Nestled inland and away from its flashier French Riviera neighbours, Narbonne embraces a slower pace of life. The sleepy Canal de la Robine slices through this former river port, where salt marshes and lagoons filled with fishing boats draw plenty of artists but few tourists.

With a comfortable climate that varies little throughout the year, Sanremo has been a favored tourist destination since the mid-1700s, attracting visitors from all over Europe, including heavy contingents of Russian and British aristocracy. For many, the long stretch of beach is the main attraction, but don’t miss the impressive casino or the hillside medieval section of town called La Pigna. Every year since 1951, the city has hosted Italy’s popular Sanremo Music Festival.

The monolithic Rock of Gibraltar entices tourists with its lush greenery and the friendly Barbary Macaques ubiquitous to the area. Eindhoven is one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands, but you’d never know it from the high-tech industry and cutting-edge design it’s currently known for. If you have kids obsessed by all things wheeled, they will love the trucks at the DAF Museum.

Republicii, the astronomical clock of the Biserica cu Lună, and the Băile Felix thermal spa.
