Small museum with a big impact
I was impressed by the sod buildings and other reconstructions. I wasn't aware beforehand that the museum has quite an extensive collection. Much more than I expected with artifacts from different aspects of life in the area. The adjoining cafe called Freya was excellent. Food was delicious, beautifully prepared and it felt like we were at a tea party.

Learn how folks lived in days past...a true collection of Icelandic history
One of our Nordic Visitor stops. The amount of items in this museum is astounding, on top of a real fishing boat sitting in the middle of one room. Multiple sections in this museum - you can customize which parts you want to see based on your time. We did a thorough tour of the Iceland village houses in order to get a real feeling as to how people lived. We ran out of time but will make this another stop when we return.

    Fascinating
This museum visit was not planned but we found we had a morning free so went. No regrets. We could only stay for 2 hours but it was so full and there was so much to see and do that we could have spent longer. The insight into life in Iceland through the last 200 years was both informative and interesting.

    More than you can imagine
We had no idea about the size and scope of this museum. We thought it would be a quick visit, but there was so much to see. The main building has 3 floor of artifacts and exhibits to view. Then you go outside to see several reconstructed buildings from the past showing what life was like years ago. There are houses, a church, a school and other buildings to explore. They are well maintained and fascinating to see. But there's more! In the back, there is yet another large building that holds transportation and technology exhibits. It's interesting to see the change and progress over time. There's even a fancy cafe. All in all, we were very pleasantly surprised. This is a fine museum.

Cute museum - the homes and artifacts give a great insight into Iceland's history
Cute museum and more here than we thought! We came at the end of the day and honestly ran out of time. We could have easily spent 2-3 hours here (only had 1 hour) as there is a ton of artefacts to see. Would recommend if you have time to stop here and see how Icelander's used to live and how the land was settled. Plentiful parking (free) and not too crowded.
