- Ed HockedyOxford, United Kingdom21 contributionsGreat place to spend an afternoonDidn't plan to come here, but so glad we did. We visited because we were intrigued by Skyrland on the way to our next hotel, and ended up spending a whole afternoon wandering around here. Lovely shops that aren't just full of tourist souvenirs. Lots of great places to eat.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 November 2023
- BrakiWorldTravelerBelgrade, Serbia20,004 contributionsCute new built areaSelfoss is a small town in southern Iceland with nothing to do, but serving as a lodging base for the island tour. To enrich social life and tourist potential, town government started a program of rebuilding the town center. It's located just after the bridge when you enter Selfoss, by the old dairy factory (now a restaurant). You can see the map of what's planned to do - half of the project is done, while the rest should be finished in two years. Houses and shops look cute, however theme park like. Anyway it was nice to walk around as you have nothing else to do after dinner.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 26 November 2023
- AK8397Ontario, Canada1,052 contributionsWhat's Old is New AgainThis town is part way through a major rebuilding of it's center. What has been completed is very charming, with shops, cafes, restaurants and a nice common patio area. When we were there, crowds had gathered to watch a Euro Cup game on a big screen set up on the patio. This created a nice setting. We grabbed a coffee and pastry from one of the shops and enjoyed them with the game. It's all new, clean and nice.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 29 June 2024
- Steve wTorquay, United Kingdom19 contributionsTHE place to be in SelfossInteresting restaurant and shopping destination. Other than Reyjavik the towns we visited in Iceland didn't really have a distinct town centre like in the UK. This is a very good attempt to create one. It is only partially complete but still has character. They have rebuilt character buildings from Icelands past.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 31 August 2024

Today Skálholt is a place of history, culture, spirituality, faith and music. Visitors are welcome all year round. The cathedral and museum is open from 9 am - 5 pm every day all year round. The restaurant is open from 10 am - 4 pm. The Cathedral is a beautiful building known for it's powerful altar piece made by Nína Tryggvadóttir and the spectacular glass stained windows bade by Gerður Helgadóttir. On a sunny day the windows cast a colorful light all around the chuch. The acoustics in the church are one of the best in the world and many concerts have been held there. Skálholt was a center for education, religion and administration for over than 700 years and a place of pilgrimage in medieval times. Due to it's rich history archaeological excavations have been made on the site.Read more
