So, my wife and I came here for Christmas dinner. It's annoyingly at the Welcome Centre which is a mountain climb away from the centre of Hirafu, but by jove it's worth it.
For context, I'm not really 'into' food, I generally can't tell the difference between fine dining and a spoon of salt. My wife, however, is a real foodie who goes to the gym specifically to allow herself to eat all the good stuff in the world without getting fat.
She's enjoyed a LOT of high end stuff, including top omakase stuff in Tokyo and all that stuff.
And she hasn't stopped talking about the food here since we went a week ago. She considers is the best food she's *ever had*!
As for me, somebody who can barely tell the difference between chicken and beef, even I noticed how perfect the food here was. It was supremely balanced, I suppose a kind of fusion between Asian and western, it allowed her, a seafood woman, and me, not so much, to both get exactly what we wanted.
The drinks, the dessert, the miso soup, the egg nog, all faultless. To top it off, we had one gem of a fellow Brit, 'Charlie', serving us, and he was a top lad and put on a perfect 'waiter' persona which is pretty hard to keep on all night, I reckon. He had confidence in his recommendations, knowledge, charm, wit, and we had extended conversations with him towards the end of the night which was a great vibe for a cherry on top of a great meal. Now I know he won't be there beyond his working holiday, but looking around at the other staff there, it seems compared to other restaurants in the area Kumo seems to do a much better job picking their staff.
Seriously, I've never known my wife to react so aggressively positive towards a meal before lol. Highly recommended, naturally, more than any other place in Niseko. Honestly I dunno what the negative reviews are on about. Maybe it was different staff, time of day, etc. Who knows.

We have been to the Kumo about a dozen times so far this trip - mainly lunches on the hill. What a find!!!
Coffee (500yen) is the best on the hill - tastes like double shots - not the anemic stuff served elsewhere. And the chocolate pudding (1000yen) is to die for. Prices for mains (around 1700 yen) are very reasonable. The most popular lunch dishes in our group are the chicken nanban and the tofu dish (which even I think tastes good and normally I don't like tofu). The other dishes on the menu have also not disappointed. The staff (Otabek,Trixie and colleagues) are friendly, helpful and know their menu. There is a good relaxed vibe amongst the staff. If you are on the hill there is a back entrance next to King Pair Lift 1. Leave your skis and boards on the racks, brush of the snow. Thru the door, into the lift, down one floor, walk through the ski concierge, turn left, keep walking past the shop, past the cafe, past reception and into the restaurant.

Dear RayPeeVee,
We appreciate you coming back to Kumo so often, and taking the time to review us.
I am glad you enjoyed your time with us so much and found our ski-in ski-out location convenient.
You are correct about our coffee, we use a double espresso shot as standard, I am glad you could notice the difference.
I will pass your kind feedback on to Otabek, Trixie and all the team.
We are all looking forward to serving you again on your next trip to Niseko.
Kind regards,
Jordan Redwood

We are staying at the hotel and have visited the restaurant twice now. Both were excellent meals and we will almost certainly be back at least once more before the end of the holiday.
Our servers were Jocasta on the first night, and then Alex tonight. Both were lovely people and happy to answer questions about the menu and make recommendations. We had two completely different meals (ok, I confess we had chocolate dessert both nights...) and both were amazing.
Keep up the good work and enjoy the season both of you! And say thanks to the guys in the kitchen too... your food is awesome!

Dear Trisha,
Thank you very much for your kind review. I have happily passed on your commendations to Jocasta, Alex and the kitchen team. I am glad to hear that you enjoyed your meal and the service during your time dining with us (the chocolate pudding is definitely worth having a few nights in a row).
I look forward to having you dine with us again next time you stay with us at Skye Niseko.
Kind regards,

Not fine dining dinner as it advertises or prices suggest - wooden tables with cracks in them and the service was poor and rushed. The miso soup and entree arrived within 1 minute of ordering like fast food, probably why they forgot to provide a spoon and then disappeared so quickly I couldn't ask for one. No wonder its one of the few places with empty tables/ you don't need to book for dinner in Niseko!

This is a restaurant run by an Australian hotel, Skye hotel Niseko. The reception is good and the staff are friendly and helpful. This is the only merit of this restaurant. We have ordered the beef tongue and scallop as the first course, chicken and pork skewer as second course. The main course are beef wrap and beef fillet. I have also ordered a bottle of an Italian wine from Barolo. Their set menu price at 16000 ÂĄ or 80 Euro.
Surprisingly, the main course beef wrap comes first. I tell the staff and they said the food order is controlled by the kitchen.
The tongue beef is overcooked and is very hard. The Scallop is typical supermarket food and I believe the scallop shell was reused repeatedly. The beef wrap is good but the beef fillet is tasteless. The wine is poured into the decanter in somewhere and the bottle is not found again.
I believe the restaurant management is poor. The food is below standard though the staff are working hard and friendly.

Re-visited the restaurant after years of COVID interruption, we’re disappointed to experience the decline in food quality. It’s still acceptable but no longer enticing. Services were a bit slow & inattentive too.
Went again the following ski season, more disappointed as the dishes were at best average & definitely not comparable to before & not to mention many of peers nearby. Dishes were not cheap at all. Not much service indeed.

Ski into Skye Niseko and had lunch at Kumo.
With all these hotels with restaurants down slopes, plenty of choices and place to eat.
This is full service and nice view to the Ace Family lift.
Service is good. I had pork rice bowl - yummy.
Has a good selection of beer, wine and cocktails. Menu for lunch is very good.
Will need to come back again.

We ordered a premium set that includes a wagu but it's an absolute disgrace since the meat is the saltiest meat that you'll ever taste in your lives, it's even saltier than the sea. Too much salt is not good for my digestion as I feel nauseated.

I read the reviews before booking and chalked it up to maybe one off experiences, and especially coming back from the pandemic. I sympathized with the manager when he responded to negative reviews. However, I Ian here now adding to the negative reviews which I hate to do,, but this deserves to be mentioned.
First, they charge an astronomical ¥6,000 per person cancellation fee 1-3 days before the reservation. I assumed this would be because they have impeccable service, and were booked. The restaurant was practically empty for our 7:30pm dinner. The hostess first took us to the worst table- fully exposed in the open in the front. When we asked to be seated deeper in the restaurant or even by a window in the back she said they’re saving that for a large party. There was no such large party that arrived. Sadly, we were placed in a booth, which was fine, but not our first choice.
The menu is extensive and kind of like tapas style. We ordered so much food and it came out almost at the same time. At one point we had to stack plates to make room. The food was excellent. The waitress came by for the taking the food order and delivering the food. That’s the only time we saw her.
She never once came by to refill our glasses with water, or even ask if we’d like more drinks. We’d have happily ordered a second bottle of ¥7,000 sake, but were never given the chance to place the order. Eventually we got more water but that was by someone else we flagged down. We had wanted to order coffee and dessert. But our waitress never came by. By the time we saw her again, we were annoyed, bo longer excited about dessert, and just wanted to get out of there so just asked for the check.
Here’s the thing- we’ve been in Niseko for 10 days. We’ve dined at nearly every restaurant in town. How come this restaurant has such crappy service and the others do not? OK, there’s one other one in town that also has bad service, but it’s not widespread. It comes down to poor training by management. Skye Niseko is a great hotel and this restaurant has potential but the non-existent service means we’ll never return. We’ve been to Niseko 3 times… on our next visit this will not be a contender for any meal.

Dear BearDays,
Thank you for taking the time to review us.
We aim to source Hokkaido produce for as many of dishes for breakfast, lunch and dinner and it sounds like we had the pleasure of serving you for all three.
Breakfast can be busy before the ski lifts open at 8:30 but with over 180 seats, there is rarely a wait for a table.
I have passed your kind comments on to our kitchen team and look forward to welcoming you back on your next visit to Niseko.
Kind regards,

A trendy cafe serving fusion Japanese & Western food at a new luxury ski hotel. Ambience was cozy & yet casual. Food quality was reasonably well but not outrageously priced. We loved the grilled pork shoulder & snow crab congee of this dinner. Pork was very flavorful. Congee was a big surprise with robust flavors from crab roe & meat. If services can get a bit better, I will give another star for the very good value for money being offered.

Hirafu in June is almost a dead-town, with barely any restaurants open for business. So I was glad Kumo was open and ready to feed two hungry, tired and somewhat underdressed travelers.
The food was delicious and service topnotch. I especially loved the crab congee with crab butter, and the Hokkaido beef filet with sea urchin butter was incredible. The price was not as expensive as I thought it would be considering the atmosphere and quality - a similar restaurant back in KL would easily cost at least twice more. If I find myself in Niseko in the near or distant future, I'd love to come and dine at Kumo again.
