If you are interested in Britains colonial history and empire building then this is the place to come with your hand on left breast saluting the monarchy for a job well done. Seriously though if are into history this place is great. - rachel_w01011 contributionsLots to see, especially the Ancient Egyptian exhibitions!It was our first visit to this vast museum and we did the 90-minute ‘Around the world’ highlights tour, but wish we didn’t. I thought because the musuem was so big, we might miss the best exhibits, and this tour would show the best the museum had to offer and provide an interesting overview of major historical events from all over. Unfortunately, the tour guide, as lovely as he was, didn’t have a microphone so we couldn’t hear very well, and we only saw about five artefacts. The information we heard wasn’t particularly interesting and we had to go back and see the exhibits we were actually interested in on our own. If you’ve visited the museum a lot, the highlights tour might be of more interest to you. If not, just explore on your own (especially if you’ve done a bit of research in advance)! This museum documents humans from the very beginning...2 million years of culture!, its permanent collection is the largest in the world. The queue is worrying at 10 a.m., we expect to stay there for a very, very long time and ultimately no! Inside it is very impressive and we find all eras, all continents. Meticulously curated and well-organized it was truly a joy to see all of the various collections ranging from Ancient Egypt to modern currency. The exhibits are set up in a sensible way that flows easily. I appreciated how open the museum is, because nothing makes me want to leave like a claustrophobic feeling room. The objects are artifacts are well cared for and displayed. The museum itself is neat as a pin. Plenty of gift shops throughout, good security, cafes. The Assyrian collection is astounding. You can even view the Rosetta Stone. There's a huge collection of marbles from the Parthenon, including a caryatid.
