So much more to see than Eva Perón's grave
This is such a beautiful cemetery - a great destination for historians and photographers. You can go on a walking tour, or just stroll and take in the beauty. It was great to see Eva Peron's grave, but not exactly a highlight. The pictures I've attached here are my highlights.

    So much history
We visited the cemetery as part of a private tour. Our guide shared the history of some of the families who have their final resting place here. Like others we saw the tomb of Eva Peron (and her family) and it's underwhelming compared to many monuments here. It's huge and if you have nothing else to do you could spend a few hours strolling and reading. It's actually sad to see the poor condition of many of these old family tombs.

    a cemetery with important graves
The cemetery is full of gravestones worth seeing, unfortunately a credit card is required when visiting. I love cash because it means freedom. There is a plan where some graves are marked, including that of Peron. It's still hard to find because it's inside. It is definitely worth visiting this cemetery.

Wonderful above ground cemetery in Buenos Aires
The Recoleta Cemetery is located in the Recoleta barrio of Buenos Aires. It was built for the rich and famous of Buenos Aires 100 years ago. The vaults are above ground and in many cases are not well maintained. This is a MUST-SEE in Buenos Aires. Prepare to spend about an hour here. The cemetery needs a lot of work.

Hire a guided tour - it's worth it!
We hired a guided tour and it was the best decision! The cemetery has a multitude of mausoleums and the stories behind some of them are very engaging and give a completely different meaning to the visit. We took a 2-hour tour that allowed us to appreciate not only the structure, but also the cultural value and the construction of local history. Don't be afraid to look inside some mausoleums, especially those with stained glass windows!

    Unique experience
Well, worth the admission fee. This place is huge and amazing and unique. Highly recommend finding the time to go explore all the different mausoleum and crypts. (Also, there is a surprisingly clean bathroom inside the cemetery.)

    Very impressive indeed
Being an Evita fan, this visit was high on my list. We hadn't booked in advance so had to join a queue for entry fairly early in the morning so perhaps worth booking in advance if not going to be there early. The staff were very friendly and helpful. As to be expected there are tour groups visiting, so good to try to avoid these by taking a different route around the cemetery. Inevitable queues around the Duarte family grave (Evita) but most (unfortunately, not all) people were respectful and took their photos and moved on swiftly). Despite not knowing the history of many of the graves, they are absolutely impressive and does make you want to delve into the history of such families.

    Stunning!
We read that it says it opens at 9, but actually opens at 8. We got there at 8 and waited around an hour for it to open. Not a big deal. We were so happy to be there before the tours. We had pre-purchased our tickets, so it was easy to get in. We were by ourselves for around 40 minutes while others came in and it was so lovely to have time here to yourself. We didn't do a tour, which was fine with me. I'm sure we missed out learning some interesting facts, but wandering around on our own and taking in everything without a lot of people around was worth it.

Fun to explore on our own
We visited the cemetery on our own, although perhaps it might have been better with a guide - we knew the basic history and context but no specifics about any of the areas or tombs. Even without guidance, though, we enjoyed wandering around for half an hour or so. It is huge, so we didn't see everything, but we found Eva Peron's tomb (marked Duarte, her family's name) and saw many examples of different tomb styles. Some were very fancy, some not. Some were well cared for, others seemed completely abandoned. It was definitely an interesting visit, much different than cemeteries we'd been to at home.

    History
We paid 8,270 pesos (value April/24) per person to enter, around 46 reais. It is pure history and art among riots and graves. Many come in wanting to find where Evita Perón is buried. It's worth visiting.
