- Cherry_WonderdogNew England4,987 contributionsBeautiful, classy, respectfulFinally came here to pay my respects to those who lost their lives nearly a quarter century ago. Kudos to NYC and all the people responsible for creating this classy and respectful memorial commemorating the victims on the planes, in the building, and on the ground (so many who risked and lost their lives going INTO the buildings before they fell). The entire layout was one that afforded deep reflection of a time, innocence, and for many, a generation lost. The layout of the twin towers has been tastefully converted into active water basins with the names of those who perished randomly (by category) inscribed in bronze around the perimeter. Noise levels are kept at a minimum, although people still congregate for a casual outdoor meal or social gathering. Thankfully, there aren’t any tacky vendors selling knick knacks, only a few items related to 9/11 whose proceeds are earmarked for good causes. All in all, it’s hard to believe how this place used to be – both before and for several years after the terrorist attacks. Today, it’s a place worth visiting on its own.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 March 2024
- TravelingSoccerLoonSaint Paul, Minnesota7,941 contributionsPoignant and Moving Tribute to Those Who Lost Their Lives on 9/11The 9/11 Memorial is a poignant and moving tribute to the 2,983 souls that were lost on Sept 11, 2001 and during the WTC Bombing in 1993. The 2 large pools sit at the location of the north and south towers of the World Trade Center. The names of the victims are inscribed on the walls of the monuments. There is also a museum that costs $33 to enter but a visit to the memorial pools is free. This is a sacred site and while a visit here can be quite sad, I believe it is something that all first-time visitors to NYC should experience.Visited April 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 March 2024
- PatrickLienz, Austria46 contributionsPure goosebumps! Must see!The waterfalls are very beautiful to look at and you can see the gigantic One World Trade Center! Soon you have passed both "pools" and you go into the Memorial Museum. Immediately a somewhat dark but also beautiful atmosphere sets in. It gives you goosebumps. You long for peace, love and think to yourself who could do something like that. The museum is perfect, exactly how it should be! Definitely worth a visit!Visited March 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 9 April 2024
- LondonLad64London, United Kingdom215 contributions"Very moving: A Must-See in New York"A dignified memorial honors victims from the planes, buildings, and ground, including those who bravely entered the towers. The twin towers layout is respectfully transformed into water basins, with names of the deceased randomly inscribed in bronze. Noise is minimized, allowing for solemn contemplation. For me, visiting this museum was one of the standout moments of my New York holiday, offering a profound and unforgettable experience.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 April 2024
- DAROHATHCairns, Australia1,303 contributionsA fine tribute and a must visit in NYC❤️The reflection pools and grounds around the 9/11 site have been beautifully laid out and are a fine tribute to those who lost their lives that tragic day. It’s a must visit in NYC. Take your time, be respectful and reflect on the magnitude of what occurred here. As an airline pilot, I cannot image what the crew and passengers went through that fateful day. May you rest in peace❤️Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 May 2024
- robertkxSlupsk, Poland127 contributionsIt's worth visitingA very good museum located at the site of the September 11 attacks. There are many exhibits (fire jackets, fire trucks involved in rescue operations). There is a moving room where the last conversations of people kidnapped by terrorists are broadcast, who, aware of the imminence of death, were saying goodbye to their loved ones. The entrance ticket is quite expensive. These types of places should be available for free for moral reasons.Visited November 2023Travelled with familyWritten 6 May 2024
- prodiver11221 contributionsA 'MUST DO' IN NYCThe work done on this Museum is amazing. A terrible tragedy aptly commemorated by the displays and information. I learnt a lot more than I knew before I went in. It's a 'must do' if you're in NYC. Beware, you'll need at least all day to appreciate it!Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 May 2024
- Ellie KBirmingham, United Kingdom714 contributionsExtremely moving - a very fitting tribute to those who diedThe memorial fountain made me very emotional; it was moving and extremely poignant. It is an upsetting and very appropriate tribute to remember the tragedy and lives lost. It was nice to see that people had added flowers to some of the names. The Survivor Tree is also very emotional to see and brought many deeper meanings to mind as we stood appreciating it.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 May 2024
- Sakura HoshiNew York City, New York14 contributionsA Day out at 911 Memorial and MuseumThe museum is really well done, informative, and respectful to all the people affected by the sad day and its aftermath. It's amazing how they built the museum where the sad event happened and show the original building marks. Some parts of the museum might make you feel more emotional depending on how close you were to the event. Personally, I felt overwhelmed by all the information and the small, enclosed space of the inner historical part. I had to step out for a bit and wait for my friends to catch up. The staff at the museum are really nice, and many of them have personal connections to what happened on 9/11. Some are even happy to share their stories to keep the memory alive. It's a good idea to buy tickets before you go, so you don't have to wait in line for too long. Also, make sure to watch the movie they show. We watched one about a big rescue at sea where boat captains and crews saved people from Manhattan. It was amazing to see how brave they were.Visited May 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 27 May 2024
- KMKD00Columbia, South Carolina129 contributionsEmotional and Powerful Memoiral and MuseumThis was a wonderful but very emotional visit. We did a walking tour and we purchased our tickets directly through the museum, not a third party. I HIGHLY recommend doing this organized tour through the museum. We started outside and our guide gave us headsets. His microphone talked directly into our headsets. We had a 10am start time and the place was already busy, so I was thankful I could easily hear the guide. It also enabled me to take the headset off when it was a little too much to remember from that day. We walked around and he shared about the outdoor memorial, the survivor tree, and much more. We then skipped the big line and went into the actual museum through a tour entrance with our own security line. This was really nice and much faster than the line we passed! After everyone had time to get through security and take a bathroom break, the tour continued in the museum. We had a fantastic guide and I learned so much that I would not have learned without the guide! The tour took about 2 hours and then we had time to walk through exhibits at the museum as we wished. I cried a lot. I read a book once where it said " it takes courage to take a place where something awful happened and make it peaceful" That is how I felt. Something horrendous happened here and it was hard to relieve it, but I think it is tasteful and very well done to teach what happened and remember those that were lost. And just my personal opinion.... I do not recommend taking young children. I also don't recommend taking smiling touristy selfies. In my opinion, it is just poor taste to taking big smiling tourist selfies in place that is designed to honor and remember a solemn event- it just seemed disrespectful.Visited April 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 27 May 2024
