishes from other Indian restaurants he said they did not do those but would suggest certain dishes which would be as good if not better. When they arrived it was disappointing, they did not taste as spicy as we had been expecting; the small table could not accommodate all the glasses, side dishes and the huge dinner plate. We were left no alternative but to have to place items onto the dinner plate or else put them elsewhere (on the floor maybe?) There are no wine lists only a place in the corner of the restaurant where one could go to and choose. We requested the house wine but were given no price!!!! It was as good as any other local restaurant's house wine but the price was almost double!!! Other tables around us were beginning to be occupied but when we finished our main course and the dishes were taken away, no one approached us for any more requests although tables around us were being offered dessert menus. All in all we found it twice the price of any other excellent Indian restaurant and extremely pretentious.

This is a new restaurant in Almancil and I am a take-or-leave kind of person when it comes to curry. But I have eaten twice in one week at this restaurant (unheard of for me ) The flavours of the curry are just fantastic you have to taste it to understand, they do unusual vegetarian dishes like crispy spinach with a yoghurt dressing delicious .the young waiter who works there is very informative about each dish & good at guiding you on which too try, You just have to try this place you will love the flavours .

I’m not sure why they have menus as we didn’t get to choose a single item we actually wanted from the menu! I had read all the good reviews so we thought would visit, we had the chef come over to the table and we started explaining what we normally had at home then he wanders off and we are sat there wondering when are they coming to take our order and then 4 starters turn up! The chef is like just try these! The starters were lovely something cauliflower, crackling greens, onion pekora and a chicken dish. When it came to the main we asked for the menus back and the waiter just says I will make 4 medium curry dishes and a mild one for the children they did ask what meat we preferred but didn’t ask about rice or anything else we ended up with pilau rice and 4 chicken dishes we don’t even know what they were! Then after we had finished mains the waiter says I will bring you a lovely surprise now, 6 little bowls of ice cream, charged at 20 euros?! Not really asked about anything it felt like right this is what’s happening and too much was assumed and we didn’t like that it was like there was no point in the menus at all! Food was good but we definitely would have preferred to order off the menu and didn’t want the ice cream.

It was our first visit to this restaurant, a party of 6 and we thought it was absolutely fantastic. Rather than choose off the menu, the chef asked us what we liked to eat, choices of meat, fish & vegetarian and our preferred spice levels. He then created several dishes for starter and main course for us to try, giving us an insight into the regions of India that they originated from. Everything was simply delicious. The staff were also very welcoming and friendly. We will definitely be coming back.

The “highlight meal” of our week in Val do Lobo which is quite a thing to say given the fabulous food at Izzy’s and the party atmosphere at The Thai Beach Club down the road. The proprietor chef was warm, deeply knowledgable and asked us what we liked and didn’t and made us a special menu that suited our tastes. The cauliflower starter was sublime and the 8 hour cooked lamb (inside a small metal pot sealed with dough and cooked in sand heated to 90 degrees for 8 hours) was a force… It is truly different to have different regions of India represented in one menu Well with a trip if you have time and great value.
